The McCracken Main Street Literary Society met Tuesday night with the following members present; Ruth Crawshaw, Tomi Rues, Thayne Jones, Roger & Norma McNair, Sandra Jacobs, Susan Rebel, Suzanne Randa and Shirley Higgins. The members were given a word to describe how they would like to improve their life or a word that describes them. The words chosen were: lithe, determined, settled, visionary, uncertainty, curious, dolots, tolerant and industrious. Can you match them with the members?
The American Legion will host a hamburger, fries and chili supper on Saturday, November 13 and Saturday November 20 there will be a sausage and pancake supper. Both meals will be from 6:00 p.m. 8:00 p.m.
The McCracken Beautification committee has planted the trees on Main Street; individuals have planted trees on the golf course; the Smoky Hill Antique Store has rose bushes in front of the store; the former liquor store has been painted; Sandra Jacobs has planted trees west of her home; Rose and Les Diehl have planted trees in front of their house. (No Global Warming for McCracken!)
Last year Walter Rogers told about hunters from South Carolina visiting with him about staying at a Motel in Iola where their pickup and trailer were stolen but later found. They came back this year and stayed the first night in Hays and the rest of their stay in the Bank building in McCracken. They stayed here several days and were seen with Walter and Janey in the Café one evening last week.
Martin and Mary Higgins spent Halloween weekend at their home on West Beech in McCracken; Les and Rose Diehl and Mary Dunn were Wednesday Sunday visitors at their home on West Locust.
A note from Jerry and Karen Casey, Plainville, tells us they had to take their son Andrew to the hospital Friday night after he was hit with a helmet on his leg in the football game with LaCrosse. He came off the field with no feeling in that leg, but luckily it is not broken, only a bruised bone.
Tomi Rues wants to send out a big THANK YOU to all who contributed to the Rush County United Fund Drive. It is wonderful when individuals and businesses in our community donate and truly make a difference.

Father Kenny called. He was in the hospital for four days with pneumonia and then in recovery at the center where he lives. He is doing better and is able to say mass again.
David Dennis, a member of the Kansas State Board of Education, has been named to the Board of Directors of the National Association of State Boards of Education. He will serve a two-year term starting in January and will represent the Central Region of the United States. The National Association represents state and territorial boards and assists with developing education policies and procedures. David is Carolyn Thompsons brother.
Susan and Shannon Keith and Carolyn Thompson attended the lA State Volleyball Division 11 tournament in Hays on Saturday. Their cousin, Allison Polifka, is the coach for Wheatland-Grinnell. They won second place in the championship game against Hutchinson Central Christian.
Doug Higgins was honored at the lA Tournament in Hays for fourteen years of service as an Area Supervisor. Doug and Mary attended the tournament. They were cheering on Central Christian as he had officiated many of their matches. Mike Kastle, formerly of Ransom, was honored for 30 years as an area supervisor. Both Mike and Doug have now retired from these positions.

Rich and Mary Lou Higgins, Lakin, were here for the weekend to visit with his parents, Wilfrid and Twila Higgins.
Central Kansas Library personnel were at McCracken Public Library on Monday to set up the computer codes on all the librarys books.
A large crowd was at the Boondocks for the land sales last Wednesday. Land was sold for the Pete Derr Trust and Alana Rogers.
Jerry Higgins officiated at the 4A state volleyball tournament in Salina; Chuck Higgins did the 1A tournament in Hays. Chuck and Doug officiated together at the Regional tournament in Great Bend.

The Alexander post office was burglarized Sunday night and as we are informed, about $90 taken.
More than 2,300 students were enrolled at the Kansas state Agricultural College last year, the largest enrollment of any agricultural college in the world.
November 1940
Jack Paul Wilson, Ronald English, Donald Curtis, Charlene Brackney and Reba Davenport were dinner guests of Bobby Elmore helping him celebrate his seventh birthday.
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Walker and family have moved to LaCrosse.
November 1960
The Rush county sheriffs office this week warned citizens to beware of fraudulent termite exterminators. Two women in McCracken were recently bilked out of a total of $1,000.
A new record enrollment at Fort Hays State College has 2,865. Students have come from 78 counties in Kansas, 19 other states and 11 students have enrolled from 8 foreign countries.
November 1980
Msgr. Patrick J. Leahy will be the new pastor at St. Marys parish and Father Rory ONeill will be assigned to Medicine Lodge and Kiowa as of November 13.
