Dave and Carolyn Davenport, Shirley Bundy, Art Behrman, Lenora Stremel, Hutchinson, Ty Elias, Tina and Quintin Harris, McCracken attended the wedding of Kathleen Stremel and Paul Thomas in Leawood this past week-end.
The Cain Apple orchard east of Claflin had some wonderful apples and pumpkins this year. Please check it out. It is approximately 2-3 miles east and ? mile north of Claflin. There is a big Apple sign on the left of the highway.
Those who helped checking names and dates at the cemetery this week were Jean Schutte, Janice Stull, Joyce and Larry Eisenhour, Franklin Littler and Dwight Eisenhour.
Teresa Lovitt and her Dodge City High School freshman volley ball team were undefeated this year.
Since the Golden Agers charge the library for the use of their facility, anyone wishing to give a donation to defray this expense, please give the money to Ruth at the library. The library purchases all the refreshments. Please note the annual Halloween Spook Parade will be held Saturday, October 25. Please gather in front of the McCracken Library at 4:00 p.m. The party will be held at the Senior Center following the parade.
Chuck Higgins attended the Hutch Trinity 8th grade football game held in Sedgwick Thursday evening, with Trinity winning 21-8. Both teams were undefeated. Tanner Higgins intercepted two passes in the game, the first one in the first quarter and the second in the fourth. Trinity won the league with this win.
Pam Blue, Archie Helzer, Katy and Tex, Kansas City, Mo. (brother & sister) stopped by Roy and Phyllis Conrad on Thursday. They were looking for the graves of their aunt and uncle, Stuart & Marie C. (Ross) Martin who are buried in St. Mary's Cemetery. Marie also has a connection to all the Hearity's buried at the cemetery.
Wednesday the 15th, Vickie Sanderfur and Riley, Enid, OK visited her sister Kathy Bracken and Hayden in LaCrosse. Jeannie Elias spent Thursday night in LaCrosse with her family. Friday, Riley, Hayden and Nikki spent Friday night and Saturday in Ransom with their Steve Phelps. Kathy spent Friday night in McCracken with Dennis and Jeannie Elias. Dennis, Jeannie and Kathy met Travis, Tina and Katie Elias in Hays on Saturday and attended the football game of Tanner Elias at Lewis field. Ty, Tina and Quintin were come and go visitors of Dennis and Jeannie. Saturday they all had enjoyed lunch at the home of Kathy Bracken in LaCrosse
Lorraine Ryan accompanied her daughter Cathie Shapiro to Rochester, New York and attended the family weekend for her granddaughter, Lauren Shapiro. Lauren attends the Rochester Institute of Technology. They shopped for winter clothing for Lauren as a friend told her to expect 150 inches of snow this winter. They also toured the campus and dormitory. Lorraine said the scenery was beautiful.
Kathy Bracken is the new employee at the State Farm Office in LaCrosse. She replaces Sandy Irvin who is working for Farm Bureau also in LaCrosse.

Dave and Carolyn Davenport returned home this weekend from Roaring Rivers near Casseville, MO. On their way back they came through Commerce, Oklahoma and found the house where Mickey Mantle grew up in his younger years. The tin shed where his father and grandfather pitched to him at a very early age was still there as was the house. There was a plaque by the front door giving the history. The town of Commerce voted down to make the home a museum, so the only thing you could do was to look inside as it was like in 1938. They were glad to find it as it made Dave in a better mood as his fishing in Roaring Rivers wasn't anything to brag about.
A baby shower was held for Melissa Schuckman Thompson at the Farmers Bank & Trust basement on Saturday afternoon. Ellen & Addie Kershner, Cheryl Werth, Kari Groff & Audrey, Lisa Dey, Keldon & McKaylee, Stacy Scheetz, Hailye & Braydon, Addie Mills, Donna Schmidt, Debi Rogers, Jessica Dellett & Hannah, Ava North & girls. Grandpa House came for refreshments and to see his girls, grandkids & great grandkids
Walter and Janey Rogers motored to Lone Jack, Mo and visited with their daughter, Pete and Terri Cox. They also visited with Janeys sister, G.W. and Lois Thompson in Knob Noster, Mo. They traveled on to Kansas City where they were guests of Patrick and Betty Keener.
Bill and Sharon Lovitt returned home Sunday afternoon after a train ride trip to San Diego where they visited their daughter, Jeff and Kathy Hurd, Eric, Audra and Austin. Eric is 62, 180 lb. junior at Mt. Carmel High School with an enrollment of 2,500 students. He is the starting wide receiver for Mt. Carmel.
