Vara Hall LaFoy has donated a framed drawing of two horses and cottonwood trees (horses at Tony Harp's, trees on Stremel's) to McCracken Public Library. Vara has previously donated other historical family paintings to the library. She recently published a book about her foster brother, Wayne Sieling. Wayne and his twin Wendell were born to Cannie Veda Davidson and Roy Sieling. Veda died the day after their birth. After six years his father and grandparents couldn't take care of them, so they came from Chicago on the train to Great Bend and moved to a farm near Albert, Kansas to be raised by his mother's sister, Blanche (Davidson) and her husband, Lott Hall. The Halls had three children Vara, Jean and Melba. Wayne joined the service and was sent to the Philippines prior to the war. The Japanese hit the Philippines after bombing Pearl Harbor. He was assigned to Bataan and was captured by the Japanese and sent on the Bataan Death March. When they reach the end of the march, most of the men who hadn't died, had malaria. Wayne died at the makeshift hospital of malaria on May 28, 1942 (Pfc 3l Inf Reg). He is buried in the Manila American Cemetery in Manila - his grave marked with a white cross. Vara visited the gravesite on November 7, 1969. The book "Remember Me Wayne Seiling", a tribute by Vara, is at the McCracken library. Everyone should read this book --- it is a true example of man's inhumanity to man and the spirit of one man. Please remember Wayne Sieling and all our war dead. Please honor all servicemen and women on November 11, Veterans Day.
