WHAT CAN WE SAY???  It was another great rodeo weekend.  The golf tournament ‘hosted’ 30 golf teams with an absolutely beautiful morning.  No wind, the course was perfect & everyone had a fun, fun time.  That is what this tournament is all about.  We give the golf cart of the Alan McCloy Rodeo team a thumbs up.  The cart was ‘pulled’ by a small train engine, you could set on lawn chairs, there is room for an ice cooler and a dog that retrieves golf balls. Approximately 275 enjoyed dinner under the Big Top Saturday afternoon.  Where else could you buy a dinner for $7 - $5 and be that good.  Even Mac Donald’s can’t beat it.
Thanks to all of those who helped with the tent, putting up tables etc.  It was very much appreciated.
 
It was announced at the dinner Saturday afternoon that the alumni committee will not be mailing alumni letters to those who have not paid their dues this year.  We have been approached about putting names each week in our column of those who did join.   As Jan mentioned, you may join at any time.
 
Last Wednesday evening those enjoying ‘Mexican Food’ at the Anchor Inn in Hutchinson were Jerry & Jodi Higgins, Teresa Lovitt, Lora Faiman and Kevin Brening,
 
In the USSSA 12-and-Under AAA World Series held in Hutchinson last week, the Mighty Bucks from Columbia, MO defeated the Kansas Rebels 3-2 in the consolation final Friday afternoon.  Clay Faiman, son of Scott & Lora Lovitt Faiman, is a member of the team.
The Hutch Hawks from Hutchinson went 2 – 3 for the tournament.  Tanner Higgins is a member of the Hutch team.
 
Leslie Underwood, Lancaster, CA, was a Wednesday – Tuesday guest of Shirley Higgins.  Other weekend guests were Chuck & Zach, Jerry, Tanner & Jenna, Tammy & Kyra, John, Kayla, Nicole, Lindsey and friend Trinity. Jodi was working at the bank, Lonnie & Cameron were in Hutchinson where Cameron attended a MAYB basketball tournament.
 
The class of 1957 met and ate at the ‘Big Top” in the park and later gathered at the senior center.  Those present were Grant & Jodene C. Dawson Helmer, Derby, KS; Larry & Joyce Showalter Eisenhour, Salina; Jud & Reva Rodeman Lloyd, Denver, Roy & Phyllis Conrad.  Those stopping by to visit were Furlen Irvin, Marlene Funk & Kent Bible, who came to explore his old home place.
 
Memorials have been given to the McCracken American Legion in memory of Lyle Davenport from Clifford & Arlene Gilbert, Carolyn Thompson, Shirley Higgins, Jerry Higgins, Reggie & Brenda Irvin, Bev & Vida Irvin, C.A. & Carol Klitzke, Lorraine Ryan, Vivian Simmons, Ms. Helen Goering, Dave & Carolyn Davenport and Will Zeller.
 
Congratulations to Don Casey, Jerry Higgins and Richard Conrad on the big 50.  You are all a half century!
 
PERFECT:  What a Success.  Thanks to all those who had a part in making the rodeo/alumni weekend a special time.  The perfect weather is the result of heavenly angels who watch over the Rodeo.
 
Approximately 25 riders took part in the Trail Ride.  Besides the horses, there were two JD Gators and this was the sixth trail ride.
 
Madison Ann Kirk was baptized at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Hutchinson on Saturday July 7, 2007.  Those attending were John, Ellen and Josh Moran, David, Stacy and children; Marge Moran, Cliff and Carol Kirk and Madison’s parents, Clark and Nicole Kirk.  Michele Moran and Bill Moran prepared the after party.

Butch Hayes will be head football coach at Ellis High School this fall.

July 1887
Plans have been made and ground staked out for two huge coal bins and twelve chutes west of the depot.
 
July 1907
Peter B. Metz loaded his household goods and yesterday took his departure for his new home near Sheldon, Missouri.
 
Owen McKittrick, junior member of the Enterprise force, is one of the heavy men in Percy Edgington’s harvest crew this week and Onas Elmore is working in one of Joseph Jenning’s header boxes.  Billy Grumbein is running a header up on the Ryan farm and Guy Ryan is running the lumber yard office.
 
July 1937
The biggest rain of the year fell last Saturday night sending creeks to flood stage and filling gullies in various places.  Big Timber which runs through McCracken was running a good head of water.  Four inches were reported.
 
Jake Herzel, Bob Belcher, Paul Lovitt, Fern Ryan Jones and Sam Lovitt are some of the clerks in D. D. Hunt Drug Store.
 
July 1947
The Misses Dorothy Elmore, Phyllis Cheney and Joan Ryan will leave the last of the week for a vacation trip to Colorado.
 
Albert Rush Brenner, pioneer Rush county farm, died Sunday at St. Rose hospital in Great Bend.  Burial was from St. Mary’s Catholic Church.  As a youth, Brenner spent five years in the army, serving in the Indian wars and on the Mexican border.  In 1881 he moved to Rush county to take up farming and lived her continuously until a year ago when he moved to Great Bend to make his home with a son, G. R. Brenner.

Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Casey on the birth of a son, Donald, born July 19, 1957 in LaCrosse.
 
Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Vic Higgins on the birth of a son, Jerry Lee, born Sunday, July 21, 1957 in Lacrosse.
 
Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Walter Rogers on the birth of a daughter, Jacklin, born July 23, 1957 in LaCrosse.  Jacklin died in December 1958.  She had leukemia.
 
Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Conrad on the birth of a son, Paul Richard, born July 25, 1957 in LaCrosse.

Those attending the Methodist Camp at Scott City are Danny Conner, David Derr and Roger Legleiter.
 
Larry Eisenhour and family have moved from Topeka to Dodge City.
 
Mr. and Mrs. William Grumbein have moved into the Robert Rein house.
 
July 1977
The Brownell American legion played Garden City on July 2 in Garden City.  Mark McCormick and Chuck Higgins led the attack with three hits each.  Les Rogers chipped in with two, winning 8-5.  In the July 9th game they out-slugged Larned 19-14.  Larry Buster had three hits.
 
Those helping with preparing the poles for the new street signs were Francis Wierman, Don Davis, Joe Casey and Celestin Stremel.  Those involved with the assembly and installation were Thomas Barnes, Don Greenway, Don Davis, Mary Ann Moran, Ellen Davis, Francis Wierman, Gladys Fear, Lucille Elias, Robert Wierman and Dorothy Smith.  The first street sign was installed at Gladys Fears’ corner, who was chairman of this committee.  The cost of the signs and poles was $1,420.00 which makes  each sign and pole cost $31.00  Helping with the street sign fund drive were Dorothy Smith, Caroline Durand, Gladys Fear and Lucille Elias.

McCracken celebrated its Centennial on July 17, 18, 19, 1987
 
The Centennial play was “The Rat Catcher’s daughter.
 
The Grand Marshals of the Centennial parade were Claude and Lillian Irvin.  Fannie Davenport was Queen and Audice Thompson was King.
 
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Casey, a son, Justin Lee, July 12 in Hays.
 
July 1997
They nearly burned down the school house on Saturday celebrating Babe’s 60th birthday. (So what happened on the 70th????)
 
Clayton Wilson won the 30-30 donated by Bob House in the raffle.
 
Norman Baldwin donated a painting of the Hampton school, cemetery and the surrounding countryside to the McCracken Public Library.
