Barb Kankelos, Topeka, a reading specialist and friend of Rose Diehl, donated new books for children at the McCracken Public Library. Please come look as they are wonderful. It is just like going to a book fair only you get to keep all of these books. The Library also received a box of books from Mrs. Joe (Linda) Jennings this past week. If you havent checked out a book or looked at what the Library has to offer, you are missing out on a great past time.
Tayler Stull and Scott Irvin were among those who attended the Hutch Dragon Football Camp held in Great Bend on Friday.

McCracken Rodeos Cutest Cowboy and Cowgirl Contest! Welcome to the first annual McCracken Rodeo Cutest Cowboy and Cowgirl Contest! The Contest will be held on Saturday July 12th, 2008 at 4 pm following the Parade on Main Street. Participating age groups are as follows
1-2 years, 3-4 years, 5-6 years, 7-8 years and 9-10 years old. The registration and entry fee is $20.00 per participating child. The McCracken Rodeo would like to give all participating children on accompanying adult admission pass to the Rodeo on Saturday night! All children participating will enter the Rodeo at no charge as they are considered Rodeo Royalty! With the fee your child, if a Girl, will receive a tiara for her Cutest Cowgirl feature, if your little Cowgirl wins she will receive a tiara and sash! For your little Cowboy he will receive boot spurs for his cutest cowboy feature, if your little Cowboy wins he will be receiving boot spurs and a cowboy belt buckle. All participating children will be introduced and asked a question on the day of the Contest. This question will be

Those attending the Rodeo meeting this past week were Roger and Brenda Legleiter, Gary Barnes, Colleen Kerns, Bet McCormick, Ava North, Brett and Holly Gilbert, Jerilyn Stull and Colby. Several items were discussed and numerous ads were given to Jerilyn.
Brandon North invited Grandma Jan North to go with him and his 3rd grade class on their end of year field trip to Rolling Hills Zoo. What a neat place! The two of them say they are going back and take their time looking at the animals.

Week-end guests of Arlyn & Jan North were Dwight & Sherri Eisenhour and Melissa McDowell--all from Cimarron, KS. and Dan & Paulette Woellhof of Council Bluffs, IA.
Saturday morning the family of Glenn McKenzie gathered at the Ransom Cemetery for the interment of his ashes. Glenn was the brother of Icis Eisenhour. That evening Icis's children hosted a picnic at the home of Arlyn & Jan North with many from the McKenzie family attending. One of Glenn's grandsons entertained the group with guitar & singing. Jan says the next American Idol may have entertained on her deck. Icis was able to stay with the group all day. Thank you, Debbie Gaunt, for the guitar on such short notice. Only in a small town!!
Memorial Day guests of Danny and Pat Petz were Trent and Tyler Timson and Angie Huggard. We all attended the Mc Cracken Services at the cemetery and then had lunch and visited with Dolores Petz. Other guests at Dolores's home were Kirby Petz, Phyllis Higgins, Sabrina Higgins, Maddy Petz, Terry and Jim Everhart, Clayton, Josh, and Megan.

The Hoisington American Legion baseball team participated in a tournament held at Plainville held on Saturday and Sunday. Other teams participating were Smith Center, Russell, Plainville, Ellis, Wakeeney, and Goodland. Hoisington won over Goodland, lost to Russell and had wins over Wakeeney and Ellis giving them third place. Zach Higgins is a member of the Hoisington team.
The McCracken Public Library welcomes Bill Zeller as their new board member.
Antone Foust was guest of honor for his 8th birthday at the home of his parents, Chad Foust and Crystal Ryan. A remark was made that his parents should be awarded parents of the weekend as 7 or 8 boys were overnight guests. They slept outside in a tent with some water guns!!!
LOOKING BACK: McCracken High School won 1st place in the annual REN League scholarship; LaCrosse was next in line then Bison, Otis and Schoenchen. Those receiving honors were: LuAnne Scheideman, 1st in freshman English; Catherine Cain 2nd and Joy Foos, Bison won 3rd. Lynnette Pearson won 1st in sophomore English; Norma Jean Auston, Alexander 2nd; Elaine Mauler, Otis 3rd. Wm. Spomer 1st in junior English; Eileen Wittie, Alexander 2nd and Marjorie Renz and Harold Ochs, LaCrosse tied for 3rd. Floyd Thompson 2nd in State in plane geometry, Richard Buxton 3rd in world history; Wendell Hinman 4th in American government and LuAnne Scheideman 5th in State in freshman English. Honorable mention went to Catherine Cain and Gladys Thompson in English 1; Richard Buxton in plane geometry; Floyd Thompson general science; Elaine Pfannenstiel American history and Wendell Hinman, bookkeeping.
It was nice seeing Lora Bain in the post office on Monday.
Cory and Morgan Molloy spent this weekend in Topeka at a Molloy family reunion.
We understand Mason DeWitt is playing coach/ball. He even hit a home run the other evening and his nickname is Slick. Congrats.
Bill and Sharon Lovitt, Teresa Lovitt, Dodge City and Brad Lovitt, Phoenix attended graduation ceremonies for Rae Faiman in Columbia, Missouri on Saturday afternoon. She graduated from Rock Bridge Senior High School from a class of 531. She is the daughter of Scott and Lora Lovitt Faiman.

