Mass will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Sunday, September 8 at noon in honor of the founding of St. Mary's. It is the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Father Matthew Kumi will preside.
Larry Eisenhour has loaned his re-furbished McCracken High School class ring to the Jail/Museum. Larry is a member of the Class of 1957. He wore his ring and it became worn. Jostens pledged they would re-furbish any class rings that became worn, so Larry had them do that. It looks brand new. It has a blue stone with a gold shield and an M on the stone. Larry and Joyce Eisenhour are dedicated to keeping the directory at the McCracken City Cemetery current. Three new sheets were added to the directory on Wednesday.
Our sympathy to the family of Vivian Washaliski Simmons, age 85, who died September 25 in Dodge City. Vivian is a descendant of Ness County pioneers, the daughter of Malcolm Max and Loretta Higgins Washaliski. She was born May 28, 1928, in rural Ness County southwest of McCracken on the family farm. She was a 1945 graduate of Bazine High School and worked for Southwestern Bell until her retirement after 34 years of service She was a generous supporter of the Jail/Museum in McCracken. She is survived by brothers. Skip and Diz Washaliski and sister Marietta Kirk. Burial will be at Fairlawn Cemetery in Hutchinson on September 7 at 2:00 p.m.
Our sympathy to the family of Jean Moran, age 87, Shawnee, who died September 28. Jean was a descendant of Rush County pioneers, the daughter of William and Rosa Marak Moran. She was born June 30, 1926 in Hargrave. Burial was in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, McCracken, on August 31, 2013. Her expertise in math led her to an extra job making sure math text books were accurate. She was a member of the Order of St. Benedict taking the name Sister Finnian. Her degrees were from Mount St. Scholastica in 1948 and her Master's from Notre Dame University in 1958. She is survived by her sister, Rita Pumilia, brother in law, Eugene Wendling and sister in law, Marge Moran, 21 nieces and nephews.

Addie Mills was a Wednesday evening supper guest of Norbert and Teresa Karlin and Mike at Thirsty's in Hays. Mike accompanied his grandmother home to McCracken where he will spend the next eight days while his parents attend a family reunion in Vail, Colorado.
The trucks are lined up around the City Park as wheat is being cleaned at the elevator. Drilling will begin when we get some rain. West of McCracken the pastures are fading and the feed and milo show damage from the lack of rain and hot weather.
What a delightful evening was enjoyed by all at Barnard Library in LaCrosse on Thursday evening. We were mesmerized by the re-enactments of Kate Coffee, Dr. Baker and Howard Barnard on the occasion of his 150th birthday. The months of the year quilt displayed above the desk is truly a work of art. Our thanks to the artist for her presentation.

Reno county schools have started their volleyball season. Two of Hutch Trinity players are 6 footer senior Emily Dechant, a middle and outside hitter. Last year she had 216 kills and 158 blocks. Junior Konner Brening was an all-league player last year with 217 assists. They are the daughters of Brian and Jyl Dechant and Kevin and Pat Brening. Jenna Higgins, a junior for Hutch High School is a setter. She is the daughter of Jerry and Jodi Higgins. Year two of the Johnson era begins Saturday when Hutch hosts the 14-team AVCTL pre season meet at the Salt hawk Activity Center. Nicole Tacha is a junior at Springfield Catholic High School playing volleyball for the Fighting Irish. She is the daughter of Kayla Weskamp and the late John Tacha. Their first game is Tuesday, September 3. Shannon Keith is a junior at Ellsworth. Their season starts Tuesday, September 3 against Republic County at home. Ellsworth coach Amy Johnson is quoted as saying, I'm looking for Keith to step in for a bigger role this season. Courtney and Erica Gilbert, daughters of Brett and Holly Gilbert, will play for LaCrosse beginning their season on Friday, August 30, against Victoria at home. Stephanie Greenway, daughter of Bill and Paula Greenway will be a junior at Ellis High School. Her first match for Ellis will be September 10 at Ellis. Please support all these student athletes whenever you can. It is first class entertainment for the fans.

Shirley Higgins attended the all-day volleyball tournament in Hutchinson on Saturday. She spent Sunday and Monday in Russell with Tammy, John, Cameron and Courtney.

Mrs. Betty Moses & children moved to Bogue where she will teach music in the Bogue School.
Mrs. Larry Eisenhour will teach music at the Ransom school this year.
A marriage license was issued to Harold Vergene Herdman and Janet Sue Lyda.
Alvin A. Maddy, 70, died September 14 in Abilene. He taught school in Ransom, Utica, Beverly and 9 years in McCracken.
Mr. & Mrs. Richard Ryan will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary on Sunday.
McCracken school band consisting of 31 members participated in band day at the Hutchinson Fair. The band is under the direction of Arlene Gilbert.
Melissa House is teaching this year at the Lyons Grade School.
Mrs. Marilyn (Conrad) Hopper was honored with a bridal shower on Friday.
Total rainfall in McCracken during the weekend was 3.35 inches.
MHS 6 man football will be coached by Glenn Conner. Players Elmer Baus, Ernie Gaschler, Steven Anderson, Dennis Peters, Tony Harp, Jim Muller, Ronnie Rein, Doug & Jim Higgins, Mike & Terry Peters and Jim Brown.
