Tim Rues sent a copy of Kansas Preservation, the newsletter of the Cultural Resources Division of the Kansas State Historical Society and a printout of Medal of Honor Recipients with Kansas connections for the museum.  In the magazine there is an article entitled 'Timber Claims Survive Ravages of Time'.  The pictures in the article were provided by Larry Rutter of Meriden, Kansas.  (Larry came to McCracken when we had the Hampton event and showed how to break out a post rock.)  The article features the Gaylord claim in northwest Hampton Township.  William F. Gaylord began planting trees on his timber claim in about 1882.  Varieties planted were eastern cottonwood, black locust, common hackberry, green ash, and Osage orange.  He built a rustic cabin with an outdoor oven in the interior of the claim and it served as a gathering place for picnics for many years.  The Gaylord Ranch was stocked with English cattle breeds and was well known in the area.  Patrick Jennings wrote of Gaylord in his book "In Retrospective, 1880" which we re-published in our Hampton book.
