Winter 1935/36
Christine Pivonka gave a Halloween party at her home Thursday evening.  Guests came in costume and were Bobby and Jimmie Wharton, Dorothy Elmore, Goldie, Doris and Helen Higgins, Doris and Bobby Roughton, Glenda Pedigo, Bertie Joy Twiselton, Norma and Shirley Sperry, Norma and Joan Ryan, Helen McKittrick, Uberta Warta, Donna Schertz,
 
Locust Grove School will have a Thanksgiving program and pie supper Wednesday evening.  The school is four miles north and two miles west of town.
 
Wendell Conrad was accidentally thrown from the back of a car Sunday evening.  He received wounds to his leg and head.
 
Students home for the holidays: Ruth Moran, Leonard Dugan, Lester Doerr, Franklin Elmore, Deward Lawson, Wesley Stephens, Dorothy Davidson, George Donecker, Lillian Austin, Charlotte Norlin and Marceline Moran. 
 
Lorene and August Schutte, Naoma Kueffer, Doris and Dean Birdsong, Patrick Higgins, Melvin Metz, Lena Lee Peer, Orville Durand, Betty Jo Twiselton, Doris Carpenter, David Hunt, Kenneth and Allen Showalter, Eddie Suher, Caroline Parrish, Daryl and Charles Glaspy enjoyed a New Year’s party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. D.D. Hunt.
 
Ralph Tanck, Hugh Mullins, Perry VanWinkle and Bennie Peer furnished entertainment for the Father-Son banquet at the Methodist Church.
 
1945/46
Bennie Thompson was one of the three Kansas students to win honorable mention in the National Science Talent search.
 
Vic Whitis, Brownell purchased the Nowles Confectionary last week and took charge Thursday (Tillie’s).
 
Joan Ryan is attending Kansas State College.
 
1955/56
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Gaschler twin daughters October 23, 1955.
 
Albert Oller is in the Army and stationed in Ft. Carson, Colorado.
 
Augustine (Hippy) Thompson has been appointed as a squad leader of his recruit company at Great Lakes training center.
 
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Reed Bullock, a daughter, Frances Dian November 25, 1955 in LaCrosse.
 
The McCracken Youth Center opened Friday in St. Mary’s Hall.  The club was started by the Athenian Club.  Officers are:  John Hanson, Ona Ruth Dixon, Larry Eisenhour, Faye Smith, Donna Knight, Bill Wierman, Carl Smith and Melissa House.
 
The grade school basketball team received new uniforms.
 
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Janke a son, Ivan Dale born January 20, 1956 in LaCrosse.
 
1965/66
McCracken Mustangs will open their season Friday with Odin.  Those on the squad are Daryl North, Ronald Rein, Doug Higgins, Jim Brack, Jim Brown, David Davenport, David Halbleib, Richard Higgins, Donald Schuckman, Richard Showalter, Kirby Wendler, Bill Wetzel, Doug Whitis, Dennis Elias, Larry North, Mike Peters, Danny Petz, Terry Peters, Benny Rogers and Kenneth Mills.
 
 Cheerleaders for MHS are Dixie Walker, Madeline Rein, Karen Norlin and Janice Halbleib; baton twirlers are Patricia Foos, Ruth Ann Sloan and Linda Irvin.
 
The Junior Class Play “Mr. Co-ed” cast is:   JoFaye Gaschler, Rosemary Moran, Stephen Anderson, Ronnie Rein, Ruth Ann Sloan, Luann Grumbein, Karen Norlin, Dennis Peters, Carolyn Mason, Madeline Rein, Kathleen Rourke and Tony Harp.
 
Members of the National Honor Scoiety in McCracken High School are Arlyn North, Sarah Casey, Linda Irvin, Jan Halbleib, Doug Higgins, Elaine Wetzel, Dixie Walker and Karen Norlin.
 
1975/76
Maureen Janke and Jay Georg were married November 1, 1975 at St. Mary’s Church. 
 
The Tipton Cardinals beat the Mustangs 20-12 on Friday.  The team recently lost Layne Morgan and Jim Casey to injuries.
 
Eleven sophomores, juniors and seniors joined the drama team coached by Rich Billinger.  Four events went to the State contest where they all received a I rating. Sue Skillet’s dramatic interpretation, “The Scarlet Ibis,” Kim McCormick’s original oration on “The CIA,” Lynette Legleiter’s prose reading, “Ask a Foolish Question,” and the one-act play, “The Clocks”.  Other members are Janet Unrein, Paulette Healy, Robin Schuckman, Larry Buster, Bruce Davis, Marsha Healy, and Ellen Davis.
 
