Lt. Dean Birdsong, who has been in active service in the South Pacific for the past year landed in SanFrancisco.
Perry Irvin had his arm broken last Thursday while playing on a saw horse.
Staff Sergeant Harley Janke died in the Italian war theatre on October 20, 1944.
Pvt. James O. Peters was admitted to O'Reilly General in Springfield, MO for battle wounds received in the Pacific Theatre.
S/Sgt. Carl Wahl received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He is in a hospital in England.
The wife of Gilbert Campbell received the Purple Heart and Citation Medals awarded posthumously. Lt. Campbell's death resulted from a plane crash off Savo Island, November 15, 1942.
PFC Elmore Ryan was seriously wounded November 10, 1944 while serving in the infantry under General Patton near Metz. He is now in a hospital in France.

Mr. and Mrs. Ben Jacobs and family from near Utica moved into the property vacated by Etta Irvin. Mr. Jacobs is employed in the meat department at the Klema store.
Pearle McGaughey, 20, died Saturday morning at Hays from pneumonia and strep throat.
Cpl. Raymond (Hammer) Mills, a ground crew armorer, took part in the aerial attack on southern France.

The annual Halloween party sponsored by the McCracken Community Club was held on Main Street Saturday. Prizes were awarded to Douglas and Richard Higgins, Dixie Walker, Douglas Whitis, Tena Vogle, Reggie Irvin, Shirley Stremel and Winifred Gaschler.

Pfc. Vic Higgins, stationed at Ft. Hood Texas with the 1st Armored Division, recently participated with the softball team which won the Fourth Army Championship award at Ft. Hood.

Perry J. Irvin broke his leg Tuesday coasting down Brick Hill.
Winter 1964 - 65
A daughter, Janet Gail, was born October 25, 1964 to Mr. and Mrs. Guy Conner.

A girl, Sandra Sue, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Taylor, October 31, 1964.
The Boy Scouts held an all night camping and cookout at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Bible. Those scouts attending were Kent Bible, Richard Showalter, Russell Peters, Robert Mason, Jerry Schutte, Kenny and Bobby Foster, Howard Higgins, Jimmy Rein, Doug Whitis, Jimmy Conrad, Mark Derr, Vic Parsons and Floyd Norlin.
The Girl Scouts held a re-dedication and investure ceremony with Debbie Derr, Alicia Rues, Maureen Janke, Roxie Rogers, Patty Littler, Lynne Hinman, Kim Elmore, Jennifer Gaschler, Donna Davis, Betty Moran, Cathie Ryan and Laura Hinman participating. Pat Derr and Joyce Rogers are leaders.

Winter 1974 - 75
MHS Mustangs clinched a tie in the Lincoln Branch League with a 44-12 win over Tipton. Jim Casey rushed for 68 yards on 22 carries and two touch downs.
Sandy Taylor celebrated her 10th birthday with friends Janet Conner, Rhonda Conrad, Kayla Higgins, Brenda Barnes, Joy Mills, Kevin Casey, Mike Stull, Chad Herdman and Carl Done.
Dena Keener and Don Irvin were married October 12, 1974.

Bruce and Sue Davis, Bryan and Eric have moved to Madison where Bruce is teaching at Flint Hills Technical school and Sue is employed by the County Nurses Office.
Frog Hollow Tavern opened Wednesday night under the management of Richard and Johnny Mac Showalter.
Rose and Richard Jones, Skyler and Sierra are moving into the former Bruce Davis home.
Brett and Holly Gilbert have purchased the home of Mabel Irvin.
Congratulations to Roy and Phyllis Conrad on their 25th wedding anniversary.

Deaths: Joe Casey, 81, died October 31, 2004, at his home in McCracken. He was born December 24, 1922 near McCracken to Patrick J. and Sarah McGaughey Casey. He began his career as a law enforecement officer under the tutelege of Jack Edwards. He served us faithfully for the rest of his life as both a city police officer and a reserve deputy sheriff. He married Elizabeth "Betty" Kisslinger on October 30, 1945. She died December 22, 1992. He is survived by two daughters, Kathy and her husband Jerry Dugan, Sudan, TX and Sarah Casey, Wichita; a brother Pat and his wife Frances of McCracken; two sisters, LaVone Helms, Ness City and Marjorie Elias, McCracken; Janet Marden, Wichita and Scott Wittman, Wiley, CO, who he treated as his children; two grandchildren and two-great-granddaugthers. Burial was in McCracken City Cemetery where he served as sexton for 35 years.
James McNair, Ocean Springs, Mississippi, died November 30, 2004. He was the brother of Roger McNair, Betty Fear and "Arky" McNair. Funeral was held in Van Cleave, MS.
James Howard Schutte, 79, died November 6, 2004. He was born May 29, 1925 northeast of MCracken to George and Lottie Belle Blake Schutte. Burial was in the LaCrosse City Cemetery.
Mrs. Lyle (Ozene Newcomer) Farwell died in the rest home in Norwalk, CA in October 2004. She was the sister of the late Alta and Ola Newcomer.
Francis Luft, step-father of Ruth Akers Yawger's granddaughter, Deb and Joyce, died in Wichita, November 26, 2004
Doris Opal Steerman, 88, died Devcember 20, 2004, at Dodge City. She was born April 7, 1916 at McCracken to Stanley Mervin and Minnie Gertrude Charles Stoskoff. She married Connie Rudzik, on June 28, 1933. On December 19, 1953, she married M. C. Steerman. He died October 4, 1975. She is survived by two sons, Don and Richard, two daughters, JoAnn Rehmert and Mary Lou Fagan, 15 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, seven great-great grandchildren. Burial was in Fairmount Cemetery, Jetmore.

