Summer/Fall 1944

Georgia Sloan and Leonard Mills were married July 26, 1944 in McCracken.

Mr. and Mrs. Gloyd Vogle are parents of a daughter born August 16, 1944.

First Lt. Francis Lovitt was killed in action in France, August 18, 1944

Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Herdman are parents of a daughter, Glenda Carol, born August 24, 194.

A son, David Avery, was born October 13, 1944 to Mr. and Mrs. Avery Norlin.

Donna Hinman and John W. Miner were married October 7, 1944 in Kansas City.  She is presently teaching in Great Bend.

 

Summer/Fall 1954

Alberta Moses and John Gay were married in the Assembly of God Church in Topeka, July 31, 1954.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Doyle Foster, a son, Francis William, August 4, 1954 in LaCrosse.

Juanita Walker, who has been working at the University of Kansas, is now employed at the Smoky Hill Air Force Base in Salina.

Beginners in McCracken Grade School this year are: David Andrews, JoFaye Gaschler, LuAnn Grumbein, Brenda Kleysteuber, D.J. Klema, Karen Norlin, Daryl North, Mary Ann Pfaff, Joan Pfannenstiel, Gene Petz, Susan Reinhardt, Ronald Rein, Daryl Serpan and Madeline Rein.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Al Rues, a daughter, Alicia Anne, born September 7, 1954.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Francis Zeller, a son, John, born September 6, 1954.

Summer/Fall 1964

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Donald Davis, a daughter, Annette Marie, July 29, 1964.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Larry Eisenhour, a son, Mitchell Larry, August 3, 1964.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Dight House, a daughter, Jennifer Ann, August 4, 1964.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. James Bromlow, a daughter, Kerri Lynne, August 6, 1964.

Four McCracken boys, Bill Zeller, Ernie Gaschler, Wendell Conrad and Danny Rein escaped serious injuries when they were thrown from the mail truck one mile north of town.

Tena Vogle and Richard Barber were married August 8, 1964 at St. Mary’s Church in McCracken.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Donald Petz, a son, Christopher Duane, August 26, 1964.

Mr. and Mrs. Guy Conner are teaching in the Dighton school system this year.

Perry J. Irvin was accidentally shot and killed in Vallejo, California.  He was with the US Navy.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Furlen Irvin, a daughter, Lesa Gay, September 22, 1964.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Casey, a son, Kevin, October 21, 1964.

Marion Kay Barnes is one of the candidates for the Kansas Wheat Queen.

Summer/Fall 1974

The McCracken Mustangs open the football season with a new league affiliation.  They are now a member of the Lincoln Branch league with Lucas, Gorham, Dorrance, Bogue, Eastern Heights, Luray and Tipton. 

Terry Herdman has been selected as an Outstanding Young Man of America.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Seltman, a son, Mathew Allen, September 12, 1974.

Those attending kindergarten: Debra Gaunt, Trenton Herdman, Kaira Miller, Penny Schuckman, Tracy Zinn, Melissa Seltmann, Lance McCormick, Frances Million and Tricia Seltman.

MHS Mustangs football team walked over Gorham by a score of 52-8.  They are ranked 10th in the State.

Frank Foster, a Fort Hays State music major, won 1st place in the Pick-a-Thon contest at Hays Music.  He lasted 87hours and won a Gibson guitar.

Kent Bible has been awarded a scholarship at Kansas State University where he is majoring in math education.

Renee Schwindt and Steve Scott were married in Alexander, October 5, 1974.

The Mustangs have kept their record perfect with a win over Eastern Heights.  They are 7-0.

 

Summer/Fall 1984

Jerry Higgins received his M.S. in HPER from Ft. Hays State at the end of the summer season.

Congratulations to Rob and Helena McGaughey on the birth of a daughter, Ashley, born September 5, 1984.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Rodney Taylor, twins, Anthony Joseph and Ashley Nicole, September 17, 1984.

