Karen Brenner Becker, 66, died December 10, 2006 at Cherry Village Nursing Home in Great Bend. She was born June 25, 1940 in Great Bend, the daughter of Albert Patrick and Adella Mary Machal Brenner. She is survived by two sons, two daughters and two sisters. Her dad Albert Brenner was born in McCracken, the son of Raymond and Ethel Coleman Brenner. The burial for Karen was in the Great Bend Cemetery.
Sylva Marie Woodard, a resident of the Rush County Nursing Home, has given Austin McGaughey a Teddy Bear that is 100 years old. Austin is donating it to the McCracken/Jail Museum. Sylvas mother was Sylva Ireta Patten Woodard and the bear was given to Sylva Marie on her first birthday in 1911 in Bird City, Kansas. Austin decorated Sylvas Christmas tree last year and he did again this year. The tree this year was given to Sylva from Kate Ryan.
The home of Les and Rose Diehl was featured in the Topeka Capital Journal on Saturday, December 9. The 14 foot-high ceiling in their great room accommodates a 13 foot-tall Christmas tree. It is the focal point of their coordinated decorations and is covered with red and gold glass ball ornaments and red ribbons outlined with gold that are tied around the ends of the tree branches to create bows. Miniature white lights complete the tree. They also have lots of paintings, antiques and hand-thrown pottery. Les is vice-president/general counsel secretary of American Home Life Insurance Company and Rose is midday announcer and program director on KMAJ-FM Radio Station.
Congratulations to Don Kizer and Krissi Wolfe on their marriage Sunday, December 17, 2006 in Woodward, Oklahoma. She is the grand daughter of Pete and Lola Oller Rixon.
Ray and Marilyn Slemp, Lawton, Oklahoma, were here visiting family and friends over this weekend. Ray and his brother James attended a gun show held in Larned on Saturday. Marilyn, Carolyn Thompson and Shirley Higgins motored to Great Bend and on to Ellinwood Friday where they watched the Hoisington Cardinals win four games over Ellinwood...the varsity boys and girls and the junior varsity boys and girls.
Noel Lipton has donated a washing machine to the Jail/Museum. He found it in the attic of his home (formerly Mrs. Klines) It is a 1911 Rapid Washer made by C. T. Childers, Galesburg, Ill. (It resembles a plunger).
Priscilla Jacobs went to Wichita on Saturday afternoon where she rode with Neal, Amy and Tessa Jacobs to Woodward, Oklahoma for the wedding of Krissi Wolfe and Don Kizer.
Cameron Horesky was a unanimous first-team all-MCAA league and all-state selection as a running back for the Hoisington High football team. The Cardinal junior ran for 1,233 yards and tallied 1,979 all-purpose yards and scored 25 total touchdowns. He also finished the season as the leading rusher for playoff games for all classes (1A through 6A) at 180 yards per game. He was named to the Hutchinson News Elite 11 for 3A and the Elite 22 for all classes.

Santa Claus delivered candy sacks around town when he was in McCracken Sunday afternoon. They were wonderful with lots of nuts and candy. Thanks!!

John and Roy Langdon, Columbia, MO. came Thursday. John took a stone post home and had it engraved for his grave marker. They brought it back and on Friday had it set at the Hampton Cemetery. Many of his relatives are buried at Hampton. In the evening Francis and Julia Zeller took them to Cedar Bluff to see the 15 miles of Christmas lights. John and Roy visited with Chet and Joyce Rogers, Walter and Janey Rogers while they were in McCracken.
We had copies of the McCracken History Volumes l and 2 re-printed at OPI in Great Bend. If you would like a copy let us know. The UPS fellow stopped by this week and got one. His family is the Warta family that lived in McCracken in the house where Fred Taylor now lives.
Mass will be held at St. Marys Catholic Church on Saturday, December 23, at 4:00 P.M. with Father David Kraus presiding. All are welcome to attend this Advent Mass. We received permission from Bishop Gilmore and Father Rene for this mass.
Casey Brown has been promoted to E5 Second Class Petty Officer in the Navy. He is stationed as Sasebo, Japan aboard the U. S. S. Patriot. He has been in the Navy for 18 months.
The lights are especially pretty in town. Drive around and enjoy this Christmas weekend.
Jean Schutte calls her northeast part of town, like the Griswolds. It is amazing how movies seep into our language.

December 1906
Robert Start is building a new residence on his farm one mile east of town, 16 x 26, one story.
The editor saw a threshing outfit clearing up the years wheat crop puffing away west of Bazine. Usually the wheat is all out of the stack by this time.
December 1936
Mrs. Elmer Derr won the quilt given at the St. Marys ladies dinner on Thanksgiving.
Fourteen new lockers have been installed for the basketball girls. Captains elected this year are Lucille Elmore and Helen Irvin.
December 1946
Martin Klee and Nick Higgins have bought the brick building south of the hotel of B. H. Yawger.
The Muller twins, James David and John Douglas, were brought over Saturday from the Hadley Memorial hospital at Hays and are visiting at the home of their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Elmore.
December 1956
Mary Ellen Walker and Tommie OLouglin were married in the Methodist Church at Hays.