Curt and Denise Carpenter, Olathe, former residents, have a new grandson, Calix Curtis Carpenter, born November 7, 2004 at Martin Army Community Hospital, Fort Bennings, GA. He is the son of Chad and Amber Carpenter. Great-grandfather is Arnie Carpenter, Great Bend.
Wayne Irvin, Burke, Virginia, is the proud grandfather of a girl named Rachel Faye. She was born December 14, 2004 to Todd and Kristi Irvin. Wayne is a 1950 graduate of MHS.

100th birthday
Nancy Farwell Wilson celebrated her 100th birthday on Saturday November 27, 2004. She lives at Hayward Hills Health Center, in Hayward, CA.

Jan Brown, Scottsbluff, Nebr., has given a booklet to the Jail/Museum entitled McKittrick, Early American Families from Ireland. It is a history of the American families of Thomas and Elizabeth (Monahan) McKittrick and Peter & Rose (Thornton) McKittrick. There are also pictures of Wierman, Cramer, Manyon, Johnson, McKittrick, McCormick, Mulroy and Spangler families. The booklet is available to be copied.
Leslie Underwood, Lancaster, CA, came to visit McCracken. She had been a bidder on the McCracken school buildings on E-Bay. She first came to Topeka where she attended a Renewal Energy Conference with an emphasis on Wind Farms. The largest wind farm in the nation is located near her home in Lancaster.
Martin & Mary Higgins spent 10 days on the west coast. They visited Navy Friends in Benica, went to San Francisco and toured the wineries and Monterey and enjoyed a three hour cruise.
Doneta Parsons, Ness City and Vic Parson, Spearville, made a generous donation to the Alumni Memorial Fund and to the Jail/Museum in memory of Calvin Parsons. Calvin moved to McCracken in December 1953 to work as the head servcice man for Western Power and Light. He was accompanied to McCracken by his wife, Doneta, and two children, Sharon and Vic. He spent 29 years in the community. He built the first Dairy Bar and later purchased the drug store.
The Hayes and Miller families were in town for supper at The Mustang. Former teacher, Mark Miller, and his wife Sharon, Alma; Thomas Hayes and his friend of Lawrence; Kyra, Butch and Mac Hayes, Hays; Sean Miller, Topeka; R. B. Hayes, McCracken and Joel Miller and daughter Sierra, Colorado Springs, enjoyed the evening.
David Satterfield, grandson of Rev. Satterfield, former minister of the Assembly of God Church, was a McCracken visitior. He visited with Norma Sloan Leiker who lives in the former Assembly of God parsonage.

Angie Petz Huggard graduated from Models and Images on October 24. The Fall Show was at the Orpheum Theare in Wichita. Angie received the "Woman's Congeniality Award".

All McCracken Rodeo Committees are urged to attend the KPRA meeting at Garden City on January 15, 2005.
The plat book for the Nickel Cemetery has been given to the Jail/Museum The Contract for using the cemetery for the movie Paper Moon was included. It is dated September 16, 1972 and is signed by Frank W. Marshall, Associate Producer. The township received $100 for use of the cemetery on September 25 and 26, 1972. A detailed plat of the cemetery was prepared and submitted to the county by Erman Oelkers on April 25, 1989. It was filed for record on the 25th day of April, 1989 with Mary Ann Pechanec, Register of Deeds and notarized by Christie Bittel.
Floyd Norlin and his band G Z R played for the benefit for Travis Peters who is being treated for cancer. The band included Frank Foster, two members of his Colorado band, and Bob and Kenny Foster. Frank is now teaching lst grade at Midland Elementary School in Colorado Springs. He taught 15 years at Widefield Elementary.

Megan Conrad, Spring Blackwell and Danny Higgins participated in the musical "The Secret Garden" at Hays High School. Megan was a member of the Dreamers/Chorus; Spring was in the orchestra and Danny was a member of the cast. Megan is the daughter of Randy and Robin Conrad, Spring is the daughter of Gloria and Eddie Blackwell and Danny is the son of Cecilia Higgins and grandson of Babe Ruth Augustine Higgins.
LeeRoy Schuckman is back home and has been doing rehab 3 times a week. We call him the "Miracle Man".

