Welcome to the 30th annual McCracken Rodeo.
Congratulations to Wilfrid Hoop Higgins who will be celebrating his 90th. The party is scheduled for Saturday morning, June 9, from 10 until noon at McCracken City Park. It is come and go. His birthday is being celebrated early so all the family can be here.

We have been blessed by a bountiful harvest this year.
The Paper Moon display will be moving around town during rodeo week for example, during the day the display will be at the museum and evenings at different locations around the rodeo grounds. Take a moment to take your picture on the moon! The moon was made by Bob Wolfe.
Eric Scriven surprised us with a wonderful wood carving of the Jail to use as a fund raiser. Tickets will be available at the museum, the alumni lunch, July 9, or any board member. We will select the winner at a fund raiser in Aug/Sept and you do not need to be present to win.. The tickets are $1.00 each or six for $5.00.
The McCracken Post Office will be selling Forever Stamped envelopes and Postcards with the 30th McCracken cancellation stamp, July 8, 2016. Come by the post office Friday, 8 A. M. to 12>00 PM. or 5:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. at the rodeo grounds.
The Summer Reading Program enjoyed a good 'hike' at the last program. Everyone painted and decorated hiking sticks and read a book about a little boy going camping with his mom. Naturally we had to have camping/hiking food so the campers chowed on granola bars and hot dogs! Those enjoying the hike were: Gaige and Kaydence Kendall, Sadie, Quinn, Camryn and Rylind Anderson, Jackson McGaughey, Clayton Sewell, Hudson Jacobs, Owen and Evelyn Keener. Calling all area Veterans!!! There will be a float decorated and ready for you to board at the North end of McCracken Main St. between 2:00 - 2:15 p.m. Sat. July 9th for the 30th Rodeo Anniversary Parade. If you need more information, call Arlene. 785-394-1940 (cell number).
Be sure to take time during the rodeo week-end to visit the McCracken Jail Museum. Check out the displays featuring McCracken Rodeo t-shirts, Indian dolls, Paper Moon items, and a tribute to Shannon McKinney.
Saturday, July 9th, 8:00 AM 4 Person Texas Rodeo/Alumni Scramble, $100 per team. 9 HOLE TOURNAMENT! No lunch served at the tournament but there will be an alumni lunch at the city building in McCracken.
Jeff and Anita Butler hosted a pre-4th of July gathering at their farm Sunday evening. Friends and relatives
were in attendance.
A birthday get-to-gather was held for Arline Rues at the home of Ron, Cathy and Alex Casey. Those attending were Tony, Tomi, Katie, Emma and Will Rues, Emmas friend Kevin, Mark McCormick, Linda Dale, Rose and Les Diehl and Tom Rues.
History Notes 1977
Jim Bromlow was elected Mayor of Alexander. Wilma Washaliski was high 30 scratch in the bowling league. Lorrie Morgan has completed her student teaching at Hutchinson Public Schools. Wheat streak mosaic and soil born mosaic have been found in central Kansas this year. The alumni banquet will be held May 29 in the high school auditorium. The McCracken Mustangs received the championship plaque after defeating the Victoria Knights in the Class 1A-2A Regional baseball tournament in Larks Park in Hays by a score of 7-4. Layne Morgan, the starting pitcher was credited with the win although he was relieved in the 6th by Kellye Irvin. Jerry Casey had a 3 run triple in the third. In the 4th, Irvin and Casey had back to back doubles and Les Rogers had a triple. The Mustangs will enter the State tournament in Emporia on Friday. Team members are Jerry Casey, Mike Conner, Kellye Irvin, Joe Conner, Mark Baus, Larry Buster, Dale Elias, Tim Seltman, Layne Morgan and Leslie Rogers. Rich Billinger, coach. The Athenian Club celebrated their 40th anniversary recently. Those honored were Margaret Hair, Margaret Buxton and Katharen Rodeman, chapter founders; Tacy Hanson, 39 years; Lorraine Ryan, 26 years, Lorraine Norlin, 23 years; Edythe Baldwin, 34 years; Marie House, 34 years; Lucille Reinhardt, 24 years.
We were blessed again with rain this past weekend. Unfortunately we have local farmers who are still trying to wrap up their harvest. The forecast is calling for hot weather this coming week. Hoping the harvest is completed and everyone will have a chance to celebrate together at the McCracken Rodeo.
The Rush County Historical Society is seeking family histories, personal accounts and photographs of the families who have shaped our county. We will scan your photographs or other documents and return them to you unharmed. We will be at the McCracken Library Saturday, July 9, 2016; 9:00 a.m. 12:00.