Carl and Velma Legleiters grandson, Lee Legleiter graduated Magna cum laude with duel degrees in marketing and management from Kansas State University on May 17, 2008. He plans to attend University of Kansas Law School in the fall. On May 24, 2008 Lee married Sarah Price at Marysville, Kansas. Carl and Velma attended the wedding along with Roger, Brenda, Lisa and Brian Legleiter. Roger and Brenda led the wedding march at the dance. Also in attendance were Haydn and Lynette (Legleiter) Buhr from Pauls Valley, Oklahoma. Lee is the son of Mike and Sharolyn Legleiter, Hays.
Madison Kirk celebrated her birthday on May 29. Sorry we missed it. She is the daughter of Nicole (Moran) and Clark Kirk of Burrton.
Randy Ryan of Dighton gave the museum a picture of a gathering at a school house in the area. We hope you can help us identify it at the museum during rodeo time. It appears to be families all dressed in their Sunday best. Some men are standing and sitting on the roof of the porch entryway. There is a bell on the top.

Keith and Billie North celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Saturday, May 31 at the VFW Hall in Ransom. The event was hosted by their children and families Larry, Danny, Joy and Ann. At the reception Danny sang Peg of My Heart, which is Keith and Billies song. Their granddaughter wore Billies wedding dress (an eyelet pink fitted dress in light pink). Harley and Donna North were their best man and maid of honor for their wedding they were in attendance. The couple was married on July 24, 1948. They would enjoy your cards. McCracken History Notes
June 1908
At the close of the public school in LaCrosse last Friday a program in the way of Field Day sports was given and general invitations were sent out over the county inviting other schools to come and compete for the prizes. Those present from this end of the county was the basketball and baseball teams from McCracken. The LaCrosse team was composed of Winnie Conrad, Grace ONeal, Grace Young, Grace Miller, Grace Robinson and Effie Greenway. McCracken team: Mattie Dutton, Carrie Darkes, Mamie Darkes, Beulah Wharton, Hattie Hicks, Pearl Reed and referee Miss Ida Darkes. The score was 15-5 for McCracken. In the baseball contest the McCracken lads won 11-4.
Jesse Elmore purchased this week both the St. John and Haufle farms west of town.

MHS received a plaque this week for taking 4th in the state scholarship contest.
Marion Fosters home run in the first inning with Claude Irvin on base started McCrackens Junior Leaguers off to a dazzling display of batting that overpowered LaCrosse Juniors 21-7. Box score is W. Irvin, C. Irvin, M. Foster, Mills, F. Foster, Elias, Conrad, Mills, Birdsong, Kueffer, Doerr and Stephens.

Miss Dorothy Elmore and her grandmother, Mrs. J. H. Morse of LaCrosse went by plane from Miami, Fla., to the Bahama Islands where they spent five days.
Jean Moran, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Moran, graduated Saturday from Mount St. Scholastica College at Atchison with a Bachelor of Arts and Mathematics degree. Margaret Shiney, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Shiney of McCracken, was graduated cum laude from Bryn Mawr College on June 1. She received the degree of Bachelor of Arts. Her major is in psychology.
Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Scott of Ransom announce the marriage of their daughter, Wilma, to Mr. Keith North of McCracken. The ceremony was performed Saturday evening, July 24, at Dighton with Rev. Bretz officiating. The bride and groom were attended by Miss Donna Scott and Mr. Harley North. A reception was held at the home of the brides parents immediately following ceremony. Following a brief honeymoon, Mr. and Mrs. North will make their home on a farm near McCracken upon completion of their new house.

The Brownell seniors and their sponsor, Guy Conner, left Friday afternoon on their sneak trip.
Homer Martz, a former coach in the McCrcken schoolds, died unexpectedly Saturday evening following a heart attack. He was district manager for the KT Oil Corporation and had lived in Quinter for a number of years. Survivors include the widow, Rose Marian; a daughter, Mrs. Karen Roesch; a son, Robert and one granddaughter.

Lavona Lou Peters and Arnold Suppes were married Saturday, June 1, at St. Michaels Church in LaCrosse.

USD 395 Board of Education decided to clear out and partition off the second floor of the Alexander school to conserve heat. They will move 4th grade to McCracken and the food will be catered from the McCracken kitchen.
Donna Greenway has been selected as sports writer for the Leader, the Fort Hays State student newspaper.

The Family Parlor is a short order café and recreational center owned and operated by Willetta Herdman. It is located in the north end of Main Street, formerly the Masonic Hall.
Mr. and Mr. Patrick Casey will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary with a Mass on June 11, 1988 at St. Marys Catholic Church in McCracken.

The lifeguards at the City Pool are Jackie Casey, Paula Greenway and Nikki Whittom.
A potluck was held at St. Marys rectory basement on June 6 to celebrate Father Eugene Kennys 45th anniversary as a priest.
