The KPRA finals will be held on September 19th, 20th and 21st in Scott City, Kansas.
Saturday is committee appreciation night and plaques will be presented to the “Rodeo of the Year” and “Committee of the Year”.  Everyone is invited to attend this fun filled weekend sponsored by the KPRA.
 
Phyllis Higgins and Sarena Higgins returned home recently after visiting with Ron, Sabrina and Sam Hurt in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  They had a very nice trip.
 
Gary English of Yakima, Washington, called this week wondering when our McCracken Museum was open.  Our answer was anytime you can find someone at home with a key!!  He remembered one time when Jack Edwards was marshal, he and Perry J. Irvin were visiting with him when Jack asked if they had ever been inside the cells.  Their answer was no so they went inside, locked the door and went to eat dinner. 
 
Babe Gilbert told me that he was the third player, not Charlie Jacobs that played in the basketball game against Bison when McCracken only had three players on the gym.  He said Jones of Bison took a shot, missed and Babe grabbed the rebound, winning the game. Thanks Babe!
 
Labor Day week-end guests of Gladys & Wendell Hinman were Ellen & Larry Hinman, Cheryl & Sarah, Lenexa, Ks.
 
The Hoisington Cardinals lost their opening game to Holcomb 25-0 on Friday evening. Grandson Zach Higgins is a member of the team.  They play Nickerson at Nickerson the 12th.
 
Tony and Tomi Rues and kids went to the Jarvis Theatre in Ness City Saturday night. The movie Wall-e was playing. The Theatre is open from September to May and always has great movies. The movies run Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 8:00.  How nice to have a little and inexpensive theatre so close by. A fun time was had by all.
 
Bev and Vida Irvin celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary with their ‘kids’ Gerald & Linda Bittel, Reggie & Brenda Irvin with a luncheon at Applebee’s in Hays on Saturday.
 
Marge Sloan, Ponca City, Oklahoma, was a guest of her daughter, Roger & Norma McNair from Wednesday – Saturday.
 
Grant and Jodene Helmer, Augusta, stopped in McCracken on Sunday on their way home from Scottsdale, Arizona. 
 
Those helping with the cemetery directory project Sunday afternoon were Janice Stull, Jean Schutte, Carolyn Thompson, Norma McNair, Shirley Higgins, Arlyn & Jan North, Larry & Joyce Eisenhour & ‘Goop” Eisenhour.
 
McCracken ended another great season of golf playing and tournaments with the His & Hers tournament this past Sunday. There were 10 golfers with a pot luck dinner. Pat Derr had the longest putt, Norma McNair longest drive for the ladies; Roger McNair longest drive for the men. Diz Washaliski had the best score and Bet McCormick the lowest score. They all had a great time and lots of fun. It is always fun with the McCracken golf club and we invite anyone interested in trying to learn and just play for fun and games to join us. We had 8 new members this year.  The committee wants to thank everyone for their help in keeping the golf course in tip top shape. THANK YOU ALL!!!!!!
 
Lonnie & Tammy Irvin, Zach Higgins, Darin Poland & Tanner Higgins attended the Garden City Juco – Butler County Juco football game Saturday evening in Garden City.  Butler won 34-29.  Cameron Horesky is a starter for the team.  He had 15 receptions for 151 yards.  Zac Stetler is the punter for Butler County.

Francis and Roberta Wierman spent Labor Day weekend with Marilyn and George Sommers, Silver Lake.  Saturday they went to Garnett to visit Dean and Bernice Kittle and family.  Sunday guests were Rita Brethour, Greensboro, North Carolina; Shane, Jill, Ivan and Tessa Brethour, Olathe; Ray and Laura Wiermen, Bennington; Cindy Wierman, Olathe.
 
Rob McGaughey had another stint put in on Friday morning.
 
Father Kenny called to say he enjoyed seeing all his friends in the Tri-Parish-Directory.
 
Carolyn Thompson attended her class of 1956 and her 70th birthday party over the weekend in Great Bend.  Her class will get together again next September.
 
Gary Barnes and Colleen Kerns attended the Labor Day parade in Brownell last Monday.  Sorry we missed them.  They attended the State Fair Sunday.  They wore their McCracken Rodeo shirts and were stopped and asked about the rodeo.  After leaving the grounds they stopped at McDonald’s where they saw Bob Rhoades.  He asked about everyone he could thing of in McCracken and said to tell everyone hello.
 
Lexie Barnes participated in the pedal pull Sunday at the State fair.  She placed in the top 10 but most of all she had fun.
 
McCracken History Notes
September 1908
The death of Ezra Thompson, which was due to being kicked by a colt, was reported here Monday evening.  He was binding corn at the time and the animal struck him in the back.  He leaves two brothers, Alfred Thompson, north of Brownell and Ed Thompson, north of McCracken.  A wife and five children are mourning his loss.
 
Joseph Schoenberger, Jr., Liebenthal, is a candidate for sheriff on the Democratic ticket.
 
September 1938
Mrs. Martha Plotner is working at the Whitehead Grill this week during the absence of LaVon Casey.
 
Wheat drills are starting throughout this region in conditions declared by experts as the best since 1930.
 
Helen Irvin and Bard Stephens are enrolled at Fort Hays; Ruth Moran at Washburn College; Marjorie Norlin at Kansas State and Elmore Ryan and Lucille Elmore at Kansas University.
 
September 1948
Marilyn Hunt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L.L. Hunt, Alexander, is leaving Sunday for Columbia, Missouri where she will attend Stephens College.  Young people from McCracken attending college are:  Bennie Thompson, Dorothy Elmore, Joan Ryan, Phyllis Cheney, Richard Shiney, Ronald Hinman and John Elmore at Kansas State College; Orville Wahl, Glenn and Guy Conner and Norman Baldwin at Fort Hays State; Billy Joe Moran at St. Joseph’s Academy, Hays; Teresa and Reita Moran, Mount St. Scholastica College, Atchison; Scotty Shiney is continuing his work as a senior at Missouri University, Columbia, Missouri.  Clyde Hinman will leave next week to enter the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago.
 
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Edward Thompson, Wichita, a girl September 12.  Born to Mr. and Mrs. Albert North, September 8, a son at St. Anthony’s hospital in Hays.  Born to Mr. and Mrs. Francis Klee of Wichita a girl, September 4.

 County students on Fort Hays Dean’s honor roll:  Charles Auston, Wilma Baus, James Pivonka, Wayne Irvin, Patricia Ryan, Dight House and Lon Wells.
 
Norma Jean Peters and Betty Nowles left Dodge City Wednesday on a trip to the Hawaiian Island.  They will go by plane and return home by boat.

The South 50-6 League elected new officers Thursday, September 12.  LeeRoy Schuckman is president and Glenn Conner is secretary.

Airman Stacy L. Brackney has graduated from Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.
 
Fannie Lovitt Davenport recently became Rush County’s oldest resident.  On Monday September 12, Fannie celebrated her 102nd birthday at Rush County Hospital LTC.
 
September 1998
Dolores Petz underwent back surgery at Halstead hospital.
 
John Zeller received bites to his upper right leg from a pit bull at the McCracken City Park.
