Saturday afternoon, Dec, 15, Sharon Irvin and Sally Irvin went to Hays for a graduation reception for Cory Betz, youngest son of Tom and Penny Betz.  He graduated with his MBA in Human Resources for Fort Hays.  Cory works for Sunflower Electric in Hays as the Strategic Projects Administrator. Cory lives in Hays with his wife Lynette and children Evan and Eva.
 
Marilyn Slemp, age 74, Lawton, Oklahoma, died Friday, December 14, 2012 at her home.  She was born May 6, 1938, in Madera, California, to Robert and Bessie (Jordan) Whalley.  Marilyn joined the Marine Corps in 1957 and served until 1961.  During that time she played softball and basketball.  After her service she played for a semi-pro softball team.  She worked at George Air Force Base in California where she met her future husband, Ray Slemp.  They were married October 14, 1967 in Yacucate, California.  She is survived by her husband Ray of the home, a son, Major James Slemp, who is stationed at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, three grandchildren, Nickolas, Christopher and Katelyn; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jim and Billie Slemp, LaCrosse.  Cremation has take place.
 
Friday evening, December 14, James and Billie Slemp treated the following for dinner at Golden Corral in Hays; Jim & Lisa Benteman, Twila & Hoop Higgins, Jean Schutte, Bruce & Merydthe Winter, Russ Linsey. Afterwards some went and looked at the Christmas lights.
 
Twila Higgins hosted Faith Sharing Monday afternoon at her home. Those attending were Jean Schutte, Jeanette McCormick, Carolyn Thompson, Phyllis Conrad & Shirley Higgins.

Cream Candy                           Donna North
12 cups sugar
1 1/2 qt. cream
1 qt. white syrup
3 lbs walnuts
Mix all ingredients except walnuts until sugar melts down, add nuts & cook to soft ball stage, about 1 hour. When it starts to cool pour into buttered pans. Makes 9 lbs.
 
Banana Bread                           Anna Klema
1 three fourths cup flour
three fourth tsp soda
1 & one fourth tsp cream of tarter
Sift together 3 times
Add One half tsp salt
---------------------------
1 third cup shortening
two thirds cup sugar     
2 eggs
1 cup mashed bananas  bake 325* for 1 hour
Beat well
Mix alternately with flour

Marge Moran, Nicole Kirk and Michele Moran attended the Madrigal Feat at Wichita North High School last weekend. Nick Moran was a member of the chorus.

6 foot 3 inch Senior Nick Petz of Hays High School was featured in the December 10, 2012 Hays Daily News. At the Hays City Shoot-out he averaged 9.7 points per game and his shots helped to win in overtime against Newton. In his first game as a starter he scored 11 against Colby. He is a fearless shooter. He shoots 42.9 percent from the 3-point range. Sounds like he has the Petz genes. His grandmother, Dolores Petz, lives in rural McCracken.

West-Burch American Legion Post 59 has once again decorated all veterans graves for Christmas with wreaths and red ribbons. The families of veterans appreciate this project.

Susan Keith and Carolyn Thompson attended the funeral of Juanita Pederson at Everest, Kansas, on Friday morning.