1995/96
There are two new babies to report in November.  A baby girl, Kelli Marie was born to Steve and JoLinda Sloan, a baby boy, Marshall Dean to Dean and Kim Jay.
 
Congratulations to Bryan and Treva Bergquist on the birth of a daughter, Anna Mae, born October 21, 1995. 
 
Congratulations to Freddie and Kim Taylor on the birth of a new baby boy, Andrew Michael.
 
Congratulations to John Moran and Ellen Merchant who were married November 4, 1995.
 
Congratulations to Doug Elias and Stacy Rupp on their recent marriage.
 
Congratulations to Tom and Nettie Chesnut on the birth of a son, Colby Davis, December 14, 1995.
 
Congratulations to Ronn and Laura Martin on the birth of a daughter December 28, 1995.  She has been named Sarah Joy.
 
Shannon arrived recently in Gnornevakus, Bosnia.  He is with the Special Forces.

Deaths

Edith Phillips 83, died November 19, 2005 at LaCrosse. She married Daniel W. Phillips in McCracken. He died March 19, 1982. A son, Ken survives.

Joni Lynn Rolo, 48, Ness City died November 27, 2005. She was a sister-in-law of Rose Jones.

Elmore Ryan, 87, died December 5, 2005 at Hays. He is survived by his wife, Lorraine, to whom he was married for 50 years; son Glenn E. Ryan, Jr.; daughter, Cathie Ryan Shapiro and her husband Martin Shapiro; grandchildren, Jessica and Lauren Shapiro, Crystal Ryan, Nicole Ryan; great-grandsons, Anton and Kaden Foust; sisters, Norma Bisagno and Joan Buster. Elmore was a banker and civic leader. He was a decorated World War 11 veteran. He was a 1936 graduate of McCracken High School.

Jack Mendenhall, 69, LaCrosse died December 5, 2005 at LaCrosse. His sister Jeanette Rogers and brother-in-law, Walter Rogers live here. Jack was sheriff of Rush County.

Francis Fletcher, Albuquerque, N. M. died in November. She was the wife of the late Earle Fletcher.

Buddie D. Schrott, 73, died December 14, 2005 at Rush Center. He daughter, Brenda Legleiter and her husband Rogers, grandchildren, Lisa and Brian Legleiter live at McCracken. Burial was at Rush Center.

Willetta M. Herdman, 81, died December 20, 2005, at Ness City. She was a 1941 graduate of McCracken High School. She was the daughter of Glenn and Beulah Washburn Gordon. She married Oliver Herdman on August 10, 1941. He died May 26, 2000. She is survived by sons, Harold, Leroy, Terry and a daughter Glenda Pfannenstiel; brother Richard Gordon, sister, Lillian Irvin, 12 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren. Burial was in the McCracken City Cemetery. Willetta operated the Family Parlor and was a supporter of the McCracken Rodeo.

Sylvia Lyda, 94, died December 30, 2005 at Great Bend. She married Carl Lyda on October 3, 138. He died January 23, 1999. Her daughter, Janet Herdman and husband Harold live in McCracken. Other survivors are a son, Gary, six grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Burial was at Rush Center.

Katharen L. Rodeman, 102, died January 5, 2006 at Wheatridge, Colo. She moved to McCracken from Big Sandy, Tenn. in June 1916. She graduated from McCracken High School in 1922. She married Charles Rodeman on March 28, 1937. He died March 20, 1972. She was a school teacher. She is survived by a son Kyle, daughters, Reva Rodeman-Lloyd and Carla Rodeman; sister Ruth Yawger, 3 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. Burial was in McCracken City Cemetery.

Rita Edith McGaughey Stucky died December 14, 2005. She was born in Ness County to John and Mary McGaughey. She married Robert Stucky. One of her sisters was Ursula "Tot" Wilson. Burial was in California. She is survived by a son, sister Jo Carroll and three grandsons.

John Greenway, 93, Chelan, Wash. died January 6, 2006. He was a brother of the late Clifford Greenway. He is survived by three children, Jerry, Kathy and Julie all of Chelan.

Icis Eisenhour broke her femur in a fall. She is recuperating at Good Samaritan at Hays.

Austin McGaughey medaled at the quiz bowl in Bazine. He is an 8th grader at LaCrosse Middle School.

Sylvester Conrad celebrated his 90th birthday on November 26. Family here to help celebrate were Richard, Linda and Michael Conrad, St. Louis; Andrew Conrad, Rolla, Mo.; Marilyn Hopper, Pretty Prairie; Mike Hopper, Goodland; Neil, Rhonda, Chandler and Ashleigh Allen, Wichita; Randy Conrad, Karen Matel and son, Kyle; and Roy and Phyllis Conrad.

