We had terrific weather for Rodeo week despite it being a little on the warm side. All the events went off without a hitch and everyone was pleased about all the activities that were planned. As Rogers said in the Hays paper: every once in a while he wonders if it is all worth it. But is certain is. 30 years is a long time to' keep a goin'…..but the crowds bear out that it is the event to attend including 70 boy scouts from St. Louis.

Charmaine Wolfe has donated the book “Inside the Museum Archive Software Project” to the museum. It is used with the free program which will help us archive all the items in the Jail/Museum. This is an invaluable project.

The Paper Moon was a huge hit. It will become part of our permanent display. Our thanks to Bob Wolfe who designed and worked to get it ready for rodeo week. Others that contributed to the displays and maintenance of the museum were Phyllis Conrad, Allie Ault, Chris Ault, Charmaine Wolfe, Tammy Irvin, Shirley Higgins.

Phil S. Dixon's book John “Buck” O'Neil, the Rookie, the Man, the Legacy 1938 was purchased for the museum in Memory of Floyd Thompson.

An early map of Trego County, prepared for the Atlas of Kansas was made in April 1876 and donated to the museum. It included the towns of Ogallah, WaKeeney and Collyer - sheep, cattle and horse ranches. Physical sites were Round Mound, Castle Rock and Post offices.

Alicia Rues donated a pearl necklace, a Pep Club pin, a State Music Festival medal, felt blue and gold music notes and chevron and a blue mustang to the Jail/Museum.

We honor the class of 1946 celebrating the 70th anniversary of their graduation from McCracken High School.. Two members were in the parade, Hoop Higgins on the military float and Ben Thompson on the Yawger Ranch float. Other members of that class were the late Donald Davis, Nathalie Dugan, Dorothy Elmore and Kenneth Thompson.

We wish a speedy recovery for Kenneth Foster who had injuries when he fell from the veterans float. He is badly bruised and had a mild concussion.

One hundred and ten people braved the heat and attended mass at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Saturday late afternoon. Michelle Higgins Nelson, daughter of Larry and Melody Higgins accompanied organist Susan Keith and choir director Michele Moran during the services. Father Matthew Kumi celebrated the mass. Pam Pavlu was the lector and Shannon Keith the server. Mike Keith and Jason Moran collected the donations and Wilfrid and Twila Higgins brought up the gifts. Roy Conrad was sacristan.

All of Hoop and Twila's family were able to attend his 90th birthday party at the McCracken City Park on Saturday morning along with many other family and friends. Congratulations.

Our thanks to Bob and Charmaine Wolfe for the construction work etc. in the making of the Paper Moon. You can probably look on Face-book and see several pictures. It will be stored in the museum.

When Bill and Barbara Baus were eating supper at the rodeo grounds Friday evening, the gentleman sitting across from them was from Maine. They started visiting and he said he was on vacation just seeing the country. He was driving down I-70 around the Hays area when he heard about the rodeo on the radio, got on his GPS, found McCracken and was enjoying the festivities. Pays to advertise!!!

Ron Baker, former player for the Wichita State Shockers, has written a book called “You’re Too Big to Dream Small”. He will be at the Cosmo sphere in Hutchinson, August 3 from 4:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. for signing, August 3 at ElDorado High School 9:30 – 1:00; August 5 at Exploration Place, Wichita from 10:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. and in his home town of Scott City August 4, 1:00 p.m. - ?. We congratulate this young man and wish him success.

Weekend guests of Les and Rose Diehl were Sue Schuster, Colorado; Pat and Vicki Salsbury Topeka, Richard and Nancy Baker, Manhattan.

Callie Weber had as guests, Mackenzie Weber, daughter, Trystin Paulin, nephew, and Brian Garlitos, friend, for the week end. They enjoyed the pool, rodeo, game at the library and dinner and Miss Kitty’s Variety Show at Dodge City

Shirley’s guests were Lindsey, Jerry, Jenna, Baylee, Maddy, Tanner, Joe, Brodie, Tammy, John, Kyra, Bryant, Chuck, Zach, and Brady,

The McCracken Library held a “What is wrong with this picture” game on Saturday morning. Eleven kids participated and received Chamber Bucks for coming into the library and finding all 20 objects that were wrong. Other adults came in and looked at the Kansas Thespian display. It was nice to see a crowd in the library. Brad Penka was there also scanning pictures of the past that were brought in. The two librarians Ruth Crawshaw and Callie Weber, participated in the parade and passed out book marks along with candy. =

Ron and Cathy Casey, Alex, Catherine and John, Topeka was here for the rodeo. Tom Rues, New Hampshire, was also here for about a week, enjoyed the rodeo and was a guest of his mother, Arline Rues. Catherine went home with a new friend, a kitty who has been a resident of the Diehl’s for the past week.

A 90th birthday cake for John Jerome Langdon was served Saturday afternoon for some family and friends.

The MHS Alumni golf tournament was again a success with 28 teams.
