We were very pleased to receive birthdates and anniversaries from Ben and Janett Rogers and their family. Ben is the son of the late Orval and Esther Rogers. We would appreciate any other dates if you are not on our master list.

The Catalpa trees are especially beautiful in bloom this year.

We are grateful to those who mow at the cemeteries. With the rain they were all like a carpet this year.

The swimming pool opened on Memorial Day.

The dues letter and brochure from McCracken Historical Museum, Inc. (Jail/Museum) went out this week. Charmaine Wolfe has begun to keep our records on spreadsheets. We have added a new category to donations. Anyone donating $100 or up will be a member of the Blue and Gold group.

The exhibit that features movie posters and photos that celebrate the connection to Kansas in film and television is now in the library. Please stop by and enjoy!!

The City of McCracken appreciates all the volunteer work by residents this past week: Mark McCormick for his weekend work at the City Cemetery setting the flag poles, mowing, picking up trash and weed whipping at the cemetery, painting the pool; Kevin Anderson, Scott Keener for all their mowing and weed whipping; Glenn Pfannenstiel, Chris Ault, Layne Morgan and Lynnette Doornbos for their work with the setting of flag poles at the cemetery and painting the pool, Bill and Michael Greenway for their hard work getting the pool pumps working, Lance McCormick for all the repair work done to the plumbing at the pool. The flags at the Cemetery look awesome. If you wish one for your loved one, please contact Debi Schuckman or Rose Diehl. Lynnette also painted flag poles on Main Street and at the legion. She has been doing lots of sprucing up around town! Look out for her paint brush!!! Martin Higgins, Lance McCormick and Les Diehl put flags up on Main Street for Memorial Day. Myron and Debi Schuckman did lots of work pulling weeds on Main Street and painting.

Sally Irvin and Rose Diehl worked at the McCracken Library on Memorial Day. Free bottled water and cookies for folks that stopped by. Callie Weber and Rose Diehl worked Saturday and Sunday putting up the traveling exhibit at the library. Carol Weber working on sweeping and cleaning the gutters in front of the library. Looks nice.

Sue Knoebber Coffman has retired from teaching and coaching in Andover. She started teaching and coaching in McCracken High School. She and her volleyball team placed 2nd in state tournament in 1983 at Pratt Skyline.

Dean Gilbert, his granddaughter Jeanette and great-grandson Billy Dean from Latham were visitors of Shirley Saturday afternoon.

History Notes 1976

MHS basketball opened its season with a 51-47 win over Lucas. Mike Conner had 16 points, Layne Morgan 12 and Mark Baus 8. MHS girl’s squad is Cheryl Foreman, Ellen Davis, Janet Unrein, Kerri Derr, Kim McCormick, Patty Swartz, Terri Rogers, Norma Elmore, Tammy Higgins, Diane McFarren, Lisa Schuckman and Coach Sue Knoebber. Voters in pre-unification districts of Alexander and Rush Center will go to the polls on April 5 to close schools in Alexander and Rush Center. Terry Scheuerman recently recorded two songs that he has written, “The Wheat Farmer Blues” and “Colorado Woman”. Dear Santa: For Christmas I would like a Marx Big Wheel and Tonka Crane. Please bring my little brother something too. We have both been good boys, Love, Travis Elias, age 3. Dear Santa, I have tried to be a good boy this year. Please bring me Mr. Mouth Game, some pj’s with racing cars on them; please bring my brother Nathan some presents too. Adam Showalter, age 5. MHS girl’s basketball team won 75-15 at Palco. Kim McCormick scored 19, Tammy Higgins 17 and Ellen Davis 14. Roxann Rogers received her degree from Ft. Hays at the end of the fall semester.
