This was written by my granddaughter, Lindsey Tacha. Boomer has been such a special dog to our family. When he was younger, he was my grandpa's farm dog, and he was the wildest, craziest puppy I'd ever seen. After my grandpa passed away, my grandma tried to take care of him, but he was just too much for anyone to handle, so she put Boomer up for adoption. He was so wild that they had to send him to get trained, and it just so happened that he was sent to be trained in Norton at the correctional facility. My mom somehow found out that he was there and it was meant to be, so our family decided to adopt him. Boomer has been with our family through our hardest times and our happiest times. I know he personally made me feel so much safer when he was around and we always loved to snuggle. In our family, our dogs are not just pets; they are family. Boomer is going to be missed by our family, and by his "little brother" Hunter (Bubba) who has kept him so much younger, but his pain and suffering will finally be gone. You know they say "All Dogs Go to Heaven" and I know without a doubt he will be right up there with my dad and grandpa. (Kayla had to have the dog ‘put down’ Monday).

McCracken History Notes
Shirley inherited recipes from two of her aunts, Phoebe Elias and Margaret Hair. Here are some of the recipes I have, thought you would be interested in the names on some of them.

Angel Food Pie – Ethel Edgington
4 1/2 tbsp cornstarch  1 1/2 cups boiling water
3/4 cups sugar             3/8 tsp salt
3 egg whites             3 tbsp sugar
1 1/2 tsp vanilla         1 baked pastry shell 9”
1/2 cup whipped cream               1/2 of 1 sq. bitter chocolate grated.
Mix cornstarch and sugar in a sauce pan on tope of double boiler. Add boiling water, stirring constantly and cook until thick and clear. Add salt to egg whites and beat until stiff; add 3 tbsp sugar and vanilla beating until egg whites are creamy. Pour hot cornstarch mixture slowly over the gee whites beating continuously. Cool slightly and fill pastry shell. Cover with whipped cream seasoned with sugar and vanilla and sprinkle grated chocolate or nut meats over top. This pie should be made at least two hours before serving.

English Toffee – Phoebe Elias
1 cup sugar               1/2 lb butter
3 tbsp water             1 tsp vanilla
4 small Hershey bars                3/4 cup finely chopped nuts
Place 1st four ingredients in sauce pan and cook until brown, about 10 minutes, stirring all the time to prevent burning. Pour into buttered pan. Lay warmed Hershey’s on top of candy and spread out, sprinkle nuts over the top, cool and break into small pieces. The browner your cooked candy gets the harder it will be.

Our sympathy to the family of Merlin H. Ohlemeier, 86, who died November 24, 2012 at WaKeeney. He was born July 4, 1920 near McCracken to Henry William and Mabel Irma Lynn Ohlemeier. He was a 1944 graduate of LaCrosse High School. Burial was in the Kansas Veterans Cemetery at WaKeeney.

We lost two World War 11 veterans last week, Merlin Ohlemeier and James K. "Whitie" Wierman.

Tribute: Whitie Wierman was a patron of McCracken Public Library and read every Western book that came in on the Rotating Books van. Whitie's funeral was special because of the two relative priests who officiated at the mass. He was also honored by a member of American Legion Post # 59 of McCracken, Babe Gilbert, with the reading of "Just a Common Soldier" and a salute. Whitie was extremely proud of his military service and all the friends he met along the way. As recounted by his family, he always had a story to tell and they were all grateful in the telling. Family was important to him and and he was important to the large Wierman family. He was a horseman and was privileged to be involved in helping save the famous white Lippizzaner Stallions during World War 11. He had many pictures of these beautiful horses with him astride them. They were from the famous Spanish Riding School of Vienna, Austria. "Come good and faithful servant" RIP

Ellsworth played basketball at Lyons on Friday night. When we walked in there was Mary Higgins, running the scoreboard and Doug Higgins, announcing. It was nice to see and talk to them. Lyons has very good boys and girls teams. Always look forward to going in to that gym as in front is the large lion in a case. It reminds me of my days at Great Bend and the Black Panther.

Sheila Brown was home for Thanksgiving from Wichita State University. She hurt her knee in dance class, and will have surgery after the semester is over.

Those decorating St. Mary's Catholic Church for the "A Country Christmas Home Tour" December 9 from 2:30 to 7:00 p.m. and for mass on Saturday, December 29, at 6:30 p.m. were Bet and Jeanette McCormick, Twila Higgins, Jean Schutte, Marge Moran and Roy and Phyllis Conrad. McCracken United Methodist Church will serve refreshments during the tour and will will have a Soup Supper from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Our sympathy to the family of Brittany Nicole Curry, 23, who died November 20, 2012 at Hays Med. She was the daughter of Buddy B. and Melissa R. Kelley Curry. Her family lived at Hargrave. She was a member of Sunflower Diversified Services in Great Bend.
