The Jail/Museum has received a new postcard through E-Bay and Suzanne Randa that was sent by Earle Fletcher, Operator of a ham radio W9WRS sent to Radiofone W9SRR in Spencer Iowa on September 22, 1931. Enclosed with his card were two other cards - one from Clair Howard of Toledo, Ohio using call letter N8BKZ and EC5CC from Alicante, Spain.
It is always nice to visit with Howard Yost at his booth in the Mall in Hays. He reads the Rush County News from cover to cover.
Our thanks to Ali Ault who did a lot of work cleaning up around the Jail/Museum. She is a member of the Beautification Committee.
We were distressed to see the vandalism to one of the benches at the Museum. The back of the cast iron bench placed there by the Beautification Committee was broken off.
Our sympathy to the family of Maurine Settles Walker, 95, who died September 5, 2012 at St. John. She was born March 6, 1917 to Emmett and Bessie Settles in Healy. She is survived by sons, Maurice and his wife Carole Higgins and Steve and his wife Cheryl Higgins of Sarasota, Fla.; and a stepson, Jim and his wife Robby Walker of Topeka. She had 15 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and 23 great-great-grandchildren. Services were at Minnis Funera.l Chapel and burial was in the Fairview Park Cemetery, St. John.

Our sympathy to the family of Leona M. Huschka Klein, 90, who died September 16, 2012. She was born March 21, 1922. She married Lawrence F. Klein on June 27, 1945. She is survived by a son, Father Pascal Klein of LaCrosse; a daughter, Simone Klein, a brother, Martin Huschka, a sister, Evelyn Behr and three grandchildren.
Wheat cleaning has begun. There are trucks lined up on three sides of the City Park waiting to have the wheat cleaned. Now to get some moisture.

Mike, Susan and Shannon Keith and Carolyn Thompson attended the 20th anniversary celebration at the Brookville Hotel in Abilene on Sunday in honor of Frederick "Ot" and Louise Otero of McPherson. On Saturday they attended the football game at K-State vs North Texas State. It was band day and Ellsworth participated with the K-State Marching Band and other bands across the state during halftime. They showed pictures of the Ellsworth band on the Jumbo Tron in the stadium.

Erica Gilbert entered her grandma Shirleys gingersnap cookies in the Rush County Fair this August and received a purple ribbon and Reserve Champion for the cookies. She entered the same cookies in the State Fair and won a purple ribbon there also. Erica and 6 of her class mates were inducted into the National Junior Honor Society at the LaCrosse Middle School. Congrats Erica!
Melanie Zeller and her daughter Sarah Urban joined her all her sisters, Lisa Gamber, Kathy Rossman and husband Verlyn, Hope Ney and Hope's daughter's Lindsey Ney and Cassandra Ochs at the Hillsboro Craft Fair. While at the craft fair they ran into Donna and Delvin Jay and had a nice visit. After the craft fair Melanie and Sarah traveled to Valley Center and visited with her sister Lisa Gamber and Lisa's sons Ethan and Eli Gamber. Melanie, Sarah and Lisa went to a movie, dinner and bowling that evening and spent the night. On Sunday Melanie, Sarah, and Lisa went to the" The Lion King" performance in Wichita at the Century II. After the show, Melanie and Sarah drove to Nickerson to visit friends Jack and Jan Piatt.
Saturday evening, September 15th, Bruce, Ellen, Clinton, Clayton and Addie Kershner hosted a birthday party for Grandpa Bob House. Joining the honored guest and hosts were Cheryl Werth and Audrey, Lisa & McKaylee Day, Bruce, Susan, Melissa and baby Mia Davis, Donnie Schuckman, Stacy & Braydon Scheetz, Melissa, Davis and baby Madolyn Thompson, Aunt Addie Mills and Mike. They had a fun evening and enjoyed seeing the "babies" and their families. By the way, Grandpa is 82 years "young"
Alice Metz Cundliffe, Wanham, Alberta, Canada, Debbie Bohnke, Red Deer, Alberta and Lionel and Elizabeth Chailler, Felher, Alberta was in McCracken from September 11-17 working on genealogy of the Metz, Darkes, Joseph and Murphy families. They are descendants of the John Metz family who moved to Alberta to homestead. The Metz farm was northeast of McCracken where Orville Durand farmed. They stayed at the farm home of Jeff and Anita (Funk) Butler (The Darkes homestead).
They are descended from Jared and Lavina Metz who are buried at Hampton.
In McCracken they found family information at McCracken Public Library and the Jail/Museum. Phyllis Conrad provided genealogy on the Joseph and Murphy families.
They toured the sites in the area, the museums in LaCrosse, Old Fort Hays, Fort Larned, Dodge City and Hampton.
They were hosted by relatives, Arlene Gilbert and Marlene Funk.
It was a privilege for Shirley, Phyllis and Carolyn to share what is available in McCracken about their families.
Tanner Higgins, a senior of Hutchinson High School, was named a Kansas Honor Scholar ranking in the top 10% of his senior class.
Shirley Higgins spent the weekend in Hutchinson and attended the football game Friday night and an all day volleyball tournament in Maize on Saturday. The football team was beaten by Rockhurst in a wild 4th quarter finish, the volleyball team played 6 games with eleven teams participating.
Rich and Mary Lou Higgins were guests of his parents Wilfrid and Twila Higgins over the week-end. Joining them were Mike and Nancy Wiebe who planned on staying until Wednesday.
A snake was seen crawling across the street headed north at the end of West Beech. It seemed like it knew where home was located.
McCracken Sport News: 1950-51
McCracken highs sixball team completed its six game schedule without a loss here Wednesday afternoon, defeating Arnold 50 20 in the final game of the season. Four seniors were outstanding for McCracken. Jack Wilson played a bang-up game at end; Floyd Thompson, halfback, tallied five touchdowns on long end sweeps; Bob Fear ran 65 yards for a touchdown and Richard Buxton tossed a touchdown pass to Richard Gordon and came close to a score when he moved the ball to the one-foot line on the last play of the game after a pass from Fear. McCracken led 33-6 at the half. Two players, LeeRoy Schuckman and LeRoy Gilbert saw no action in the final game because of injuries. In previous games this year, McCracken tied Hanston 0-0, defeated Arnold 31-13, Ransom 33-0, Bison 46-0 and Hanston 34-20.
1971
The McCracken Mustangs defeated the Lewis Spartans 14-12 last Friday night to bring their record to 5 wins and 3 losses for the season. In the first quarter Steve Sloan passed to John Elmore for 33 yards and a TD. Sloan passed to Elmore again for the extra point conversion. McCracken was unable to score in the 2nd quarter. Lewis recovered a fumble for the first TD and was unable to score the extra point. Then they intercepted a Sloan pass for a TD and again were unable to score the PAT. The half-time score was 8-12. Each side was unable to score in the 3rd quarter. In the first play of the 4th quarter Sloan went over for a TD after a 36 yard pass from Sloan to Wendler. The PAT failed. Coach McKinney praised Greg Buster for playing an exceptional defensive game and commented that freshman Gary Schuckman played defensively like he was an experienced senior. Craig Wendler was the leading ground gainer for McCracken with 87 yards. The final game of the season will be Thursday night at Healy.
