Kansas History Note

"A History of Kansas" was written by Noble L. Prentis and published in 1909.  Twenty-eight books of reference were used in compiling the book.  Included in the book is the Organic Act.  On May 30, 1854, congress passed an act entitled "An Act to Organize the Territories of Nebraska and Kansas".  President Pierce appointed Andrew H. Reeder, of Pennsylvania,  Governor.  The Constitution of the State of Kansas was adopted at Wyandotte, July 29, 1859, Ratified by the People, October 4, 1959 and went into Operation, January 29, 1861.  The Preamble and boundaries:  We, the PEOPLE OF KANSAS, grateful to Almighty God for our civil and religious privileges, in order to insure the full enjoyment of our rights as American citizens, do ordain and establish this CONSTITUTION OF THE STATE OF KANSAS, with the following boundaries, to wit:  Beginning at a point on the western boundary of the State of Missouri, where the thirty-seventh parallel of north latitude crosses the same; thence running west on said parallel to the twenty-fifth meridian of longitude west from Washington; thence north on said meridian to the fortieth parallel of north latitude; thence east on said parallel to the western boundary of the State of Missouri; thence south, with the west boundary of said State, to the place of beginning.

There will be more spring crops put in this community that there ever was before.  The oats crop, which is already in, is very large.  It is now a foregone conclusion that the wheat crop is going to be cut down considerably, and farmers are trying to recover by putting in lots of spring stuff.

The old school building is being rapidly demolished.  It is one of the old landmarks of McCracken, being erected soon after the town started.
