Addie Mills was a last Thursday visitor of Jack Klee at Hays.
 
Georgia Mills, 88, daughter of Robert J. and Hannah Derr Sloan, died Saturday at the hospital in Watertown, South Dakota.  Funeral services were Thursday, April 1, 2010 at the First Presbyterian Church in Raymond.  Burial was in the Prairie Valley Cemetery near Raymond, South Dakota beside her beloved husband. 
 
Emerson Sloan, Kearney, Nebraska and Steve Sloan, McCracken, attended the funeral services for Georgia Mills.
 
Wilma Jacobs, Mary Ann Quinonesa and Addie Mills enjoyed the Ladies Lenten Salad Luncheon on Wednesday at St. Michael’s Parish Center in LaCrosse.  Others from McCracken in attendance included Pat Derr, Twila Higgins, Marge Moran and Gladys Hinman.
 
The McCracken pool will sponsor a fried chicken dinner, Sunday noon April 11th at the McCracken Community Building.
 
Dinner guests of Roy & Phyllis Conrad at Boondocks were Neil, Rhonda,
Chandler and Ashleigh Allen of Wichita and also Sylvester Conrad.  Afternoon guest
was Randy Conrad.
 
Easter weekend guests of Gladys & Wendell Hinman were:Tonya & Wade Hinman & Zaccary; Sheila & Greg Hinman; Jeffrey Hinman, Jessica Hinman & friend Sam; Laura & Ray Wierman & Jerod. Saturday was a work day trimming trees in the shelter belt and on Sunday after church a dinner was enjoyed at the Boondocks Restaurant in McCracken.
 
Tanner Higgins, Hutchinson freshman, is a member of the Hutch High Varsity baseball team.  He plays short stop. 
 
Maj. Jim Slemp, Iraq, will be arriving in Lawton, Oklahoma, April 12.  During the past 10 months, Major Slemp has served as the JE Family Readiness Officer. In addition to his regular duties as the Human Resources Officer, MAJ Slemp also assumed the responsibility to assist with information flow to the members of the J3 and their
families. In support of the monthly newsletter, he collected articles from the divisions/directorates and supplied great stories about life at Camp Victory.  Carolyn and Shirley each received an e-mail newsletter from Jim every month.

Lillian McGaughey celebrated her second birthday on Saturday at the home of her parents, Aaron and Lesley McGaughey in LaCrosse.  The dinner and birthday celebration was attended by family and friends.  In the evening Jackson Aaron McGaughey, son of Aaron and Lesley, was baptized at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in LaCrosse at the Holy Saturday services.
 
The Rush County Nursing Home residents are involved in a project called their Bucket List.  Orville Durand wanted to come to McCracken to eat at Boondocks and see his dog Pepper.  On Thursday evening, the transportation van driven by Jill brought a group of residents to Boondocks.  Deb Gaunt and Eric Scriven joined Orville at the dinner and Bernadine Gray was joined by Ruth and Ron Crawshaw, Paula and Stephanie Greenway.  After the dinner they stopped at Orville’s house to see Pepper. 
 
Out of town relatives who attended the 80th birthday party for Jean Schutte were Jeff and Julie McCormick, Hutchinson; Frank and Kim McCormick and family, Maize; Jim and Shelly McCormick, Garden Plain, Kris McCormick, Hays; Ted and Lisa McCormick and family, Colwich; Mark McCormick, Merriam; Tom and Shannon McCormick and family, Andale; Alex and Wanda McCormick, Rush Center, Ann Barnes, El Dorado; Donna Nuttle, Ellis; and Barb and Jim Hoskins, Great Bend.
 
Chris Hall McCracken, Bayfield, Colorado, was here on Wednesday searching for McCracken ancestors.  He was interested in the founders of the town.  He purchased a copy of the first McCracken History and plans to organize a McCracken Family Reunion in McCracken in the future.  For the next two and a half months however, he is on vacation and will travel to North Carolina to visit McCracken relatives.
 
Lucille Feezor, 95, died March 10, 2010 at WaKeeney.  She married John Feezor on May 6, 1935.  He died March 28, 2001.  Burial was in the WaKeeney City Cemetery.  John and Lucille were friends of the late Frank and Drewie McGaughey.  They were square dance friends.
 
Through the efforts of Suzanne Randa, E-Bay and Tim Rues, the museum was able to purchase a picture post card of the Brass Band of McCracken.  It was postmarked August 23, 1909 and sent to Mrs. Lizzie Rankin, Pollard, Kans. It was sent by Roland (we think Grumbein).  A picture of the band is published on page 67 of our first history book, but the picture was taken from a different angle.  This picture was taken from the east side of Main Street.  The men are standing in the same positions but the picture is a close up.  The person selling the post card picture was Stuart Butterfield of Wilmington, Delaware.
 