Jodi Higgins, wife of Jerry Higgins, was honored for her 20 years with Central Bank & Trust in Hutchinson. She is Cashier.
Long-time resident, Frances Janke, has moved to Hays to the Hays Plaza Apartments.
Matthew Stull placed second in the North Kansas School District Middle School Cross-Country Championships. Craig is coaching Katelynn's basketball team.
There was an article about Ruby Myers in the Hays Daily News regarding her taking in a family.
Shannon Keith, age 7, climbed a rock wall at Galyans in Colorado Springs. She scaled the rock wall for 42 feet to the top.
A surprise '60th' birthday party was held in honor of Arlyn North, at the McCracken Community building given by his family.
Twila Higgins, Laura Linsey and Jackie Casey arranged the fall flowers which were placed on the altar at St. Mary's Church for the Thanksgiving Mass.
Mylo Oyler, Saint George, Utah, father of Jodi Higgins, has donated a miniature lighted brass oil rig, pumping unit and tank battery to the Museum.
Shane Anderson returned to his base at Nellis AFB in Las Vegas, NV after spending 10 days with his family. Shane got a 9 point buck while here.
John Zeller had back surgery at the Spine Hospital in Wichita. While recuperating he is contributing to the McCracken News column in the Rush County News.
Roy and Phyllis Conrad, Gladys and Wendell Hinman, Twila Higgins, Jean Schutte, Joanne Micheli and Bet McCormick decorated the City Park for Christmas.
The McCracken United Methodist Church sponsored a hayrack ride on December 11, 2004 preceding the fund-raising soup supper at the Community Building. Santa arrived at the Park at 7:00 p.m.
Lorraine Norlin attended the lst birthday for her great-granddaughter, Kizzie' at Overland Park.
The Keenagers (Seniors) of the First United Methodist Church in Hays toured the Jail/Museum and St. Mary's Church then enjoyed a meal at The Mustang on December 3, 2004.
Midge Davenport celebrated her 90th birthday on December 12 in Hutchinson.
John Waelchli served as Santa Claus at the Humane Society in Hays .

Diz & Wilma Washaliski, Jean Oelkers, Sharon Irvin, Ruth Crawshaw and Carol Weber sang in the Christmas Cantata sponsored by Pro Art Music Club.
Jack & Verlene Wilson spent a weekend at Morse, TX, visiting with our rodeo provider, Allan and Janice McCloy. They also toured the Palo Duro Canyon.
Clayton Wilson was quoted and Ty Elias pictured in the Hays Daily News, December 7, 2004, as they and their employer Sporer Land Development worked to grade and level the area for the new Home Depot. Ty was pictured using a global positioning device at the contruction site.
On December 10, 2004, Brooke Deines was featured in the Hays Daily News regarding her day-care business. Brooke is the wife of Curtis Deines and daughter of Eddie and Gloria Blackwell and granddaughter of Philena Baus.
Former techer Bob and Sharon Bearley now live in Kensington. Bob teaches and coaches, Sharon is a para and dietary manager at a nursing home. They also do respite care for foster children. Bob and family live in Minden, Iowa, Crystal works for Workforce Solutions and Justin and Lori Graff will be married in April at Cheney.
Carson North, son of Heath and Paula North, had surgery in Kansas City December 1, 2004.
Zach Higgins is a member of Prairie Hills Middle School basketball team.
A Christmas Eve Mass was held at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Father Basil Torrez of Collyer officiated. The church was decorated by Pat & Fritz Casey, Roy and Phyllis Conrad and Twila Higgins.
Engine Powered Products was featured in the Hays Daily News in an article about school buildings purchased on E-Bay.
The playing floor in the McCracken High School gym has been sold and taken to Bay City, Michigan. Billy W. Chrzan did the work. A piece of the floor was donated to the museum.
Philena Baus had back surgery at Wichita recently. She is recuperating with her family in Hays.
Those taking down the Christmas decorations at the Park were Twila Higgins, Laura Linsey, Wendell and Gladys Hinman, Mary Beth Peach, Tomi Rues, Roy & Phyllis Conrad. The children, Zach, Brendon, Kate, Emma and Will enjoyed the day playing in the Park during the unusually warm day.
Spring Blackwell is a member of Senior Scout Troop No. 63 of Hays. She and other members of her troop have been working on the Contributing to Society section of the Senior Girl Scout Challenge. Their project was to scrape and repaint the sign at Sunrise Park. She was featured in the December 27, 2004, Hays Daily News.
Our Web Master, Todd Frazier, lives in Bonney Lake, WA. He and his wife Leslie have three girls, Heather 14, Holly 11, and Hannah 7. Todd plays with several orchestras and groups -- the Gateway Concert Band, The Rainier Symphony, The Federal Way Symphony, the Black Diamond Brass quintet and contracts to many of the churches and groups for various activites. This past summer he was hired to record horn parts for the studio stoundtrack of an upcoming rock opera called Joe Bean. We are fortunate to have him as our "web master". Thanks, Todd.
