Janice ‘Jan’ L. Wess McLeland, 66, died April 11, 2009 in Satanta.  She was the daughter of Gilbert and Marie Sweeney Wess.  Her husband Larry, son Jeff; daughter Lisa Hatley; brother, Greg Wess; sisters, Mary Schneider and Pat Wess and six grandchildren survive her.  Her mother was a 1937 graduate of McCracken High School.
 
Sunday, April 5th there was a golf meeting held at the American Legion.  Present were Roger and Norma McNair, Arky and Diana McNair, Bob Fear, Babe Gilbert, Bruce and Sue Davis, and Richard Showalter. Tournament dates were set and all agreed that fees will stay the same as last year, $5.00. A fried chicken dinner is planned for April 19th at the Legion.  It begins at 12:00 p.m. with Arky doing the cooking.  There will be a work day May 2nd, so please come if you can. The golf members visited with Tony Rues about the vandalism on the golf course.  Signs will be posted GOLF CARTS ONLY; GLASS IS NOTALLOWED ON THE COURSE; NO TRESPASSING signs will be posted on 3 locations. There are a lot of problems with people driving and tearing up the course with motorcycles and vehicles. Please show some responsibility. If you are old enough to drive you are old enough to know better.  We want everyone to be able to enjoy golfing and have a fun season.
 
Congratulations to Tyrel Elias and Tina Harris for ‘tying’ the knot.  They were married April 4, 2009 at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.  Ty said ‘we beat all odds and she said I do!!’ (lol). 
There is a dance at St. Michael’s Parish Hall in LaCrosse, on Saturday, April 18th beginning around 8:00 or 8:30.  All their friends are invited.
 
Don’t forget the upcoming rodeo meeting on Sunday, April 19th beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Fire Station.
 
I think it was Nap Derr who told me if it rained on Easter Sunday, it would rain the next 7 Sundays. 
 
Roy and Phyllis Conrad met Albert and Louise Zordel in Ransom Easter Sunday and enjoyed dinner at the VFW.
Arlyn and Jan North hosted Easter dinner with guests Eunice North, Ted and Shawna North and boys; Heath and Paula North and boys; Daryl and Linda North, Adam and Tricia.
 
Easter guests of Arlene Rues were Ron, Cathy, Catherine, Alex and Johnny Casey, Rose and Les Diehl, Tony, Tomi, Shelby, Emma, Kate and Will Rues.
 
Mark your calendars on Saturday, May 2, 2009 for the 6th annual U.T.I.C.A. Tractor, Car Show and Parade.  There is a $5.00 registration fee for all entries in the parade.  It will be from 9:00 – Noon.  Coffee and donuts provided.  Plaques will be awarded to the top ten tractors; top ten cars-pickups; top three motorcycles; top three horses – horse drawn buggies; top three hit-n-miss engines and top float; a craft show is held in the grade school gym; miniature horse drawn buggy rides for the children; the Ness County Amusement Company will bring rides; a cake walk and many other activities.  A free BBQ Meal for the first 350 people – 5:00 in the park.  Please plan to attend.

An early 100th birthday party was held for Grace Thompson in LaCrosse on Saturday in LaCrosse. Congratulations to Albert and Doris Ruff Oller on their 50th wedding anniversary which they will celebrate April 19 by repeating their vows. Cards may be sent to them at 215 Avenue N., Holyrood, KS 67450.
 
Easter guests at the home of Shirley Higgins were all her family, kids and grandchildren.
 
Whitey Wierman  brought some items for the Jail/Museum.  They include a postcard from William Spomer, former dentist at McCracken to James Wierman.  It reads “Your six month dental exam should be in the month of August.  However, I have decided to discontinue my practice as of Jun 17, 1977, so therefore, I will be unable to continue your dental treatment.  I urge you to contact another dentist and explain your need for a six month exam and to ask for an appointment.  It has been my pleasure to have been of service to you and I thank you.”  It was written from Larned, Kansas, where he moved.
Whitey also brought the bulletin from St. Theresa’s Church in Dighton that tells of Father Mike Helms First Mass on Sunday May 27, 1990.   Another item was a Hawaii Calendar from 1988 from his friend First Lieutenant George E. Iwamoto.   He was a PFC in the Army prior to Pearl Harbor.  They put him and his parents in a Detention Camp for Japanese in California and took him out of the service.  They gave him the opportunity to fight for his country so he re-entered the Army.  He served with Whitey in the 16th Army Division in Europe.  He also served in the Korean War where he stepped on a mine and was handicapped afterwards.  He used two hand crutches.  He died three years ago.
 
