Trent and Tyler Timpson and Angie Huggard were weekend guests of Danny and Patricia Petz.  On Saturday they all attended the wedding of Lori Haas and Bobby Brubaker in
 La Crosse at St. Michael's Catholic Church.  Lori is Maurice and Debbie Haas's daughter from La Crosse.  Kelly and Melanie Petz and their children Nathan, Nicholas, Kallynn, and Kameron of Hays joined the celebration. Everyone had a fun time at the reception, dinner, and dance.
 
Congratulations to Jeremy Higgins and Ashley Moneymaker who were married June 13, 2009 in Olathe.  Jeremy is the son of Doug and Mary Higgins, Lyons.
 
Brenda Legleiter and Addie Mills were among the many friends and family members who attended funeral services for Shirley Miller Jennings on Monday at Larned.  She was a niece of the late Lydia Mills and Brenda works at Hays Medical Center with Shirley’s daughter, Debbie.
 
‘Arky’ and Diana McNair were Saturday evening guests of Spanky, Leslie and Lillian McGaughey.
 
A birthday party in honor of Clay North's sixth birthday and a Father's Day BBQ was held on Sunday, June 21st.  Those attending were Ted, Shawna, Clay & Dalton North, Paula, Brandon, Logan & Carson North, Arlyn & Jan North, Dean & Eloise Thornton, Patrick, Shauna, Creiton & Kesalea Jennings, Don, Shannon & Megan Erb, and Erin Jennings.  Clay made his dad and grandpa's Father's Day crowns in honor of their special day.
 
Chuck Higgins and Zach and Cameron Horesky were Friday guests of Jeff and Liz Jennings in Kansas City.  Zach and Cameron attended the KC – St. Louis Cardinals game Friday evening. They went early and watched batting practice.  They returned home Saturday evening.
 
Johnny Mac Showalter, Arky McNair, Les Diehl and Roger MaNair attended the golf tournament in Ellis on Saturday, they all got drenched with the rain; Tony Harp and Sean Peters had the same luck golfing in Ellsworth. 
 
Tuesday night Addie Mills was a guest of Rev and Mrs. Robert Brown at Holcomb and also with Chris Zimmerman.
 
Drive by the rodeo grounds and notice how nice it looks.  The pipe is painted blue and white and was done by Rhiannen Perdue, Kenny Birt, Dylan Derr, Dave Crawford, Sierra Jones, Michael Mitchell, Tommy Moeder and Brenda Legleiter.
 
Jeff Crawshaw had a doctor’s appointment in Wichita recently and the report was good.
 
Those attending the rodeo meeting Sunday evening were Brenda and Roger Legleiter, Mark Brackney and Beau, Bill Greenway and Stephanie, William Greenway, Mike and Jerilyn Stull, Shawna North and Clay, Barbara Rupp, Gary Barnes, Colleen Kerns, Shirley Higgins, Ty Elias, Brenda Boese, Brett and Holly Gilbert and girls.
 
David Bolz is replacing his wife Linda Bolz as minister of the United Methodist Church in McCracken.

The Kansas Travel newspaper is available at the Post Office.  The lead article is about Kansas grown grapes for wine.  Today there are 250 to 300 acres of vines.  It 1901 Kansas had 5,568 acres of vines producing 173,000 gallons of wine.   Grapes produce about $3,000 per acre.
 
Mildred Maie Hurd, 94, died June 5, 2009 at the Extended Care Center in Pueblo.  She was a resident of Pueblo since 1942.  She was born at Rantoul, Kansas, on August 28, 1914 and grew up in McCracken.  Her parents were William and Mahala Ramsey.  She had three sisters and one brother who preceded her in death.  She graduated from high school in 1935 and married Joseph K. Hurd, Sr. in 1937 and moved to Hoisington where her three children were born.  The family moved to Pueblo shortly after the outbreak of World War 11.  She was a member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church.  She worked at the Pueblo Ordnance Deport and in the dietary department of the Colorado State Hospital.  She retired after 20 years of service.  She and her husband enjoyed traveling, visiting grandchildren, fishing and tending a poppy and rose garden.  He died of Alzheimer’s in 1999.  A daughter, Kay Frances Wicker, as well as three grandsons preceded her in death.  Surviving are two sons, Joseph of Wellesley, Mass., Vernon of Pueblo and a step-daughter, Greta Williams of Denver.  She is also survived by nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren.  Interment was in the Imperial Memorial Gardens.
 
Donna Miner is a renewing member of the Jail/Museum.
 
A memorial has been received to the Jail/Museum in memory of Grace and Ralph Thompson from Bruce and Ellen Kershner.

McCracken History Notes
 
June 1899
Married Sunday, May 25, 1899, at the Methodist parsonage in McCracken, Rev. Cox officiating, Mr. Benjamin Yawger and Miss Pearl Nichol, both of this place.  The bride is the daughter of Wm. Nichol and her charming character and graces have made her a favorite among us.  The groom, the son of J. A. Yawger, is a young man of sterling character and industrious habits.  The young couple will reside on a farm a few miles southeast of town where a neat home has been built.
 
Born Wednesday morning to Charles Lovitt and wife, a fine son.
 
Chris. Rodeman and Robert Nichol each lost a valuable milk cow by lightning during the storm last week.
 
June 1909
McCracken will not be having an old fashioned holiday affair next week, but everybody will have a good time just the same.  The program for the day will consist of a sunrise salute at 5:00 a.m.; band parade and concert at 9:00; automobile parade and contest at 10:00 a.m.; dinner at 12; band concert at 1:00 p.m.; baseball 2 p.m.; general social time until 6:00; supper; band concert; dance and at 10:00 o’clock fireworks.  Hoisington will play ball against McCracken and the Brownell basketball team will contest with out team.  More than a hundred dollars worth of fire works will illuminate the heavens.
 
June 1919
There is no place to water the teams who are hauling wheat because the well in front of Warden’s store was removed when we got our new water system.
 
June 1939
Edward Thompson, eldest son of Ralph Thompson, is working as a night cook in a Wichita restaurant.  He first worked there as a dishwasher, buy the management had difficulty keeping a night chef, so he was given a chance at the job and made good.
 
The first load of 1939 wheat was delivered Tuesday afternoon by W. R. Metz to the Lindsborg Elevator Co.  It tested 60 pounds and the amount paid was 62 cents per bushel.
 
Miss Inez Showalter and Mr. Thurman Manos, Miami, Oklahoma were united in marriage June 26, 1939 at the Methodist parsonage in McCracken.  The young couple were accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Carl Bible.
 
June 1959
Harold D. Juvenal completed the reconnaissance helicopter repair course at the transportation school, Fort Eustis, Virginia.  He was trained to repair, modify and overhaul Army rotary wing aircraft.  He entered the Army in 1953.  The 24 year old soldier is a 1953 graduate of McCracken High School and was employed by the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company in Pueblo before entering the Army.
 
June 1979
Joe Casey warns that there have been people swimming in the McCracken pool after hours and if they are caught they will lose their swimming privileges.
 
480 acres of Rush County land brought $735.00 an acre for a total of $352,800.00 Tuesday, June 19.  It was the Wollman estate.