Frances Casey celebrated her 80th birthday with a family dinner on November 24 hosted by her 11 children. Karen Shumake, Patricia Harman, Cheryl Wiesner, Daryl Casey, Don Casey, Jim Casey, Carolyn Schadel, Jerry Casey, Kevin Casey, Chris Casey, Laura Linsey and their families.

A toothpick holder from Brownell Grain Co., Inc., Norman Green, Mgrs. has been given to the Jail/Museum.

A stirring Veterans Tribute was held at the City Building honoring area veterans. It was conducted by the West-Burch American Legion Post 59. The McCracken United Methodist Bell Choir directed by Arlene Gilbert performed. Members are Ruthanne Crawshaw, Kelsee Rogers, Sheryl Rogers, Deb Rogers, Dena Irvin, Kerri Morgan, Sharon Irvin, Bailey Venters. Veronica Baus presented the reading "I am Americaa". The 4-H presented the flag. Sheryl Rogers did a version of the Pledge of Allegiance edited by Red Skelton. Veterans recalled their service. Mike Stephens brought a display of World War 11 uniforms and military items including a Japanese Kamikaze pilot uniform.

Technical Sergeant Debra Gaunt recently graduated from the Supply Management Craftsman Course at Lackland AFB, San Antonio, Texas. She has 18 years combined service, both active duty Air Force and U. S. Air National Guard.

Richard Showalter is driving a brand new Cadillac limo. Give him a ring if you want to "go somewhere" in style!

Congratulations to Ben and Nancy Anderson on their 50th wedding anniverary.

Kyra Horesky, Hoisington, was on the honorable mention team for volleyball from the Hutchinson News. Krya also made the Mid-Central all league lst team.

Those attending the Flack-Moses reunion held in Salina were Alberta Moses Gay, Terri Crough Johnson and Gary, Richard and Vida Moses, Cheryl Moses Konzem and Gail, Ryan Konzem and Lisa, Michela and Dakota, Shane Konzem and Branden, Janet Moses Moody and Jack, Beth Moses Macey, Richard Moses, John (Jack) Moses, David Moses and June, Earl William (Bill) Moses and Priscilla, Roger Moses, Scott Moses and Missy, Brian Moses and Debra and family, Carolyn Lohnes Rohden, LuAnn Lohnes Penka, Lois Earl Brown, Andy, Janis Leison and girls, Dean Gilbert, Clifford and Arlene Gilbert and granddaughters, Hazel Earl Wade, Maxine Moses Jellison, Lyna Gilbert Lero, Edna Earl Moses. The all enjoyed dinner at Somolon.

Progress is being made on the housing grant according to John Zeller, city commissioner. Some of the houses have been completed and work is beginning on he others. This grant is making the property and the town look better.

Tim Rues has given a map to the Jail/Museum. It is an original with copyrights of 1897 and 1902. The towns shown are Hampton, Saunders, Linndale, Liebenthal, Fingal, McCracken, Hargrave, LaCrosse, Bison, Otis, Alexander, Nekoma, Rush Center, Timken, Shaffer, Flavius, Fenton and Ryan.

J. P. Moran's stetson hat worn at the 50th anniversary in 1937 of the City of McCracken has been given to the Jail/Museum. John Moran wore it for the 100th anniversary.

Camerson Horesky, Hoisington Cardinal football sophomore, was chosen to the Elite 11 second team all area football team by the Hutchinson News. Cameron was chosen by the Mid-Central League for first time offense.

Janice Basgall received her 25 year award of employment at the college at ceremonies at Fort Hays State University. She works in the library department as secretary to the librarian.

Rachel Urban graduated from school in Kansas City. She has been taking a course in message therapy. She will attend John County Community College the spring semester. Johan and Melanie Zeller attended graduation ceremonies.

Allen and Janice McCloy, our rodeo provider, attended the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas.

St. Mary's Catholic Church was given permission to have mass on November 26 and December 31 by Bishop Gilmore.

Dorothy Guidry purchased the home of the late Joe and Betty Casey.

Bob Wolfe was pictured in the Midland Marketing flyer last week presenting an award to Chance Richardson, treasurer of the Ness County Busy Beaver 4-H Club. Midland Marketing was named the Outstanding Business of the Year by the Ness County 4-Hers.

Winifred Healzer, formerly of Alexander, is now living at Cedar Park Place in Great Bend.

Phyllis and Roy Conrad were pictured in the Hays Daily News putting up Christmas decorations at St. Mary's rectory.

A feature article appeared in the Hays Daily News about Charlie's Service. Those pictured with the article were Priscilla and Mitch Jacobs and Bill Lovitt.

