I wrote down the wrong names for the honor guard in the parade, it was Diz Washaliski and Bill Zeller instead of Diz Washaliski and Dennis Elias.  I also missed a couple of states that were represented at the Rodeo; Joe Jennings comes from Florida, Phil & Judith Whitis Carver from Minnesota. As Jack always told me, “Of all the things I’ve lost I miss my mind the most”.

Our judges for the parade were Robyn Deines, Dorothy Guidry and Kathy Keely.

Those who attended the rodeo meeting on Monday were Gary Barnes, Coleen Kerns, Bet McCormick, Bill Greenway, Mark Brackney, L. Pat Casey, Tom Prosser & Cody, Gerald Barnes, Bob House, Roger & Brenda Legleiter, Mike & Jerilyn Stull, Deb Rogers & Kerri Morgan.  A report was given on the income & expenses.  Approximately 3,000 people attended all nights of our rodeo.

Congratulations to Dallas and Jamie DeWitt, Topeka, on the birth of a son, Hunter Joe, born

Pictures from the parade and Rodeo are posted in the McCracken Café.  They were taken and given to us by Dean Gilbert.

Jerry was reminiscing this week when he was coaching Tanner’s 12-and under baseball team in the USSSA baseball tournament held at Fun Valley in Hutchinson.  The temperatures hovered around the 110* mark, the same as in July, 1980. In 1980 the McCracken State Farm Insurance Team participated in the USSSA Class D invitational in Hutchinson that year. They lost their first game 5-2 and fought their way back through the loser’s bracket by winning their next eight consecutive games.  The team won games by 16-1, 6-1, 7-6, 14-1, 13-5, 7-6, 9-0 and lost 10-4, taking 2nd place.  Members were Doug Higgins, Les Rogers, Mike Conner, Chuck Higgins, Lonnie Irvin, Rod Taylor, Rich Higgins, Craig Cooper, Don Irvin, Terry Peters, Rich Showalter and Jerry Higgins.  In the tournament two players were honored;  Don Irvin for tying for the most home runs and Jerry Higgins MVP. The team’s record was 47-11, earning 8 trophies out of 8 attempts.

Sarah Priddy and children, Helena McGaughey and Austin have been enjoying horseback riding in the evenings.

Thayne and Machree Jones go to Loveland each August for the Sculpture show.  They usually bring back pictures of some of the bronzes that are located in the Sculpture Park.
We had the opportunity to see the park on our recent trip.  I would recommend that if you are going to Loveland this is a must stop.  Also if you are traveling I-80 and stop in Ogallala, go see the Western Musical Review that is held each evening.  It features, a shoot-out, cowboys, dance hall girls, comedians and singers.  Most of the performers attend Ogallala High School age.  Ogallala is an end-of-the-trail town like Dodge City.  In the near future Charles Norton, who sculpted the Buffalo Bill statue in Oakley, will begin a sculpture for Ogallala.

Our sympathy to the family of Vince C. Greene, 80, San Antonio, Texas, who died July 15, 2006 at his home.  He was the brother of Billie Slemp. Burial was in the National Cemetery.

Small world items: Last weekend Gary Barnes and Coleen Kerns attended the PBR Rodeo in Tulsa, Oklahoma. While at the Rodeo, someone whistled at Gary, it was Taylor Mitchell, the son of Randy Mitchell, our Rodeo judge.  He was wearing one of our McCracken Rodeo t-shirts.  Gary ALSO won some $$ at a Casino before coming home.   When he arrived home he visited with Mike Flax and learned it was his wife's nephew, Casey Hayes, who won the PBR Bull Riding Contest.  $38,000 for 24 seconds of very hard work!

Don’t forget to bring your past due library books to the library during the week of August 14-18. . .All fines are forgiven.
