David Clapsaddle, Larned, was instrumental in marking the sites along the Fort Hays, Fort Dodge Road. In 1867 the railroad came to Hays City. It was then possible to send military supplies from Fort Riley to Hays and then across country to Fort Dodge by bull wagons. Thus the Fort Hays-Fort Dodge Road began. It was an artery which ran seventy-five miles southwest to join up with the established route of the Santa Fe Trail at Fort Dodge. It was used extensively until 1872, then it became a trail for the mail with a stop at Hampton. David came to McCracken and asked if I knew anything about Hampton, I said sure and took him there. He immediately said we need to place a marker at Hampton to indicate Big Timber Creek Crossing. He then had a stone post set there with a brass plate. Twenty markers were placed from Fort Hays to Fort Dodge. He wrote an article which is included about the Road in our history Hampton and the Big Timber Valley on the Fort Hays - Fort Dodge Trail, Our friend David died on April 28. He was a historian especially interested in the Santa Fe Trail. He received many awards from his volunteer work. We will miss him.
