It is never too late to pay your MHS alumni dues. . .Vic Parson sent his in this week, he had misplaced his letter. The alumni has given donations so far this year to the Library for their foodless food sale; purchased a big can opener to the McCracken Rodeo; lights and flags at the City Park; paint for benches at the swimming pool and a new electric stove and micro-wave oven for the Community Building.
Butler County Community College football team played Snow, Utah in the Top of the Mountain Bowl in Salt Lake City on Saturday. They won their 5th National championship by defeating Snow 56-27. Zac Stetler is a member of the Butler County team. He is the son of Kevin and Pam Stetler, Hoisington.
Santa Claus will be in McCracken, Sunday, December 16 at 3:00. After Santa please come to the United Methodist Church for Come to the Stable, a display of different nativity sets which begins at 4:00.
Marge Elias spent Thanksgiving with Doug, Staci and Maggie Elias in Concordia. Doug came after his mother Thursday morning, she enjoyed dinner, shopping in Manhattan on Friday and returned home on Sunday.
An article appeared in the Hutchinson News on Thursday about Life is not so jolly for Santa. He keeps his white gloved hands where parents can see them and buys liability insurance, just in case and he must never make a promise he cant keep. He doesnt ask for names or where children live that might arouse suspicion. Hes given up the pipe and the jelly belly might be next. How Sad!!!

Seven adventurous souls boarded the Rush County Transportation Bus on Tuesday for a day trip to Salina. They shopped til they dropped at the Mall, Walmart, Hobby Lobby and ate at Red Lobster. Our chauffeur was Tracy Lewis. Those enjoying the day were Shirley Higgins, Susan Rebel, Roger and Norma McNair, Diana McNair, Charlotte Ochs and Carolyn Thompson.
Our sympathy to the Morgan family on the loss of their sister, LaRetta Mae Fitzwater, 62, who died at Olathe on November 18, 2002. She was the daughter of Friend and Velma Morgan. She graduated from Alexander High School in 1963. She is survived by her husband John Fitzwater, who she married October 19, 1963, a son Darin and a daughter Dawn, four grandchildren, sisters, Leanne Russell and Lorrie Frank, four brothers, Larry, Lance, Layne and Lonnie. Burial was in the Protection Cemetery.
While driving by the Rush County News office I noticed the tree in the little nitch by the door outside, then realized it was all because of the CAT. I can sure relate to that. Cat lovers are sure enjoying the column and pictures of Copy Cat.

Francis and Roberta Wierman spent Thanksgiving weekend at Marilyn and George Sommers in Silver Lake. Other guests were Rita Brethowr, Greensboro, North Carolina; Shane, Jill, Ivan and Tessa Brethowr, Olathe; Ray and Laura Wierman, Bennington; Cindy Wierman, Olathe. Francis and Roberta celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary at the Harvey House at Union Station in Kansas City.
Susan Rebel gave us this item from the LaCrosse paper on October 26, 1894. It was taken from the Leoti Standard. A train consisting of fourteen prairie schooners, containing several Russian families, from Rush county, passed through Leoti Tuesday morning, en route for the famous San Louis Valley, Col. The seven outfits from Liebenthal were included in this train.
The Dream group met at Liebenthal on Friday, November 30. Those attending were Sr. Martina Stegman, Christine Wagner, Kathleen Kuchar, Carol Heiman, Shirley Higgins and Carolyn Thompson.
Our sympathy to the family of Corrine Janke Brenner, 79, who died November 29, 2007 at Hays Medical Center. She was born June 29, 1928 southwest of McCracken to Albert and Emma Koch Janke. She married Earl Brenner February 3, 1948. Survivors include her husband, three sons, Larry, Lowell and Lance Brenner and two daughters, Laytha Gnad and Linda Lichtenwaldt, 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Burial was at St. Joseph Cemetery in Hays. Corrine was the last of the Jankes. She lost six brothers, Lawrence, Lester, Alvin, Harley, Harry and Bob and sisters, Casey Crawford, Ruby Wetzel and Mickey West.
The Christmas Cantata will be held on Sunday, December 9th, at St. Joseph Church in Liebenthal at 3:00 p.m. It is sponsored by the Pro Art Music Club. Everyone is welcome.
At 5:00 p.m. on December 16th you can celebrate Las Posadas at Loretto. You are invited to this Spanish custom in preparation for Christmas. You accompany Mary and Joseph to three homes and return to the church for a closing. There will also be a pot-luck meal and gathering following. Bring your food to the hall before the event begins.
Anna Bergquist of Trego County Elementary, daughter of Bryan and Treva Bergquist and Shannon Keith of Ellsworth Elementary, daughter of Mike and Shannon Keith, were selected to participate in the Northwest District KMEA Elementary Honor Choir, on Saturday at Beach-Schmidt Performing Arts Center at FHSU. Others attending the concert were Don and DeAnna Bergquist and Carolyn Thompson.
Lots of deer hunters were in the area this past weekend, but the weather played a part in how successful they were. Large groups of pheasant hunters still are walking the CRP in flush out birds.
McCracken History Notes
December 1887
The sad news was received last Sunday that Pat Higgins, a brakeman on the Missouri Pacific between Moran and Horace, had fallen from a freight car near Leoti and was killed. There being no marks on the body, it is thought he was killed by the fall as his neck was broken.
T. R Brooke sports a new hat. Its a nine pound boy this time, mother and baby doing well.
December 1907
Miss Mable Twiselton received a very high rating in her examination at the Lindsborg Conservatory of Music higher than some who took the examination as teachers.
Littler and Moran have money to loan at six percent.
December 1937
McCracken High School ended their football season Thanksgiving Day by defeating Otis 26-0 and placed second in the R. E. N. League. David Hunt and Freddie Foster were named co-captains of the 1937 team. They had only two losses this season, Bazine and Ellis. They ran rampant over LaCrosse, Bison, Ness City, Hanston, Otis and Ransom.
Girls reporting for practice this season are Lucille and Faye Elmore, Bernetta Marak, Lorene Schutte, Arietta Foster, Mabel Ree, Naomi Kueffer, Charlotte Temple, Marjorie Norlin, Orva Jean Dougherty, Norma Jean Fear, Willetta and Lillian Gordon, Pearl McGaughey, Freda Irvin and Doris Carpenter.

Warren Irvin, who is attending Salt City Business College in Hutchinson, spent Thanksgiving vacation with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Vernie Irvin.
Mr. and Mrs. T. R. Jennings have moved from the farm to McCracken for the winter months.
The George Gerritzen family moved to town last week and are living in the Lloyd Kueffer house in west McCracken.
Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. James Peters of McCracken on the birth of a daughter on December 10 at the Baker hospital in LaCrosse.

Ethel Coleman Brenner died November 30 in Great Bend. She was the wife of Ray Brenner and sister of Teresa Higgins.

Mr. and Mrs. Pete Derr will celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary on Saturday, December 17, with a dance in the LaCrosse City Auditorium.

Scott Mays is a returning starter for the Bazine Indians. Others on the squad are Adam Showalter and Jeff Crawshaw. Melissa Morgan is a member of the Lady Indians team. At Ransom, team members include Jason Moran, Bruce Barnes, Kim Cao, David Moran, Kelly Petz and Reed Blackwell. At Utica Billy and Lynnette Harp. At LaCrosse are Bryan Bergquist, Clayton and Treva Wilson and Brett Gilbert and at Ellis is Heath North.
David Moran was selected for the District V KMEA honor band.
