One of the popular events at rodeo each year is the Trail Ride.  Lynn Kochenower led the group this year.  The ride began and ended at the rodeo arena.    A breakfast was served at the arena before the ride began.  Most of the ride was made on CRP ground, pastures and under bridges so that there was limited time on roads.  Everyone had a great time. There were approximately 25 riders.  Thanks to Dave Derr,  Roger Legleiter and John Irivn for letting them ride on their property. The group left the rodeo grounds at 10:00 a.m. and spent  two hours on the trail.  They saw deer and got to ride under a railroad threstle.  Tentatively next year they will start at Lynn's house east of McCracken.  John Ficken will be in charge of the ride in 2013 and will become the permanent contact person - thanks John.  They found that Saturdays worked much better. If anyone comes across a picture, it will be used in next year's rodeo booklet.

Sheila Brown has returned to Wichita State to continue her education in Criminal Justice.  Haily Gilbert is attending Fort Hays State and Tayler Stull is attending Bethany.

The oil well being drilled southwest of McCracken is a horizontal one that will be fracked.  There are lots of semi-water trucks hauling water constantly.   When you come into town at night it looks like there is a small city over southwest.  So I took a drive out to see it and was amazed at the amount of equipment used in drilling one of these wells.  It is worth your time to check it out.  You can also go online to see a video that shows this process.

Betty Fear has donated a dress that Lucille Elias wore as a child to the museum.

McCracken Sports News 1972

McCracken’s Cookie League and PeeWee Baseball Teams were entertained at an ice cream social Tuesday at the McCracken Hotel. Cake and punch were also served. Thirty five boys attended. The cake, prepared by the LaCrosse bakery, was four feet long and 2 ? feet wide. After the social, the boys cut the cake and delivered pieces to people in town that helped out with the summer’s activities. “Most Valuable Player Award” for Cookie League Player was given to Daryl Casey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Pat Casey. Chuck Higgins, son of Mr. and Mrs. Vic Higgins was presented the “Most Valuable Player Award” for PeeWee League. “Most Improved Player Award” was given to Fritz Foster, son of Mr. and Mrs. Doyle ‘Freddie’ Foster. The cake and ice cream was provided by Jim Schafer, manager, who stated that if the players would get to 100 wins total by the end of the year he would buy a large cake. This year the boys have won 32 games and lost 4, to date this year for an overall total in the past five years of 107 wins and 29 losses. Contrary to some manager’s beliefs that McCracken ‘never loses at home’ is the fact that 3 of the 4 losses have been at McCracken.
