Paulette (Healy) Thompson and Sam spent Friday night in Hays after visiting with friends following the McCracken rodeo/dance. They had a nice visit with Frances Janke before returning to McCracken for Saturday's rodeo events.
You just never know who you'll see at the McCracken rodeo!! The MHS Class of "77 met at the "big top" for lunch Saturday - those attending were: Sue (Skillet) Davis, Cordova, TN, her sister Cheryl Skillet, Selah, WA and her granddaughter Madison; Les Rogers and his wife Sheryl, and daughter Kelsee; Mike Conner and Deb Schuckman, McCracken, Diane McFarren, LaCrosse & Paulette (Healy) Thompson and son Sam from Wichita, KS. Those classmates not attending were: Jeannie Augustine, Norene Fletcher, Don & Ron Johnson, Kim McCormickTownsend, Jane Moran Oborny, Terri Rogers Cox & Gerald Rourke.
Sherrina Peters Sabatini and her boys (Lorenzo 7 & Christian 5) have been visiting her dad, Dennis Peters in Plano, TX since the 18th of June (her husband Mario has been out to sea with the Italian Navy the months of June, July and August). She was in Great Bend from the 7th of July until the 15th as her mom and grandparents live there. Dennis had a Peters/Reynolds (his mothers family) reunion on the 13th & 14th at the Angus Inn in Great Bend with family coming from Tulsa, Hutchinson, Stafford and who knows where else!!! Because of all the family activities he did not make it to the rodeo on Friday, which he says was a real bummer!!!! He did make the golf tournament with the wild group from Great Bend, (Robert, Bennie, & Ronnie), but left right after to go back to the reunion. He said he cannot tell you how much fun we had with the groups we played with at the tournament. His side still hurts from all the laughter. He unfortunately returned home to find some serious water damage to his home due to air conditioning. Sherinna returned to Italy the 28th. Dennis says he will miss not getting those GRANDCHILDREN HUGS each morning when he gets up.
Shirley Higgins accompanied Jerry, Jodi, Tanner & Jenna Higgins to Plano, TX on Saturday to visit with Mylo & Ann Oyler. She also visited with her cousin, Mike Lovitt who lives in Dallas.

Tony Harp and his sons, Brian, Billy & Michael returned home SAFE from a motorcycle trip to Kentucky this past week. While in Memphis they stopped at a Harley dealership and Tony bought a new Ultra Classic Harley. Now he has cruise control and a stereo!!
Carol Weber accompanied Tammy Carlson from Happy Hollow Designs, Bison, to the first Tri-State Quilt Show in Goodland. Tammy was one of the teachers scheduled on Friday. They also had some extra time to go through an antique store.
The Hoisington American Legion baseball team came through the losers bracket to win the Class AA Zone baseball tournament in Hoisington on Sunday. They eliminated Nickerson from the tournament and defeated Beloit twice. They won the opener 6-4 and the second game 10-0. Justin Axman and Ryan Meade combined for a no-hitter in the second game. They will take their 26-11 record to Pratt for the State Tournament which begins on Friday.
Phyllis Conrad attended the funeral of Thelma Jacobs in LaCrosse on Monday. Thelmas dad, Frank J. Herrman & Phyllis mother, Margaretha C. Herrman Gerritzen were brother & sister.
Arlene Gilbert accompanied a couple of Mary K director friends from Wichita to Dallas for a Mary K meeting this past week.
Joann Micheli returned home Friday from visiting her daughter, Bob & Linda Dale, Audra & Evan in Littleton.

Dorothy Guidry hosted a Cajun supper on Saturday night. She served gumbo and fish and rice. Guests were Bob and Charmaine Wolfe, Mary DeKerlegand, Wilfrid and Twila Higgins, Jean Schutte, Russell and Veta Squires, John Squires, Julia and Francis Zeller, B. J. Fear, Bobby Foster, Babe Gilbert and Pat Derr.
Shane Anderson has been home on leave from the Air Force. He is stationed at Great Falls, Montana. He has served several tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. Keep our troops in your prayers.
Clarence A. Grumbein, 90, Dighton, died July 28, 2007, at Lane County Long Term Care. He was born March 1, 1917 in Ness County to Edwin and Clara Haas Grumbein. He was a U. S. Army veteran in World War 11. He owned his own body shop and motor company in Dighton. He married Zella Mae Doerr on June 18, 1944 in McCracken. She survives. They have one son, Dary and one daughter, Sondra. He was preceded in death by eight brothers, William, Aubrey, Merle, Jesse, Raymond, John, Franklin and Paul and one sister, Berle McFarren. Burial was in McCracken City Cemetery on Tuesday.

