Dave and Carolyn Davenport spoke with Mike and Lydia Quigg, Mercedes, Texas last week and are cleaning up after the hurricane. They lost a lot of trees and Mike told us he would be spending his vacation putting on a new roof on his house. Mike is approaching retirement and has promised a trip to McCracken soon (maybe next year at the rodeo).
Last week-end Dave and Carolyn Davenport stopped for a short visit to see Tina and Quintin Harris. They were on their way to Colby for a trip to Denver with Travis, Tina, Katie, and Tanner Elias. Tanner had attended football camp and had a scrimmage game before they left.
Congratulations to Teresa and Kerry Lacock on the birth of a new baby boy, Kelton Thomas, born August 1, 2008. He weighed 7 lb 8 oz and is 19? inches long. Materal grandparents are Linda and Bob Gentry, Rossville, KS; paternal grandparents are Tom and Lois Lacock, Rossville. A brother Krew and sister Keera welcome him home. Kerry is the principal of Ransom High School; Teresa is a teacher at Bazine.

Congratulations to Allen and Bailey Morgan on the birth of a new baby boy, Carter Layne, born August 9, 2008. His big brother, Caden, welcomes him home.
Nancy and Richard Baker, Manhattan, Kansas, were weekend guests at the McCracken home of Les and Rose Diehl. Saturday noon they hosted a dinner for the Bakers, Roger and Norma McNair; Arky and Diana McNair; Charlotte Ochs; John and Melanie Zeller; Tony Rues; Emma, Kate and Will; Ron and Cathy Casey, Alex, Catherine and John; Arline Rues; Thayne and Machree Jones and Austin McGaughey. A turkey dinner with all the fixins was served. A good time was had by all!
The golf tournament held in McCracken Sunday, August 16 was won by Sean Peters in the 1st flight, Roger McNair in the 2nd. Others joining them were two Mitchs Keeley, Mitch Conner Dale Snyder, Joe Gabel, Bob Fear, Bet McCormick, Arky McNair, Roger McNair, George ?, Todd Basgall, Tony Harp & Sean Peters.
Lucy Vogle donated a crocheted miniature cup made by her mother, Mary Higgins, to the Jail/Museum. Also donated is a Citizens State Bank check written by G. Greenwald to Ray Roughton on April 14, 1923 for $1.85. It was deposited by Mr. Roughton in the Bank of McCracken. It was donated by Joe Higgins, son of Martin and Mary Higgins. He found it on E-Bay.
Renewing members of the museum are Martin and Mary Higgins, David and Kay Bisagno Bleakley, Matthew Bleakley and Erin Bleakley, John and Sharon Irvin and Linda Parker Jennings.
You should check out the cute foal that was born to Robs grey mare on Thursday. It is a MULE. So cute.
Have you seen half grown wild turkeys? There were five with their mother west of town on Thursday. What do you call a baby turkey? Let us know.
Congratulations to Lora and Mark Bain on the birth of their new granddaughter, August 5 at Hays Medical Center. She has been named Jaelynn. Her parents are Ashley and Landon Harper. Lora is our former postmaster.

How beautiful the cemetery, park and city buildings look after they were mowed. Our thanks to all those who were involved.
Arlyn and Jan North went to Arlington,Texas and joined Ronn, Laura, Sarah and Aiden Martin on a trip to Marco Island, Florida for R and R from Sat to Wednesday then returned to Arlington.

LaCrosse Chieftain: Fairview Township is away to the front on wheat this year. David Albright threshed some that made thirty-eight bushels; J. C. Littler and his son, Frank, will have about 12,000 bushels and lots of that is yielding about thirty-five. It pays to farm in Rush County.

Lloyd Conner is building a new tin machine shed at his farm.

Mrs. J. E. Elmore and Miss Loa Anderson went to Excelsior Springs, Mo., Thursday of last week where they will stay for some time.
Mr. and Mrs. Guy Chase and Mr. and Mrs. O. F. Ware of Arapahoe, Colo., came Sunday for a visit with McCracken relatives and friends.
Maurice Klee of Flint, Mich., and Miss Marcella Hermann, La Grange, Ill accompanied by Caroline and Patty Klee, left Tuesday for Brush, Colo., to visit Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Mills.

Jim Eisenhour, age 22, of LaCrosse, was killed in action in Vietnam on Sunday, August 18. His helicopter was shot down by automatic weapons fire while on a mission. (We honor Jim and all those from Rush and Ness Counties who have lost their lives in defense of our nation. Rest in Peace)

A Grumbein reunion was held Sunday at the roadside park in Alexander.
Trisha Zinn, who now lives in Smith Center, was designated as first runner-up at the Miss National Preteen Pageant in Greensboro, N. C.
August 1988
Charlene G. Brackney Boone, 52, died August 6, 1988. She was the daughter of Cecil Pete and Frances Jacobs Brackney. She married Harold W. Boone and they spent 17 years in Australia and Singapore. Burial was in the Blakley Cemetery, Madison, Kansas.

Maureen George is making a trip to Lewis each day. She is the acting postmaster until a new one can be named.
Kevin Anderson lives in the former Mildred Rein house.
Jerome Langdon and Marvin Rhodes visited McCracken and Hampton cemetery last Tuesday.
Troy Piper has moved into the Teresa Moran rental property. Mr. Piper is the new principal of McCracken Middle School.