McCracken Colts volleyball team members are:  Crystal Anderson, Kristi Brackney, Lynette Harp, Melissa Morgan, Shelly Sewell, Treva Wilson, Tracy Smith, Tammy Sewell and Lori Smith. Coach is Robin Schuckman.

Terry Musil is coach for the Colts football team.  Members are Bryan Bergquist, Kim Cao, Scott Mays, Bruce Barnes, Adam Showalter, Billy Harp, Brett Gilbert, Kelly Petz, Heath North and Qui Quach.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Ray Wierman, a daughter, Cindy Lynn, September 18, 1984.

Alicia Rues and Leigh Barrett were married September 8, 1984 in Topeka.

Sixty-five students are enrolled in McCracken Grade School.

Fifty children attended the 2nd annual Halloween parade Sunday at the McCracken Park.  Master of Ceremonies was Francis Zeller. Judges were Sylvia Mason, Claude and Lillian Irvin and Bob Foster.  Winners were Dawn Baus, Michael Zimmerman, Debbie Justice, Bobby Mills, Megan Carpenter, Kim Halbleib, Daniel Zeller, Leigh Baus, Shane Anderson, Crystal Conner, Lindsey Groff, Jenny Rogers, JoLynn Bethke, Nicole Moran, Tyrel and Travis Elias, Dana Bergquist, Todd Sewell and Brett Gilbert.

 

Summer/Fall 1994

Jack Wilson was elected as a director for the KPRA to represent all the rodeos in Kansas.

Frank Foster is a member of the country western band “Mill Hill” in Colorado Springs.

McCracken’s Rodeo was named KPRA Rodeo of the Year, an annual award voted on by KPRA members who are mostly contestants.  McCracken was selected from 24 rodeos in the State.

Mark and Ann Baus began a company called Golden Accents. Their products include wheat, oats, barley, triticale and beardless wheat.

Michelle Marie Bame and Michael David Hays were married August 13, 1994 in Overbrook, Kansas.

Congratulations to Terry Showalter and Helen Oborny who were married October 8, 1994.

Congratulations to Joe and Katherine North on the birth of a son September 28, 1994.

Five hundred area grade school students boarded the Union Pacific Operation Lifesaver Special train in McCracken on Thursday.  During the 40 minute train ride to Hoisington, the students were given a lesson in railroad safety.

Congratulations to Allan and Norma Elmore Kober on the birth of a daughter, Kristin Louise.

Births:  Morgan Seraea Deines, daughter of Brooke and Curtis Deines was born September 6, 2004.  She has a sister, Taylor, age two.  Proud grandparents are Eddie and Gloria Blackwell and great-grandmother, Philena Baus.
 
Marriage:  Lisa Groff, daughter of Cheryl Groff and granddaughter of Bob House, was married to Dustin Day at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hays, September 25, 2004.
 
Michael Dykes, great-nephew of Thayne and Machree Jones was married in Denver.  He is the son of Donald and Arlene Dykes.
 
Dave Gilkison & Amy Walker were married August 14, 2004, at the United Methodist Church in Ness City.  Amy is the daugher of John & Sherry Walker.
 
Deaths:  Norma June Sultzer Hay died July 10, 2004, at Springfield, Virginia.  She was the daughter of Clyde and Lila (Barber) Sultzer and granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Sultzer, McCracken and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Barber,  Brownell.  Her cousins are Ruth McLaughlin, Hutchinson and Orville Durand, McCracken.
 
Mary M. Pfeifer died August 4, 2004 at LaCrosse.  Her daughter is Mrs. Charles (Monica) Halbleib of Ness City.
 
Sharon Mendenhall, wife of Sheriff Jack Mendenhall, died suddenly.  Her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Janie and Walter Rogers live here.
 
Marjorie Ann (Friess) Flax, died September 3, 2004, at Ransom.  Her daughter, Bernadette, son-in-law, Rodney Taylor and grandchildren, Adam, Anthony, Ashley and Whitney live in McCracken. 
 
