Jolly Waring District No 48 continued: The County Superintendent gave seventh and eighth grade examinations at the school. Other school students had to come here because it was centrally located in the area.
The teacher for 1914-1915 was Marion Ware. Some others after 1920 included Corilla Wilkens, Fayne Musselman, Josephine Collins, Artilla Huxol, Inez Temple, Mae Meehan and Ruth Johnson. Some of the students were the Dugans, Edna North, John Pfaff, Harley Irvin, Lester Irvin, Tom Barnes, Ruby North, Anna North, Sam Higgins, Leon Hammond and Gail Skinner.
Early-day pupils included: 1891-1892: Teacher, Howard Floyd, Pupils were Burt, Mary and Lenore Campbell, Lester, Avia, Opal and Lillie Davis, Guy and Carrie Downs, Lee, Clarence, Arthur and Manley Ensign, Elva, Walter and Lewis Linbloom, Ray St. John, Mabel Thompson, Agnes Foster (5 years old, attended two days). 1894-1895: Teacher, John Sunley, Pupils included Olive and Nora Ball, Neva, Grace and Flora Barnett, Ethel Franklin, Vivian Hopper, Ollie, John and Ray Louthian, Hettie Mylers and Sylvester Sutton. Another term in 1894-1895: Della Depp, teacher, new pupils included E. M. Farrington, W. G. Lauck and M. L. Sunley. 1895-1896: New pupils included Ruby Davis, Eddie Leighton, Leona and May St. John, Eva, Roy, Ray, Harry and Frank Reams, Atwell Ball, Cora Reams and Magell Tratt. The budget for that year totaled $280.95. 1897: Cora West, teacher. Knowlton Davis, five years old, Ruby, Eddie and Snead White: Teacher's salary $30.00. Total budget, $260.02. Pupils ages ranged in ages from five to twenty years old. 1897 - September 13 to October 8: Anna Weaver, teacher 20 days.
Teachers had to fill out a Teacher's Term Report listing all pupils, grades they were in, what subjects they were taught, how they progressed throughout the year, etc. and answered questions such as: Do you spend 15 minutes daily on drills in writing? Oral Lessons? First and second readers, 10 to 20 minutes daily? Do you decorate your room? The teacher could make remarks to the county superintendent on this report for things they taught, might need or feel important they tell the Co. Supt. (More next week).
Friday afternoon from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. there will be a 'Come and Go' meet and greet at the McCracken Library - coffee will be provided and you can bring your own snacks. This is an opportunity to meet the new McCracken United Methodist Minister, Janice Farrell. This is not just for the church but for the community as she would like to meet other people.
Renewing members of the Jail/Museum are Randy and Janell Ryan of Scott City. They gave a memorial donation in memory of John E. Ryan.
Coach Caleb Svaty, Mike, Susan and Shannon Keith and Carolyn Thompson left on Sunday for the National AAU Junior Olympics in Des Moines, Iowa. Shannon participated in the 17 and 18 year old discus. Fifty athletes competed in this category. Shannon came in 26th. The winner threw 144 feet. They also toured Des Moines - the Botanical Gardens, the State Capitol and the Papajohn Sculpture Park. On the way home they shopped at the new shopping center called Zona Rosa in Kansas City. If you haven't been there, it is an experience in itself with parks amid the myriad of stores.
Anita Funk Butler, director of Education at Rolling Hills Zoo and DS&O was featured in the County Living Lane/Scott magazine for August.
Carl and Velma Legleiter attended an Unrein reunion in Wichita at the Single Tree Convention last Saturday. Their daughter, Lynnette Buhr and granddaughter, Carla joined them at 10:30 a.m. and attended the polka mass at the convention. It was the first polka mass ever to be held in Wichita. A gentleman from Canada sang in the afternoon, which was wonderful. There were pictures, games, dances. A number of rooms were rented in Mulvane. Carl and Velma stayed there at the casino.
Suzannes yard in the SW part of town looks wonderful. It was mowed Friday.
Josh, Amanda, Ben, Toby and Jason Pierce, Dennis and Jamie Shell, Gary Stark, Samatha Stark, Breanne, Russ, Garrett, Matt and Carlos Hernandez, their cousin Isabelle, Kansas City, spent the week-end in McCracken and attended the Rush County Fair. The grandkids absolutely love it.....
The display Brad Penka had at the Rush County Fair Veterans of Rush County was wonderful. Brad will be hosting several scanning events over the next year in various locations throughout the county. The events will be posted in the Rush County News. If you did not get your veteran picture/pictures to Brad, they are doing it again for the 2015 Fair.
On Sunday, Mary Steitz and Patricia Petz attended mass in the Cathedral at Victoria and then had lunch with Trent and Angie Timson and their boys, Drake and Grant in Salina. Then they all attended the 8th birthday party for Morgan Foos in Salina. Morgan is the daughter of Jeremy and Lisa Foos of Goddard.
The Miller family reunion was held August 2, 2014 at the Golden Corral, Hays. Those in attendance included Fred (Linda Mills) Shirk, Wes (Peggy Mills) Bacon, Mildred Mills, Frank Mills, Addie Mills, Danny and Marilyn Mills, Marty and Tina Mills, Jim (Sharon Mills) Pogue, Arlene Mills and family, Leon Jennings and Gene Miller. A good time, good food was had by all.
Dont forget the Timken Volunteer Fire Department Old Fashioned picnic in the park, Saturday, August 9. Hamburgers, hot dogs will be served at 6:00 p.m. for a free will donation. Bring your lawn chair and enjoy music by the Off Duty Band.
Shirley Higgins attended a bridal shower for Courtney Moran, bride-elect of Cameron Horesky in Hoisington Sunday. Tammy Irvin, Jodi & Jenna Higgins and Kyra Horesky were also in attendance.
Marcella Cellie Klee, 90, died July 30, 2014 at her home on Council Grove City Lake, surrounded by her family. She was born on October 20, 1923 to Matt and Alice Hermann on a farm outside Downers Grove, Illinois. On November 26, 1949, she married Maurice Klee in Downers Grove. They lived in several cities in the Midwest including Lawrence, Kansas, Davenport and Burlington, Iowa, finally retiring at Council Grove. They were the parents of six children. Cellie is survived by her children, Patty (Tom Schmitt), Glenwood, Iowa; Michelle (Ken) Peregon, Kalamazo, Michigan; Jackie (Kevin) Colgan, Peoria, Illinois; Jay Klee, Council Grove; Nan (Gareth) Williams, Tallahassee, Florida and Kevin (Susan) Klee, St. Paul, Minnesota. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, one great-grandson, a brother Don Herman, sister Loretta Peteges, sister-in-law, Addie Mills, brother-in-law, Bob House. She was preceded in death by herhusband, Maurice, her parents and two sisters, Evelyn and Florence. Funeral services were Saturday, August 2nd at Council Grove. She was buried in Calvary Cemetery beside her husband of 60 plus years.
Addie Mills was a Friday visitor of her nieces and nephews at the former home of their parents, Maurice and Cellie at Council Grove City Lake.
Come to McCracken for the August 10th tournament, a 2 person scramble with a kicker. As an incentive to join the club, in addition to the cash prizes for flights, the Club is kicking in an additional cash prize for the lowest score by a team consisting of 2 MCC members. To qualify for the additional cash prize, both members must have paid their 2014 dues by the start of the tournament. All ties for all prizes will be broken by a scorecard playoff. The amount of the additional cash prize will depend on the number of golfers playing. 2014 dues are $100 for a family and $50 for a single membership. Lunch will be served after the tournament for a free will offering.
