Kansas History Note
The Legislature of 1873 chose John J. Ingalls, United States Senator. He served as Senator until 1891. In the absence of the Vice-President he served at the President of the Senate.  Oratory was his weapon.  He was a force to be reckoned with in the Congress.  A statue of Senator Ingalls is in the Hall of Fame in the Capitol building in Washington, D. C.  It is the work of Charles Henry Niehaus, the most famous sculptor in the United States at that time. Senator Ingalls lived in Atchison for forty years. He died in Las Vegas, New Mexico in 1900.