Floyd Thompson, 71, died on September 29, 2004, at home in McCracken.  He was born at Baker Hospital in LaCrosse on January 23, 1933 to Audice and Ruby Yawger Thompson.  He is survived by his wife Carolyn, daughter Susan Keith, son-in-law Mike Keith, granddaughter, Shannon Keith and brother Ben Thompson.  He was a 1951 graduate of McCracken High School and a 1959 graduate of Fort Hays.  He was a lifetime resident of Ness & Rush counties where he was a farmer and rancher.
 
Teresa Moran, 77, died October 14, 2004 at Atchison.  She was born January 8, 1927 in Hays to John Patrick and Marie Haughney Moran.  She was a former student at McCracken.  She graduated from the former Mount St. Scholastica Academy and College.   After her father's death she returned home to be with her mother and operated J. P. Moran Investments.  She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.  She is survived by niece Julie and nephew John.  Burial was in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery southwest of McCracken.
 
Fern Zimmerman, Hays, died October 23, 2004 at her home.  She was born in McCracken to John and Ethel (Carmen) Oelkers.  She married Connie Zimmerman in LaCrosse, he survives.  She is also survived by two son, Terry and Jayme, one daughter, Valerie Schaeffer, six grandchildren and one brother Lawrence Oelkers of Hays.  Fern was a 1940 graduate of McCracken High School.
 
Marty Reed, 58, died October 17, 2004 at Ellsworth.  He was born May 5, 1946 at Alton, Illinois to Robert and Leah James Reed.  He was a retired Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper.  He served with the U.S.  Marines during the Vietnam War.  He married Janet Ferland on July 4, 1970 at Zurich, she survives.  Other survivors include two sons, Darin and Daniel and two daughters, Lisa Weber and Lori Sprague.  Burial was in Ellsworth Memorial Cemetery with military honors.  Marty and Janet lived in McCracken where she taught Business at McCracken High School and Marty attended Fort Hays.
 
Members of Westside Winner 4-H Club are Katelyn & Angela Morgan, Sierra Jones, Leah and Olivia Baus, Hailey Wells, Amanda & Derrick Schlegel, Katie, Emma, Jacob & Michael Showalter, Alyse Mantz.
 
Winners at the McCracken Men's Open Golf tournament were Championship flight, Mitch Conner, lst; Jason Showalter, 2nd; Tony Harp 3rd.  Longest drive, Michael Morgan; longest putt, Bryan Yohe; closest to the pin, Jason Showalter.
 
James K. Wierman celebrated his 80th birthday on August 11, 2004.
 
The McKenzie family reunion was held in Kansas City.  Icis Eisenhour and her family attended in August.
 
Layne and Kerri Morgan attended the Scheuerman reunion at Camp Aldrich in August.
 
The Mustang team of Lance Irvin, Amanda Showalter, Caite Kendrick, Anna Chelly, Tyrel Elias, Emily Rogers and Dane Basgall placed 3rd in mud volleyball at the Rush County Fair.
 
The "Old Timers" softball team placed 2nd at the Rush County Fair.  Members were Steve Morgan, Neal Jacobs, Heath Morgan, Chad Irvin, Dave Wilson, Larry Schmidt, Paul Oborny, Jeremy Ortez, Kyle Wherry, Donnie Dreher, Ronnie Randa and Pat Depperschmidt.  They were deafeated by a team from Wichita.
 
Dorothy Grahm has produced a cookbook called Fuss Free Receipes.  She has a website www.fussfreefavorites.com. 
 
David Moran, Pharmacy specialist at Wesley Hospital in Wichita, was named a Wesley Ambassador at a party in his honor.  David joined Wesley as a Pharmacist in 1995 and became a Pharmacy Coordinator in 1998 and a Specialist in 2000.  He works primarily in Surgical Intensive Care and is a member of the Trauma/Sepsis Team.  He and his wife, Stacy, have three children, Nick Zack and Abby.
 
