LOOKING BACK:

1956 Ness City Towners will jump into their 1956 WCKL baseball season Sunday against Wakeeney.  This season will include several new members and a couple of returnees from service.  A couple of youngsters from McCracken, Vic Higgins and Bill Lovitt are expected to be regulars.  Higgins is a second baseman and Lovitt a shortstop.  Ronnie Leiker and Forrest “Doc” Kordisch will also join this season.  Towner members carried over from past seasons include Harold Pfannenstiel, Glenn and Guy Conner, Jess Abbott, Nick Wasinger, Herb Wick, Chet Irvin and Al Schwartzkopf.  The Ness Towners struck for eight runs in the opening frame here Sunday afternoon. The Towners had an 8-2 win going when Schwartzkipf retired in favor of Abbot in the sixth, but had the scare of their lives when the visitors unloaded for a five run spree in that frame to run the count to 8-7 before Chet Irvin came on to squelch the fire, and continued to hold the visitors in check the rest of the way.  The Towners chased across three insurance runs in the 8th.  Vic Higgins, youthful second-sacker for the Towners, was the hitting sensation of the afternoon, made chilly by an overcast sky aided and abetted by a brisk north wind carrying a light mist at times.  The McCracken youth banged out five hits, all singles, in as many times at bat, driving in three runs and scoring a trio of counters.  Schwartzkopf got credit for the win for the Towners, Gaschler was the loser for Wakeeney.
