Guests of Ben Thompson and Carolyn Thompson on Wednesday, August 17, were Barbara Montonye, Castleton, and Esther of Cleveland, Ohio. The ladies toured the Ness County area and visited the museum to have their picture taken with the Paper Moon. They enjoyed their stay at McCracken Inn. They were on way to Colorado to visit Barbara's aunt Carmen. Friday they drove Poudre Canyon west of Fort Collins.

Al and Judy Hugh have a new “baby” in the house - it is a chocolate colored Vizsla puppy, named Kassie. The floors are covered with toys and items she has found.

If you are out driving around, go by the home of Diz and Wilma's and enjoy their flower and shrubbery gardens. Wilma is a wiz at “exterior decorating”. I call it art! Of course, we give the credit to the rains God provided us with this summer.

The Lane County Historical Museum provided us with a copy of the McCracken Band picture from 1925 that was in the Hutchinson News.

Barton County Arts Council is presenting its 1st Annual Friends and Acquaintances Community Art Festival featuring artists at large. It will be held September 2 – October 7 at the Shafer art gallery.

The McCracken Golf Club appreciates the generous donation from the MHS Alumni that will go toward the new mower. The club’s mission is to make the course the best small town volunteer golf course in Kansas!!!

Tuesday the 16th Richard, John Evans, Johnny Mac & Riann drive to Knoxville, IA and one of their first stops they ate at Toot Toot’s, a buffet; Wednesday was to Hi Vee’s for their donuts; Wednesday went to the race track at Knoxville and they ate at the race track; Thursday morning they motored to Pleasantville, IA where Johnny Mac and Richard played a 9 hole golf course, they went back Knoxville where they picked up John Evans and Riann, they ate at Goldie’s in Prairie City where they enjoyed their specialty, 1 1/2lb tenderloins then attended the races, John and Riann went to Slide Aways; Friday they went to Williamsville where they had hamburgers as big as a dinner plate with fries then attended the races; Saturday they got up and had BBQ at their friend Eric’s house, (27 attended); Sunday night John, Johnny Mac, Riann and Richard attended the Iowa State Fair where they saw Allen and Donna Hill, Bill Greenway, Stephanie and her friend. They ate at Jethro’s BB in Des Moines; Monday they drove home. It is a yearly ‘get-away’ for the fellas.

Shelli Swanson, C.M. was recognized by the Salina Airport Authority board of directors for her 20 years of service as Director of Administration and Finance. By a unanimous vote the board members approved a resolution citing Shelli's achievements. Shelli currently serves on the Kansas Department of Transportation's Aviation Advisory Committee and was an integral part of the support team for the world record setting Steve Fossett in the Virgin Atlantic Global Flyer. Shelli is the daughter of Ben and Janette Rogers.

Ryan Higgins (age 5), son of Joe and Cyndi Higgins, Lenexa, Ks started Kindergarten at Blue Jacket-Flint Elementary School in Shawnee, Ks last week. Joe is the son of Mary and Martin Higgins.

1979 History Notes:

The grade school music festival was held in LaCrosse. Those attending were Sandy Taylor, Kayla Higgins, Rhonda Conrad, Janet Conner, Laura North, Stacy Forman, Susan Thompson, Greta Dome and Dixie Bott. MHS Track meet held in McCracken had the following winners: Kerri Seltman, Kelly McKinney, Craig Stull, Shannon McKinney, Freddie Taylor and Kevin Rourke. Other members are Dale Elias, Wade Hinman, Phil Swindler, Larry Hinman, Joe Conner, Chris Jones. This was the first time in history that the track teams captured the league title in basketball, football and track. The McCracken pool will open with Gina McCall as pool director. Richard Conrad is in St. Louis attending an eight week course with the Aero-Space agency. Cookie League members are: Kevin Casey, Jeff Scheuerman, Jay Brack, Doug Elias, Richard Wittman, Les Deimer, Mike Stull, Terry Showalter, Gary Barnes, Shawn McKinney, Ted Bannister, Chris Casey and Kris Bromlow. 480 acres of Rush County land brought $735.00 an acre. Brownell American Legion breezed past Grainfield 12-2 in the Plainville Invitational Tournament. They continued their winning ways by pounding Norton 10-2, squeezed past Plainville 7-6 to capture first place. Jeff McCormick picked up his second win. Kellye Irvin was named MVP with Joe Conner, Jerry Casey and Kellye making the all-tournament team. State Farm Insurance slo-pitch softball team members are Lonnie Irvin, Roger Dreiling, Les Rogers, Rodney Taylor, Mike Conner, Jim Rein, Ronnie Randa, Steve Foreman, Chuck & Jerry Higgins, Dave Davenport and Doug Higgins. They were league winners.