Visitors to the museum were Robert and Delores Landon Paris, Dighton; Cliff and Pat Gruver, Topeka;Bob and Faith Landon, Richard and Nadine Landon, Deerfield.  Their father was Jay Landon and his father, R. E. Landon was an early settler in the Hampton area coming from Russelll county in 1901.  They purchased the Plotner-Lovitt farms northeast of town.
 
Race fans who attended the car races in Knoxville, Iowa, were Johnny Mac and Richard Showalter, Scott Mays, Jason Showalter, Lee Allen and Nathan Showalter.
 
Glenn Ryan and Nicole vacationed in Branson, Missouri.
 
Ted Nuttle was featured on KAYS TV showing his work at Homer B. Reed in Hays.
 
Danielle Dinges, Ness City, was crowned the 2005 Miss Rodeo Kansas Princess at the conclusion of the Miss Rodeo Kansas Pagent held in conjunction with the Dodge City Roundup Rodeo.  Danielle was one of the candidates for Miss Rodeo McCracken in July.
 
High School students attending Western Plains High School in Ransom are Jordan Janke, Casey Brown, William Greenway, Kelsee Rogers, Matt Casey, Jessie Casey and Rashell Mills. 
 
Collingwood-ADM was leased to Midland Marketing, Inc. on September 1, 2004.
 
Les and Rose Diehl have moved to another home in Topeka.  Rose had a double move, as the radio station she works for also made a change in location.
 
Norma Sloan Leiker has returned home to live and work.  She has opened a beauty salon in the Assembly of God Parsonage where she lives.
 
Higher oil prices has increased exploration near McCracken.  Five thumper trucks were doing seismographing in the area.
 
Shirley Higgins had surgery at Via-Christi-St. Francis in Wichita.
 
Jack Wilson received good news that his cancer is in remission.
 
Michelle Mays came by train to Garden City to visit Janice (Depperschmidt) and Kevin Mohler.  She then spent two weeks with her grandparents,George & Joyce Hunter and her brother Scott and Kendra Mays .
 
John Zeller had carpal tunnel surgery at Hays Medical Center.
 
Marty and Tina Mills celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary at The Mustang on September 2, 2004.
 
Will Rogers (Doug Watson), was in McCracken for a History Alive program sponsored by McCracken Public Library on September 18, 2004 at the McCracken Community Building.  Doug Watson is a professor of English at Baptist University in Shawnee, OK.
 
A farewell party was held on Sunday, August 29, for Ron Cooper who moved to Oberlin to be of help to his son who has MS.  Ron also had a tragedy when his brother died as the result of a fall.
 
The Elias family had a reunion with relatives of the late Helen Elias in Oklahoma City.  Jim and Carol Elias, Indianapolis, Indiana attended.
 
R. B. Hayes, former Principal of MHS has moved to McCracken.  He bought the former home of Bev and Vida Irvin.
 
Those serving on the primiary election board for Hampton-Fairview Township were Ruth Crawshaw, Jean Oelkers, Twila Higgins, Phyllis Higgins, Betty Greenway and Pat Derr.  110 voted.
 
Lee Roy Schuckman is recovering and taking therapy after his bout with a flesh-eating virus.  He was a patient at Via-Christi in Wichita.
 
Francis & Bill Zeller represented West Burch Post #59 of McCracken at the Dedication Ceremony for the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery at WaKeeney on September 10, 2004.  Former McCracken resident,  Bob Funk, was one of the earliest proponents for bringing the cemetery to WaKeeney.
 
Craig Higgins, Laramie, Wyo., grandson of Wilfird and Twila Higgins, is teaching in Charlotte, North Carolina.
 
Joy Hunter and Helena McGaughey attended the Clay Aiken concert at the Kansas State Fair.
 
Doug and Staci Elias wrote from Florida that Hurricane Frances came right over the top of them near Tampa.  They had some flooding, but did not lose power.
 