Laszlo Kovacs, a Hungarian-born cinematographer has died at age 74. He was a Budapest film student when he arrived in the United States as a political refugee in 1957. His work on Paper Moon was considered a masterpiece of black-and-white photography. He filmed other movies like - Five Easy Pieces, Shampoo, Easy Rider, Whats Up Doc, Mask. His latest Torn From the Flag is a feature documentary about the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. We remember the first day of filming at Nichol Cemetery of Paper Moon. There were three leather tooled chairs one for Ryan ONeal, one for Tatum ONeal and the third for Laszlo Kovacs none for Peter Bogdanovich, who was the director.
Addie Mills was a Sunday afternoon visitor of Danny and Marilyn Mills at Gorham. She brought a birthday cake in honor of Marilyns birthday. Enroute home Addie stopped in Hays to visit Joan Klee.
Family and friends of Ruth Yawger gathered on Tuesday for a birthday party at the West Side Spears in Wichita for her 97th birthday. There were 25 in attendance. She and Judy and Al Hugh were guests of Wanda, Joyce and Deb Luft at Town and Country restaurant on Monday evening for a birthday supper.
Boby Montonye, Castleton, was a Tuesday night guest of Carolyn Thompson. She was on her way to Colorado to visit her aunt and uncle and to camp.
It was great to have the Horse Show here on Saturday at the Jack Wilson Mustang Arena. An excellent lunch was served. Enjoy the rest of the Rush County Fair.
Susan Keith celebrated her birthday (39th for real) with a dinner at Gellas on Saturday night July 28. Guests were Al and Judy Hugh, Ruth Yawger, Mike and Shannon Keith, Carolyn Thompson, Ben Thompson and Galen Allen.

Rush county claims a population of 2,000 and a cultivated acreage of 4,000.
John G. Hicks was shot twice, one ball striking him in the left shoulder and the other high upon the right arm. It was an unprovoked assault by Bob Lancaster, a Texan.
August 1887
Wheat is coming in lively. The price ranges from 40 to 55 cents. The McKittrick boys have 900 bushels of wheat.
B. H. Hicks drives the finest outfit in town, new team, new buggy, new harness, new whip and new---we were going to say driver, but it is the same genial Ben.
August 1907
The annual school meeting was held yesterday. It was voted to hold a seven months term of school, the board being empowered to hold on eight months school if the funds on hand warrant it. School will begin the first Monday in September and will hire a male principal.
The McCracken Band was reorganized with members F. L. Snodgrass, Paul Kelly, John R. Lovitt, J. P. Warden, Sam Twiselton, Claude Starrett, Clifford Anderson, Clay Farwell, Mr. Bloom and Rolland Grumbein. They had their first blow Tuesday evening.

Mr. and Mrs. Adrian Doerr and family left Tuesday to make their home on a twenty-five hundred acre ranch near Siebert, Colo.
Kay Fear went to Kansas City Sunday to spend a few days visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Ward.
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Huxol a girl whom they have named Marvee Ann on July 31, 1947 at Hadley Hospital in Hays.
Born to Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Pavlu, of Danby Valley, a daughter, Linda Jean, on July 27, 1947 at St. Anthony hospital at Hays.

Dr. Rolla H. Cheney, 64, died July 28, 1957. Dr. Cheney had been a dentist in McCracken since 1932. Burial was in the McCracken City Cemetery.
Carol Faye Bible began work Wednesday as receptionist in Dr. Grenes office at LaCrosse taking the place of Mary Margaret Vogle.

Beverly Weisner and Keith Higgins were married Saturday, July 16 at St. Josephs Church in Hays. They will be at home in Sharon Springs where he is teaching.
The Rein family reunion was held Sunday, July 24, at the VFW Hall in Lacrosse.
The Higgins family held their reunion in McCracken on Sunday. The reunion was hosted by Ida Meyers & Charity Farley for the Henry Higgins family.
McCracken won the state championship in K-18 Cookie League baseball for the second time when they defeated Osborne. They are the only team to win the State championship twice in the 28 years of Cookie League play. Players pictured in the McCracken History Book were Shannon McKinney, Doug Elias, Kevin Casey, Ken Roth, Neal Jacobs, Jim Cole, Mike Stull, Ricky Tincher, Craig Stull, Dale Elias, Kellye Irvin, Jerry Casey, Troy Zinn, Bill Cole, Jeff McCormick and Scott Moore. Coaches are Jerry Higgins and Chet Irvin. Manager is Jim Schafer, bat boys, Chris Casey and Gary Barnes.
Daryl Casey and Barbara Ocker were married Saturday, July 30, at St. Mary of the Plains College Chapel in Dodge City. They are at home in LaCrosse.

First place in the Rush County softball tournament was the Bittel Excavating Team. Members are Jerry Higgins, Lonnie Irvin, Ronnie Randa, Chuck Higgins, Jeff McCormick, Jimmy Cole, Chuck Seaman, Don Reidl, Don Irvin, Dave Wilson, Kelly Irvin, Mike Conner and Neal Jacobs.
500 were on hand to celebrate the 100th birthday of Brownell.

Congratulations to Mark and Leigh Ann Brackney on the birth of a new baby boy, Trace William.
Mamie Crawshaw and Alana Rogers motored to Topeka Monday and visited points of interest in and around the Topeka area.
Members of the Hampton Restoration Committee and friends met at Hampton cemetery with Bob and Lynn Litson of LaCrosse. Bob is a douser who used two copper rods to determine the location of unmarked graves. He was able to locate 109 in the north part of the cemetery.
There was a 40 year old streaker on the streets of McCracken late, late Friday night!!!!!!!
