1. Charles Jesse "Buffalo" Jones, Garden City. Zane Grey also featured Jones in his book "The Last of the Plainsmen".

2. Grace Bedel age 11. She lived in Delphos later with her husband George Billings.

3. She was the wife of Kinsley native Earl Winfield Spencer, Jr. He was a graduate of the Naval Acadamy and established a permanent Naval Station in San Diego which is now the Naval Base Coronado. She later married Edward V111 of England and became the Duchess of Windsor.

4. Zebulon Pike. He visited Cheyenne Bottoms and recorded the area nearly covered with ponds.

5. Chief Dull Knife, Lone Wolf and his tribe traversed Kansas killing 40 Kansas settlers. The Northern Cheyenne Tribe participated in the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876.
They were forced onto reservations following that battle.

Those who helped Charlotte Ochs celebrate her 90th birthday Saturday evening were Travis, Alice and Tyler McNair, Curtis McNair, Ray Lucero, Jimmy Cheryl, Zach and Parker Mueller, Michelle & Samatha Sanchez, Colorado; Phil Ochs, Salina; Tony and Butch Harp, Craig and Deb Rixon, Norma McNair, McCracken; Galen Watkins, Wichita; Brett, Tammy & Preston Carlson, Bison. Joanne Micheli, Richard & Johnny Mac Showalter stopped by for cake and ice cream.
 
Paul L. McCracken, Rangely, Colorado was a visitor of McCracken on Thursday looking for information on J.K. McCracken, founder of our fair city.
 
Edward Francis Legge, 87 of Phoenix, Arizona passed away on November 5, 2012. Edward was born in McCracken, Kansas. He was a WWII US Navy Veteran. He is survived by 13 children, 36 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. Memorial mass was held on Saturday, November 10 at St. Jerome Catholic Church. Burial was at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona.
 
Helena McGaughey & Austin met Nancy Baker in Manhattan last Tuesday for lunch and shopping.
 
George & Marilyn Sommers left Nov 2 for a 4 day trip to Niagara Falls and then flew from New York to Dublin Ireland where they took an escorted motorcoach trip. They also visited a cousin of George's in Carrickmacross, Ireland. They flew home Nov 18.

Hunters at the home of Hoop and Twila Higgins this weekend were Doug Higgins, Lyons; Allen Roth, Hays; Cody Kinnier and friends, Ryan and Jerry, Rich Higgins and brother-in-law Nick, all of Lakin.
 
There are 2 quilt racks in the library that belong to someone who brought quilts during the rodeo, one is larger than the other. You may pick them up during library hours.
 
The beautification committee appreciates those who helped and came to the breakfast served to hunters on both weekends and to those who came for the spaghetti supper Saturday. Relay for Life appreciates those who brought and bought desserts.
 
The Hutchison High School football team defeated Derby High School Friday night in the last 50 seconds of the ball game 29-28 in front of a crowd of 7,000 in Derby. They play Shawnee Mission West Saturday afternoon at Yager Stadium in Topeka at 1:00 p.m.

From Tree Shaker – Vol XIII No. 4 – October 1988
25 June 1858
  Dear Father by Law  I now take my pen in hand with hevy hart To inform you that I am well at presant hopeing that These fiew lines may find you in the same state of heath  also to inform you that I under go A vast quantity of trouble by my wife and I want you for your sake and her sake Come and git her and her things and take them away from me before I have to kill her for she will not let me see one minits satisfaction, nor hante in six weeks  day or knight and to Bare Everything I cant do it nor I will not try Much longer for I have tried now till My heart is moast broak and it is to no Afect and if you cannot Come your self send sum other person and git her and her things for to leave here she must for I can’t stand it any longer to be quarld at day and knight and my property killed by her and my life threatened  it is to much to take and I will not take it.
They divorced. They had 2 children – one died in 1859. She remarried and had another child that is believed to have died by 1880. He remarried but no other children listed.
This was in Lawrence County, KY.

Recipe for an Indian Cough Syrup
Tamerack bark, a double hand ful; pulverized dandelion root, 10 cts worth; sprignal root, 10 cts worth, horehound, a small handful; hops, a large handful. Put in a kettle with water to boil for 3 hours and have 2 qts. left. When done boiling drain off and put more water on herbs and boil for another 3 hours, then take out the bark and strain the syrup. Put back in the kettle and boil down to 2 guarts, then sweeten with honey and add a pint of good whiskey. Keep in a cool place. Take a wineglass full just before eating. (This is a recipe from a relative back in the late 1890’s) Shirley 

We hope our readers watched the Dust Bowl special program by Ken Burns on PBS both Sunday and Monday night. Jim Coen's father was Lloyd Coen and his twin brother Floyd his uncle. The little girl that died from dust pneumonia was his aunt. Jim is married to Kathy Huddleston Coen. Let us hope and pray we don't ever have that period in our lives again.