Jan North attended the "Get Motivated Seminar" in St. Louis.  A featured speaker was Rudy Giuliani, former mayor of New York City.
 
The Jail/Museum has purchased the genealogy of the Daniel Neal descendants by Virginia Neal Evans Daley Griffin of Springfield, Tenn.  Dean Birdsong is a member of this clan.
 
Lucille Crotinger is home after three weeks in the hospital.
 
The His-Hers golf tournament was played in heat and wind.  Champsionsip lst place - Wilfrid and Twila Higgins; 2nd place, Diz & Wilma Washaliski.  Longest drive for ladies, Kim Jay; for men, Lynn Enslinger; longest putt for women, Wilma Washaliski; for men, Dean Jay.
 
Dennis Peters enjoyed his summer.  His daughter, Sherrina and husband Mario and sons, Lorenzo and Christian visited him for the entire month of August.  they also went to the wedding of Marla Peters, youngest daughter of Mike Peters at Harrah's.  They also attended a Peter's family get together in Great Bend.
 
Team members of Greenpeach, the McCracken womens volleyball team, are Mary Beth Peach, Paula Greenway, Valerie Rogers, Tomi Rues, Lynette Engel and Melissa Mantz.
 
Rena Ryan, Salina, Mary Ann Higgins, Lenexa and Anita Boatright, Topeka, vacationed in Brownell.
 
Tim Rues and Howard Duncan have been performing the play "Uneasy Alliance".   It is a history re-enactment.
 
Leah Baus and Sheila Brown are members of the Junior High Bobcat Volleyball Team at Western Plains South; Matthew Casey, William Greenway and Casey Brown are members of the Western Plains Football team; and Jessica Casey and Kelsee Rogers are members of the Varsity volleyball team.
 
Msgr. Patrick J. Leahy celebrated his 90th birthday on October 6, 2004.
 
Kyra Horesky, Hoisington High School sophomore, was listed in the Hutchinson News Arean Volleyball Leaders.  Cameron Horesky, freshman at Hoisington is 8th in receiving for the varsity Cardinals.
 
Book club members are Ruth Crawshaw, Tomi Rues, Francis & Julia Zeller, Norma Leiker, Thayne Jones, Janice Stull, Shirley Higgins, Jackie Casey, Lorraine Ryan, Carolyn Thompson, Carol Weber.
 
Jim Swartz, Rosholt, SD, spent some time visiting at Charlie's Station.  He had been in Hutchinson to visit his sister, Rose Grumbein.
 
Lee Legleiter, son of Mike and Sharolyn Legleiter, is attending Kansas State University.
 
Signe Barnes spent two weeks in Calgary this summer visiting Stuart and Brenda Clancy, Hailey and the new baby Harley.
 
John Stull had successful surgery at Hays Medical Center on October 1.
 
Victoria & Christina Unrein were members of the FHSU theatre production "Gypsy".  They are the daughters of James and Diane Unrein.  Mel and Jennifer Sauer were in the orchestra.
 
Jerry Higgins refereed volleyball games at Andale.  Sue Coffman, former teacher and volleyball coach at MHS, and her team were one of the participants.  Her oldest son, Luke, is married.  Sue and Bill are expecting their first grandchild.  Matt and Andrew are both students at Emporia State University, Andrew plays football.  Bill still teaches and coaches football in Andover.
 
Ashley McGaughey underwent gall bladder surgery.
 
Ed Suher, Jr., Riverside, California was a visitor to McCracken.  His parents were Ed and Pauline Suher, former residents until the late 1930's.
 
Robert Cheney, class of 1951, Madison, Wisconsin, writes that he is now retired, but his wife Audry is working part time taking care of two disabled people.
 
New sweatshirts are now available for order.  They feature a mustang logo with the following printed on the sweatshirt:  "McCracken, Once a Mustang, Always a Mustang" with a blue mustang in the center.  An order blank can be found on this site, or just contact us.
 
