A surprise 50th birthday get together was held in Hoisington for Chuck Higgins Saturday evening. Family and friends were in attendance.
Steve Orendac, Jeff Jennings and Dean Kolach, Hutch Juco classmates of Jerry and Chuck were here for the weekend. They attended the party in Hoisington where they shared many, many laughs. Jeff works in the Wyandotte County museum in Kansas City; he took back a Yankee on the Prairie book for the museum.

Marge Elias is home after her back surgery in Wichita and is doing very well. We have seen her at church and going into the Golden Agers dinner. Says she feels good.
Mitchell Jacobs had a stint inserted on Thursday. He came home Friday and is doing well. We hope Sandra isnt next.
Jerry Higgins attended a principals meeting last week where he sat by a principal from Western Plains. They started visiting and it was Kevin LaCock of McCracken. Kevin is principal at Ransom. Another small world story.

Katie Showalter was selected for the Southwest Kansas Music Educators Association Middle School Honor Band at Dodge City. She plays the clarinet and represented Western Plains.

McCracken Main Street Literary Society met Tuesday at the Library. Those attending were Tomi Rues moderator, Shirley Higgins, Lorraine Ryan, Arline Rues, Suzanne Randa, Carolyn Thompson and Susan Rebel. They picked the next book to read Ten Best Days of My Life.

The body of S/Sgt. Harley R. Janke, who was killed in northern Italy October 20th, 1944, has been returned from Italy aboard the Army transport, Lawrence Victory. Military services and burial will be at McCracken. He was 27 at the time of his death. He had been oversees about 18 months.

A painting of the McCracken Hotel done by artist Harlon Anderson was dedicated at a Tea at the McCracken Public Library. Also honored were Lucille Lamer and Mary Anne Taylor who were leaving the board after 8 years. New members are King Mason and Wayne Brackney.
