McCracken was invaded with workers carrying rakes, chain saws and gloves to spruce up the park and golf course. A wooden two drawer file cabinet has been given to the McCracken Library (to hold the obituary cards) from Tim Rues.

A memorial has been given to McCracken beautification from Norman & Malinda Anderson in memory of Gerald & Emma Mae Anderson; Benjamin & Cora Anderson; Albert & Edith Norlin. Donations have been given from Sarah Casey, Lowell & Donna Cornwell; Leigh & Alicia Rues Barrett, Mary Beth Corrigan.
Susan Rebel bought a new kitchen stove that has shock absorbers on the oven door!!!
Bob & Della Miller & Addie Mills were Sunday guests of Marty & Tina Mills.
The Rodeo quilt is on display at the McCracken Library. Tickets are available for purchase, $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00.
Addie Mills was a Sunday afternoon visitor of Lee, Donna, Kelly, Trent and Andy Hansen. Addie also visited with Jack Klee while in Hays.
Beautification meeting was held Sunday afternoon at the library with members Jean Schutte, Anya Graber, Rose Diehl and Susan Davis. Austin McGaughey and Shirley Higgins were visitors. Discussion of the previous meetings was held as was the clean up of the park on Saturday. The next meeting will be held June 5.
If you didnt attend the salad supper at the UM Church Sunday evening, it was your loss. The youth performed three songs with the English handbells; the salads were scrumptious and Jan North gave an excellent program about her dear friend Carol who died from cancer.

Congratulations to Michelle Higgins and Mike Nelson on their marriage at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Grand Island, Nebraska on Saturday, April 30. Michelle is the daughter of Larry and Melody Higgins. McCracken Main Street Literary Society closed out their book club year with a trip via the Rush County Transportation Bus to Hays on Tuesday evening. We enjoyed Italian at Napoli's and then went to the movie theater to see "Water for Elephants". Most of us had read the book and were anxious to see the movie rendition. We were not disappointed. The ladies enjoyed Robert Pattison (of Twilight fame) and Reese Witherspoon. Those attending were Gary and Susan Rebel (our fearless leader), Roger (who tried to pass off Monopoly money to pay for his trip) and Norma McNair; Sandra Jacobs, Ruthanne Crawshaw, Shirley Higgins, Linda Seymour, Suzanne Randa and Carolyn Thompson. Our bus driver joined us for dinner and movie, our sincere thanks to her.
Deb Gaunt and Eric Scriven left Wednesday for Steelville, Missouri, to attend the concert of Richie Furay. They met their friends, Mark and Mary Skowron, from Chicago.
They also toured the St. James Wineyard and went antique shopping for Precious Moments.

Carolyn Thompson attended the 113th Annual Kansas DAR conference at the Capital Plaza Hotel in Topeka from Friday through Sunday. The attendance was 243 with members and guests. Speakers were Betty Albanez, Nebraska State Vice Regent at the National Defense banquet; Melissa Foutch, graduate and representative of Bacone Indian College in Oaklahoma; Lynn Forney Young, Recording Secretary General NSDAR, who told of famous women who were members of the DAR; Kerry Altenbernd, re-enactor who took on the role of John Brown. A memorial service was held on Sunday morning honoring all those members of the Kansas Daughters who passed away this past year. From Jonathan Gilbert Chapter, Patricia Teter Earl was honored. Patricia was a sister of Joyce Hunter. Joyce will be honored at the next conference.
Kansas History Note
An event having a most important bearing on the life and properity of Kansas was the passage of the Homestead Law. It was signed by President Lincoln and took effect on the lst of January, 1863. Within ten years thereafter twenty-six million acres of public lands were entered by homestead settlers. Title was granted a settler who held the 160 acres for five years.

May 1911
Decoration Day Program: Meet at the Hall at 10 a.m. and march to the cemetery in the following order: McCracken Band, Color Bearer and Color Guards, Rush Post and all Soldiers, flower girls and school children. Invitation to all Lodges to form in line and march to the cemetery. Citizens in private conveyances. On reaching the cemetery soldiers will encircle the Cenataph with flower girls in front. Address by Commander Stiffler. Music, Prayer, Reading "Our Hero Dead" - Miss Pearl Washaliski, Music. The soldiers will then march in order and decorate comrades graves after which will march back to hall and disband for dinner. After dinner meet at hall and march to M. E. Church for program.

Locust Grove School closed Friday with a community dinner. Miss Baldwin goes from here to Rice County where she is engaged to teach the first four grades in a two room school. Miss Lenore Ramsey has our school for next year.
The City has purchased a power lawn mower for use at the Park and Cemetery. It is one of the late models with a revolving propeller-like blade underneath and powered by a small gasoline engine.

Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Mills on the adoption of a son, Martin Lowell, born January 22, weighing six pounds and fourteen ounces.
The Kansas centennial was observed by the McCracken New Era club at their annual lunchelon Monday in the dining room at Jean's Cafe closing the club year. The members were dressed in centennial clothes. An outstanding costume was the black satin basque dress and dress bonnet of straw and lace worn by Mrs. Louise Klee, which was brought here from Pennsylvania by Mrs. Klee's grandmother, Mrs. Mary Hoffman and is 100 years old.

McCracken Grade and High School will have a combined graduation exercise on Thursday, May 14 in the high school auditorium. Kerrie Seltmann, valedictorian and Kevin Rourke, salutatorian will present the addresses. Msgr. Leahy will give the invocation. Eighth graders are Dixie Bott, Mark Brackney, John Moran, Sean Miller and Jim Hopkins. High School graduates are Kerrie Seltmann, Jeff McCormick, Kelly McKinney, Chris Brackney, Laura Casey, Raven Schwindt, Randy Conrad, Sandra Jacobs, Kevin Rourke and Wade Hinman