Curly Juvenal, Daleville, Alabama, was stopped at a yeild sign on his motorcycle when he was hit from behind.  He was in Intensive Care for 3 or 4 days.  They decided the accident was a blessing in disguise because the MRI said he had blood on his brain and could have had a stroke or an aneurysm.
 
Bill and Sharon Lovitt have donated a letter opener from Merle O'Loughlin to the Jail/Museum.
 
Dale, Julie and Gage Elias have moved to Bazine.
 
Those participating int he story hour at McCracken Libary are Katelyn Engel, Emma and Kate Rues, Annie Wyre, Lexi and Zoe Anderson, Brendon and Zachary Peach.  Helpers, Paulette Harp, Valerie Rogers, Lynette Engle.
 
Chris Irvin, Brian Baalman, Aaron Basgall and Ty Elias attended races in Kansas City.
 
Skyler Jones is a member of Boy Scout Troop 7147.  They spent the weekend at Cheyenne Scout Land Camp near Great Bend.  Skyler was moved from Tenderfoot to 2nd class.
 
Richard Showalter and his limo transported several to Dallas to watch the Dallas Cowboys football game.
 
Catherine Casey, Topeka, broke her left wrist from a bicycle fall.
 
A tribute to veterans will be held November 7, at the McCracken City Building.  The McCracken United Methodist Hand Bell Choir will perform.
 
Helena McGaughey and Rose Jones won door prizes at the Taco Night fund-raising event for the McCracken City swimming pool.  The next fund-raiser will be a soup supper on Saturday, December 4.  Donations will be accepted to help up-date the pool.  Any help you can give will be appreciated.  Part of the funds from the sale of the Mustang sweatshirts will go to the pool and part to the Jail/Museum.
 
Mike Sharkey of Otis has been in town putting in handicap access ramps at the community building and on Main Street.
 
Congratulations to Jerilyn Stull, her staff and the members of the Leopards Volleyball team on their trip to State at Hays. 
 
Spring Blackwell, sophomore daughter of Eddie & Gloria Blackwell is on the tennis team and plays in the band at Hays High school.  Chris Pham is a Junior at Hays High and plays in the band.  He is the son of Hung & Jung Pham.
 
Jan and Josh North were featured in an article in the Hays Daily News regarding an exercise program at Hays Medical Center's Center for Life Improvement.  Jan participated in the "walk a mile in my shoes'.  Josh, who was paralyzed in a wreck, works out at the Center to build up his strength.  Jan learned how much effort Josh must expend by doing things that we take for granted.
 
Stacie Sandall who has contributed pictures for this web site has now become a feature writer at Hays Daily News.
 
Ben Thompson gave his newest pet - a baby snapping turtle, to Sternberg Museum for their Discovery Room.
 
Joe Engel was inducted into the Kansas Association of Broacaster's Hall of Fame and received the Kanas Association of Broadcaster's 2004 Distringuished Service Award at their convention in Overland Park.  Joe is a big supporter of the McCracken Rodeo.
 
Landon James Barnes, son of Bruce & Carol Barnes, Greensburg, was baptised on October 17, 21004 at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Kinsley.  On the same day, Harley Brooke Clancy, daughter of Stuart and Brenda Barnes Clancy, was baptised at Assumption Catholic Church in Calgary, Canada.
 
Zach Higgins was chosen offensive MVP football player for the year by his football coaches.  He is a 7th grader at Prairie Hills Middle School, Hutchinson.
 
Lorraine Ryan returned home after spending several days in St. George, Utah visiting her sister, Jonel & Gordon Reynolds.
 
Billie Slemp has returned home from Hays Medical Center where she was a patient for almost a week.
 
Jeremy and Ashley Slemp have moved to Michigan.  Jeremy is the grandson of Billie and James Slemp and son of Joe and Kay Slemp.
 
Sue Coffman takes her volleyball team to Salina for the 3A State tournament this weeekend, October 29-30.  Jerry Higgins will officiate their match.
