Hampton Item: Bob Brooks took a contract to carry mail from Ft. Hays to Ft. Dodge over the Ft. Hays - Ft. Dodge Trail. Captain Edwards bought a half interest in the contract. They had two three-seated rigs which carried six passengers each. It took three days to make the trip from Hays to Dodge City. One stage would start at Hays and the other at Dodge. The contractors had their headquarters at Hampton with extra horses. The stage was nearly always full. Lots of government agents and scouts were passengers. They could either go across on the stage or go around on the railway to Kansas City and then to Dodge City which was an expensive process. They charged $6.00 for the three-day trip by stage.