I ALWAYS enjoy stories told to me by Walter Rogers, about growing up around Hampton. He said he remembered one Halloween when he wasnt very old, everyone dressed up and there was one extra adult lady that they didnt know. When it was time to take off the costumes it was Ross Baldwin. Loreen McCaskey died October 17 at her home in Hutchinson. She was born October 3, 1920 in McCracken the daughter of Rufus and May Foster Schutte. She married Ben S. McCaskey April 9, 1939 in McCracken. He died February 8, 2006. Survivors are a son Benny McCaskey, two daughters, Geraldine Brown and Sharon Eisler. Cremation has taken place.
A short rodeo meeting was held Monday evening at the McCracken City Building.
Those attending were Bet, Colleen, Gary, Bill, Roger & Brenda, Shirley, Mark and Barbara Rupp. Barbara is the new queen co-ordinator replacing Gina Riedel. She has some great ideas and lots of enthusiasm. The rodeo still has several rodeo caps for sale; they are $15.00. There is also an assortment of sizes and colors of rodeo shirts. The rains have extended our growing season. The grass is amazingly green, roses are still blooming and some even have iris blooming. The countryside is beautiful with the colors of the fall crops and the growing wheat.
Gerald Crotinger has donated a set of school books that were used at McCracken Grade School to the Jail/Museum.
Jim Schafer will have his pacemaker-defibulator replaced next Monday. He recently had a heart cath and a stent.
Up-date on Rush County United Fund: Tomi Rues, our chairman for McCracken, is very proud of our little town and that our community continues to support this important fund drive. If you have not yet given to this cause, please send your form to Tomi and drop it off at the Library.
The areas around the Barnard bell and the Nichol cemetery have been nicely mowed. Our thanks to those who did the work.
Sharon Irvin saw a yellow wagon pulled by a mule named Polly on Highway 4 on Friday. The rig is owned by Bernie Harbert who is traveling from Canada to Mexico. Check out his website riverearth.com.

Ashley McGaughey received her pin at the Pinning Ceremony from Brown Mackie College, Nursing Department, on Saturday, October 11, 2008 at the Salina Bicentennial Center, Heritage Hall. Those attending were Rob, Helena and Austin McGaughey, Joy Hunter, Aaron, Lesley and Lillian McGaughey, Terry and Helen Showalter, John Showalter, Richard Showalter, Inez Manos, Claudine & Joe Bono, Lindsey and Eric and Cadace, friends of Ashley. They went to Chili's for supper following the reception.
Ron and Ruth Crawshaw were in Fredonia last weekend for Ruth's 40th class reunion. She and her classmates rode in the Homecoming Parade. Ron celebrated his 45th class reunion. They also visited with Ted and Bernadine Gray, Ruth's parents.
Those attending the Encore Series presentation, Golden Dragons, at Beach-Schmidt Performing Arts Center, Fort Hays State University. on Monday evening were Francis and Julia Zeller, John and Melanie Zeller, William Zeller, John and Sharon Irvin. October 1908
August Marak was married to Miss Katherine McCormick at St. Marys Church Wednesday morning. A wedding dinner was given at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Alex McCormick. They will make their home in Ness County.
October 1938
Guy Ryan, 52, died at his home Wednesday afternoon. He is survived by his wife, Alta, a daughter Laytha, a son Basil and a brother Harley D. Ryan. Pall bearers were B. M. Skaggs, William Ryan, Gayle Ryan, Audice Thompson, Ralph Thompson, Glenn Ryan, M. J. Ryan and M. M. Stephens. Burial was in the McCracken Cemetery.
October 1948
Oldest men attending the Rush County Old Settlers Association meeting at Rush Center were Lon Irvin, 95, John Irvin, 88 and Howard R. Barnes 86. Mrs. Abbie Brackney of McCracken told of having served as postmistress at Hampton, a post office on the Fort Hays-Fort Dodge Trail.
Those home from Manhattan to spend the weekend with their relatives were Miss Dorothy Elmore, Miss Joan Ryan, Miss Phyllis Cheney, John Elmore, Gerald Walker and Ronald Hinman.
Mrs. Richard Ryan entertained at a birthday dinner Monday evening for her daughter Patricia. The following girls were present: Carla Rodeman, Reva Rodeman, Marlene Wilson and Arlene Wilson.
