And a big thank you to our not so little spookies too.

Gary and Elaine Turner, Loveland, Colorado, called on Monday. They are downsizing and moving into Independent Living in Loveland. He has been working on cemetery records for many years for McCracken. He will be providing a CD of the McCracken City Cemetery. Tomorrow, November 3 is his 70th birthday.

The McCracken United Methodist Church will host a “Tribute to Veterans” on Sunday, November 8 at 11:00 A.M. Guest Speaker is Carol Ryan. The Public in invited to attend.

Aden Anderson, son of Gary and Debbie Anderson, Chickasha, Oklahoma, recently had surgery in Oklahoma City to place two rods in his back. He is home now and recuperating.

The giant pumpkin with the black cat at Dennis and Jeannie Elias' was a cute addition to their display.

Ted and Shawna North and boys were coordinated as Supermen and Supergirl. The evening was warm so we had many more spooks out on Halloween. It is always a fun night for all. Some years it is snowing. If El Nino is to be believed we may have lots of snow this winter.

Roxie Rogers Dechant has been nominated for Kansas Teacher of the Year. Roxie received her teaching degree from Fort Hays State University in 1976. Her first year of teaching was in Utica in 1978. She received her Masters in 2005. She teaches at Methodist Youthville in Dodge City. Her parents are Joyce Wilhelm Rogers and the late Chet Rogers.

Kathryn Kochenower, Ottawa, turned 102 on October 19. She is the grandmother of Lynn Kochenower.

Ellen Davis Kershner was pictured on the top of the front page of The Hays Daily News on Sunday, November 1. She was cheering on the LaCrosse Leopards at the State Volleyball tournament at Fort Hays versus Kensington-Thunder Ridge. She is the mother of LaCrosse sophomore volleyball player, Addie Kershner. She is holding a picture of her daughter. On page 6 there is a large picture of Ann Baus, mother of LaCrosse Junior, Olivia Baus. LaCrosse finished fourth. Pictures of the team and members are on page C3 of the Sports section.

We hope everyone will come out on Saturday evening, November 7, for the documentary, “The Road to Valhalla”, a 90 minute Civil War film. Everyone is welcome. There will be a soup supper prior to the film at 5:00 p.m. and the show time at 7:00 p.m. It will be held at McCracken City Community Building. A free will donation will benefit the McCracken Public Library. Documentary filmmaker Ken Spurgeon will be present. The film was voted “Best Documentary of 2015” by the Cowboy Hall of Fame and is narrated by Buck Taylor of Gunsmoke fame. Spurgeon's book and CD's will be available for purchase. McCracken's Tim Rues played a part in the film. More detailed information about the film is in last week's Rush County News. Shannon Foster, coach of Wheatland-Grinnell , whose volleyball team won first in1A-Division 11, at Fort Hays, is the daughter of Joyce and Rick Baalman, Grinnell. Joyce is a cousin of Carolyn Thompson.

Susan Davis visited with a college friend in Oklahoma last week and also her with granddaughter, Mia Davis and family.

Rose Diehl and Arline Rues motored to Kinsley Thursday and visited with Ben Carney, Sonny and Betty Dykes and toured Lewis before coming back to McCracken.

Terry and Helen Showalter, her sister Ann and husband Stan attended the Chief’s – Pittsburg game in Kansas City Sunday.

Jerry Higgins was an official in Salina for sub-state and state volley ball tournament the past two weekends.

I loved all my ‘spooks’ Halloween night. They had such cute costumes and were cute kids.......

Congratulations to Terri Cox as she received the Angel for an Angel 2015 award at Saint Luke's East Hospital in Kansas City. It’s for the exemplary service the nominees provide in the areas of spirituality, integrity, and compassion as they deliver extraordinary care to the patients, families, and staff. Terri was also home in McCracken this weekend to visit her family.

History Notes.

1971 Doug Whitis completed training as a paratrooper at Ft. Benning, GA and will now go to Vietnam. Honor students at Barton County are Jerry Schutte, Donna Rogers, Kent Bible, and Robert Foster. Lynne Hinman has been named 1971 Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow. McCracken Mustangs are rated #1 by the Kansas City Start. Rush County’s official population in the 1970 census was 5,117 down 16.9 percent from the 1960 figure. A blizzard engulfed Rush County Sunday and Monday. 30-40 mph wind drifted the 11 inch snowfall into drifts 12 ft. high. McCracken 8th grade basketball team placed 1st in the Qua-Valley district at Ness City by defeating Jetmore 37-34. Mark Fritzler, Jerry Higgins, Gary Schuckman, Donald Casey and Greg Hinman led the scoring. The 7th grade suffered their first defeat to Jetmore 38-36. Scorers were Jim Casey, Scott Kershner, Chuck Higgins and Tim Rues. Gloria Baus is playing with the Jazz ensemble at Dodge City Juco. MHS climaxed their basketball season when they placed second in the Class 1-A State basketball tournament held in Dodge City. The Blue and Gold banquet was held at the Eastern Star Lodge recently .Boy Scouts are Robin Schuckman, Robbie McGaughey, Tim Rues, Mark McCormick, Bruce Davis, Glen Ryan, Steve Foreman, Fritz Foster, Chuck and Jerry Higgins and Leslie Rogers. Cub Scouts and Webelos are Martin Mills, Shannon McKinney, Larry Hinman, Joe Conner, Mitchell Jacobs, Dale Elias, Jeff McCormick, Larry Buster, Tom Rues and Danny Halbleib. LeeRoy Schuckman, Al Rues, Raymond Mills, Elmore Ryan and Jim Schafer are the adults. Willa Start and Irma Wegher attended the State Bowling tournament in Hutchinson Saturday. MHS boy’s baseball team members: Vic Parsons, John Elmore, Danny Conner, Rick Schwindt, Myron Schuckman, John Brack, Rodney Taylor, Lonnie Irvin, Darwin Grumbein Steve Sloan, Larry Higgins and Daryl Casey. Glenn Conner, coach. Attending St. Matthew’s passion play at Bethany College on Friday was Dight and Leonore House, Arlene Rues and Margaret Hair. McCracken UMC held their consecration services at the new church April 25, 1971. Mark Derr set a new record in the LaCrosse Invitation Track meet with a long jump of 20’9”. Lorraine Norlin tok her kindergarten pupils on a train ride from Hays to Wakeeney onFriday. Ernie Barrett, K-State Athletic Director will be the speaker at the Athletic Banquet May 11. Kent Bible played golf with BCCC in Kansas City. 8th grade graduates: Mike Phillips, Carolyn Boese, Kent Brown, Sally Buster, Mark Fritzler, Julie Seltman, Frits Foster, Linda Sloan, Gary Schuckman, Rosemary Rues, Donald Casey, Debra Webs, Bill Greenway, Nancy Higgins, Allen Kober, Debra Baus, Mike Moran, Sherry Petz, Glen Ryan, Robbie McGaughey, Richard Conrad, Greg Hinman, James Unrein and Jerry Higgins. Brening Western Auto placed first in the Rush County slo-pitch tournament. Among the team members were Vic, Doug and Rich Higgins, Terry Peters, Bub and Lonnie Morgan. Diz Washlaski and Carl Legleiter were initiated into the Isis Shrine of Salina. Glenn Eisenhour retired after 25 years serving as station agent for 25 years. Three flags were presented to USD 395 by the VFW of LaCrosse. They were flown over the Capitol and were sent by Bob Dole. One will fly at the grade school in Alexander, one in McCracken. Greg Buster left Thursday for Europe with the foreign study league for 6 weeks in England, France, Switzerland, Austria, Italy Germany and the Netherlands.
