Our friend, May Jane Kamieniecki, of Manning, Alberta, Canada, wrote.  She said the geese and swans are back, but can't find much open land or ponds to nest or feed.  They had a long cold winter with lots of snow.  It was a slow winter in the oil patch and many of the businesses are closing and families moving away to bigger places.  They had three young people in the community with the HlNl flu who have died.  They have 350 cows to calf out and have an average of ten calves a day.  Her brother had a set of triplet’s calves which are all well and growing.

Kansas History Note

From June 1859 until November 1860, there was a widespread drouth in Kansas.  Vegetation perished save the prairie grass, which during the early spring and midsummer flourished along the ravines and creeks, and even when dried up by the hot winds, cured suddenly into hay and so afforded feed for cattle.  Over 30,000 emigrants left the country west of the Missouri spreading news of the disaster.  Aid was organized in the East.  More than 8,000,000 pounds of provision and clothing, $85,000 in money and 2,500 bushels of seed wheat were received by those in need.