Lexi Barnes, daughter of Bruce and Carol Barnes of Greensburg, was a member of a dance group that performed at half time at the Greensburg-Jetmore basketball game.

Lucille Crotinger is living at Prairie Sunset Home in Pretty Prairie.

A memorial has been given to the McCracken Public Library in memory of Charles and Wanda Walker from Diana Hart, Dennis Walker, Dixie Williams and Gary Walker.

Marci Penner, who has been kind to McCracken in her book and in articles in the Kansas Sampler Magazine, will receive the Distinguished Kansan of the Year Award on Kansas Day.

Dwight and Sharolyn Eisenhour have moved from Paola to Cimmaron.

The Jail/Museum has received a Foster Brothers baseball shirt and a McCracken Baseball Uniform #15. A brass plate was also donated from a Town Team Tournament at Schoenchen in 1960 sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. Team members include Vic Higgins, Bill Lovitt, Bill Moran, Chas. Jacobs, Bob Peters, Diz Washaliski, Merle Rolf, Kay Fear, Glen Smith, Eldon Brozek and Bob Fear. These items were given by Bill Lovitt.

A candle light Christmas Eve service was held at the Methodist Church.

Pris Jacobs has a new addition to her family. The Neal Jacobs family gave her a new Boston terrier puppy for Christmas. She has been christened with the name Daisy Faye.

Sarah Martin celebrated her 10th birthday at the home of her grandparents, Jan and Arlyn North. Dave Libberton played Santa Claus to a 24 year old young man in Madrid, Iowa. Dave delivered a Retro-scooter to him for Christmas. Suzanne Azzarella delivered a scooter to North Plate, Neb.

Noel Lipton has donated his book "With Intent" to the Jail/Museum. It is being released in Denmark, England, Sweden, Canada and the United States. It is a "bold and thrilling crime adventure". The setting is in rural Kansas and Seattle, Wash.

Dan and Pat Petz celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary January 2.

Les and Rose Diehl hosted a buffet at their home in Topeka for Roe's siblings, Tom, Tim, Tony, Alicia, and Cathy and their mother Arline along with friends of Les and Rose.

Congratulations to Edith Moses Blair on the birth of a new great granddaughter, Elyse Edith Strader, born January 3, 2006 in St. Louis.

Signe and Gerald Barnes were in Nashville for the AFBF State Women's Convention. Signe is a member of the committee. They visited the Jack Daniels Distillery, Country Music Hall of Fame, Wild Horse Saloon, Grand Ole Opry.

Two swimming pool fund raiser dinners have been planned. The dates are February 18 with a spaghetti dinner and April 29 with brisket and baked potatoes. They will also sell brats at the car show in Rush Center for the St. Patrick's celebration. They have raised almost $13,000 of the $15,000 they need for the matching funds on the grant.

The Hutch Warriors fifth and sixth grade boy's basketball teams took first in their respective divisions at the MAYB Big Brothers/Big Sisters Tournament in Lindsborg. Tanner Higgins is a member of both 5th and 6th grade teams.

Lexie Barnes, a first grader in the Greensburg Grade School, was awarded lst place in a poster contest for soil conservation in Kiowa County. She is the daughter of Bruce and Carol Barnes and granddaughter of Gerald and Signe Barnes.

Hoisington took 3rd place in the 2nd annual Hoisington High School boys and girls basketball invitational tournament. Cameron Horesky was named to the boys all tournament team, Kyra Horesky was chosen on the girls all tournament team.

Roger Legleiter, Gary Barnes and Coleen Kern attended the SPRA Rodeo banquet held for board members this weekend in Garden City. Janice McCloy also attended. The McCracken Rodeo was awarded the Committee of the Year Award. Jack Wilson received the supporter of the year award.

Mike and Jerilyn Stull attended the Denver-Pittsburg football playoff game in Denver.

Those attending the rodeo meeting Monday evening at the McCracken City Building were Roger Legleiter, Mark Brackney, Bill Greenway, Gary Barnes, Jerilyn Stull, Bet McCormick, Coleen Kern, Scott Littler and Kerri Morgan.

The Ellis Railroaders Girls Basketball Team won the Mid-Continent League Tournament at Gross Memorial Coliseum at Fort Hays State University. It was the first time the Ellis girls had won the tournament. Whitney Taylor, daughter of Rod and Bernadette Taylor is a freshman starter for the team. Christina Unrein, daughter of James and Diana Unrein, is a cheerleader. The Plainville boys team won 4th place. Senior Justin Casey, son of Jerry and Karen Casey, is a member of the Cardinal team.