A country school picture has been donated to the museum by Thayne and Machree Jones.  The teacher is Stella Hill Ryan.  We will let you know when we get the students identified.
 
Our sympathy to the family of Robert L. Foster, 58, LaCrosse, who died March 31, 2010 at his home.  He was born January 8, 1952 in LaCrosse to Doyle ‘Freddie’ and Alvina M. (McCormick) Foster.  He was a 1970 graduate of McCracken High School.  He attended Barton County Community Junior College in Great Bend directly after high school.  In 1974 he moved to Atlanta, Georgia and enrolled in the Art Institute of Atlanta where he received an Associate of Arts Degree in Commercial Art in 1977.  Upon graduation Bob was employed by Atlanta Ad Graphics as a full-time commercial artist and illustrator.  In 1979 he moved to Dallas, Texas and continued to paint supporting himself as a musician traveling throughout the United States.  In 1986 he resumed his studies at Fort Hays State University majoring in painting and minoring in sculpture.  In 1988 Bob traveled to southern Italy where he painted, exhibited and sold works in both Italy and Germany.  Bob returned to Fort Hays State University in 1992 and completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in 1993 and began work on his Master of Fine Arts Degree in 1994.  His graduate catalog was designed by he and William Zeller and the photos of Bob’s art work were taken by William Zeller.  The paintings included in his Master’s booklet were The Painter, The Sculptor, Locals, The Gerhard Family, Studio, Bill and Anna, Vina, Girl, Bar Scene, Frank, Marriage and The Sweeper.  His Exhibitions included the Studio Gallery in Atlanta, Georgia in 1976 and 1977; Sharin Fakur Gallery, Frankfurt, Germany in 1989; Teatro Comunale, Reggio Calabria, Italy in 1990, Illustration for the book ‘Requiem Per Una Citta” by Annamaria Chirico, Reggio Calabria, Italy in 1991; Hays Public Library, 1992; Smoky Hill Art Exhibition, Hays, in 1995 and the MFA Thesis Exhibition, Moss-Thorns Galley, Hays in 1997.  He received his Masters of Fine Arts in 1997.  He was preceded in death by his parents.  He is survived by brothers, Kenneth A., McCracken; Frank W., Florissant, Colo., and Fredrick D. “Fritz” Foster, Reggio, Calabria, Italy. Moving services were held at St. Mary Catholic Church, McCracken on Monday morning officiated by Father Rene Labrador.  Father had taken communion to Bob every Thursday for the last two years.

The Schlegel children and the Myers children have left school.  Schlegel’s have moved to Bison and the Myer family has moved to the country.
 
Miss Margaret Lovitt of Sedgwick, Kansas, is visiting relatives here, having returned home with her grandfather, Mr. James Start, who was visiting Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Lovitt at that place.

Shack Stephens was elected city commissioner.
 
Ralph Elmore sold Rumley 15-30 tractors to Noble Campbell and Sam Dugan this week.
 
April 1940
Bard Stephens and Franklin Farwell, Fort Hays Kansas State College students, attended the KU - Indiana U. final game of the National Intercollegiate basketball tournament at Kansas City of Saturday.
 
Mrs. Paul Walker gave a birthday party at her home last Thursday in honor of her daughter, Pauline.  The group of children played games from four until six in the afternoon.  Refreshments were served to the following guests:  Johnny Elmore, Bennie Thompson, Nathalie Dugan, Kenneth Thompson, Joan Ryan, Guy Conner, Phyllis Cheney, Donald Greenway, Betty Joy Twiselton, Dorothy Klug, Robert Mullenix, Mildred Kraus, Junior Sperry, Joann Juvenal, Warren Irvin, Glenn Conner, Dicky Shiney, Dorothy Elmore, Oren Webster, Tommy Birdsong, Blanche Pratt, Johnny Walker, Miss Margaret Lovitt, Norma Jean Fear, Helen Higgins and Bonnie Foster.

Norlin’s store was broken into Thursday night and $5.00 was taken from the cash register.  The thieves entered the store by breaking the glass in the rear door and turning the lock.
 
Dight House will be employed to teach fifth and sixth grades the next school year.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Lee Fear will return as custodians and Etta Irvin and Bessie Davis as cooks for the McCracken schools.

The Kansas Artist’s Post Card Series 11 will be shown at the Michael Jilg studio of McCracken from April 11-15.