Francis and Julia Zeller went to Kansas City on Saturday.  Sunday, Monday and Tuesday they attended the International Square Dance Callers Convention.  Francis was a charter member of the organization that was formed in 1974.  They have attended all the conventions except one year, which was last year when he had a broken hip.  Julia has attended all but one and she was acknowledged as the only partner who had attended all of them with Francis.   There were five callers from overseas, one from Spain, one from Germany, two from Japan and a girl from Switzerland.   Approximately 250 callers were in attendance. On Saturday night Paula and Gino Corte hosted for a family gathering.  Those present were Andrea and Bryan Ring, Martin and Mary Higgins, Joe Higgins and Cindy, Carrie Higgins, John and Melanie Zeller, Sarah Urban and Kyle, Rachel and Lance Legleiter and Haydn, Janice Graham and son J. D. Blosser, Bill Zeller and Julia Zeller.
 
Lydia Quigg, 87, died April 6, 2009,  at Great Bend.  Son, Michael and his wife Lydia, Mercedes, Texas are survivors.  Inurnment will be at the Great Bend Cemetery.  Michael and Lydia lived here in Cecilia Gilbert’s house.
 
Ruby Trout, 91, died April 5, 2009 at LaCrosse.  Her granddaughter, Rhonda and husband Peter Derr live here.  Great-grandchildren are Dylan and Benjamin Derr and great-great granddaughter, Makenzie Rae.  Burial was in Nekoma Union Township Cemetery.
 
Carolyn Oller has given the Jail/Museum a collection of sunflower items.  They will enhance the beauty of the museum.
 
Francis Klee has been released from Wesley Medical Center.  He is staying at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Trenna Klee in Wichita.  Tuesday and Wednesday visitors were Maurice Klee, Council Grove, Cathy Klee Ledbetter, Houston, Texas, Karen Klee Beebe, Wichita, Julie Hill, Park City and Addie Mills, McCracken.
 
Easter guests of Carolyn Thompson were Mike, Susan and Shannon Keith, Galen Allen, Al and Judy Hugh and Ben Thompson.
 
Congratulations to Bill Greenway on being re-elected to the City Commission.  We thank him for all his service to the community.
 
Our sympathy to the family of Mary Lou Hall who died in a crash on the Smoky Hill River Bridge at Schoenchen on Saturday night. They were enroute to Nebraska to the home of their granddaughter for Easter.  Mary Lou was an historical researcher and she has written many Ness County books.  The book Requiem included the McCracken Cemetery and was used as an aid in preparing the new directory at the cemetery.  She was a guest for many years with the ladies of Jonathan Gilbert Chapter NSDAR and hoped to join in the near future.

April 1899
W. F. Grumbein took the election returns to LaCrosse Tuesday morning, returning on No. 121 at noon.
 
W. S. McCaskey, assessor, has been around this week asking questions and trying to find out what everybody has.
 
J. A. Yawger purchased the SE/4 Section 1-18-20 for $700.  This is near Joe Wharton’s.
 
April 1909
The annual school meeting for District 28 was held at the school house Friday afternoon.  Only a few were present whereas every patron of the school should have been present.  Twenty-six hundred dollars was voted for the coming year for maintenance and improvements.  An eight months term of school was voted.  Francis Ryan was elected director and John R. Lovitt clerk.

Pete Ream is the new proprietor of the meat market in the Leader store.
 
Lawrence Curtis and Elsie Morey were married March 23.
 
April 1939
Mr. and Mrs. Glen Gordon this week announced the marriage of their daughter, Lillian, to Claude Irvin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Irvin, which took place a year ago, April 21, 1938 in Colby.  Both young people are seniors in McCracken High School.
 
Jimmy Caton and his big orchestra will be at Barnett’s, Brownell, Saturday night, April 22.  On the following Saturday night, Jim Oliveras and his band will play.
 
Every county has at least one driver’s license agent, but they have been notified that their services will not be needed after April 15.  No examination will be required for the renewal of a license except upon complaint of the state highway patrol.
 
April 1959
Approximately 50 persons visited the McCracken Library Saturday afternoon.  Refreshments of cookies, coffee and soft drink were served.
 
April 1979
Carla Taylor and Bill Strobach were married April 21 at Wesley Chapel in Wichita.
 
The Pro-Art Music Club performed “Easter Song” in the United Methodist Church.  Judy Moran and Lorraine Norlin are members.
