Twila and Hoop Higgins have given a Christmas card to the Jail/Museum. It is from Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Farwell and Mr. and Mrs. Lyle W. Farwell, McCracken, Kansas. It read “With all good wishes for a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year” along with a shield of America and an eagle. The message was “May ever the stars smile down from above on our friends and homes in the land we love.” The Farwells were in business here 100 years ago.

The final Bleeding Kansas 2016 series will be held Sunday March 6 at Lecompton at 2:00 p.m. It is “Colonel Henry Titus: The Osama Bin Laden of the Abolitionist Press” by Professor Antonio de la Cova of the University of South Caroline at Columbia, South Carolina.

Deb Goodrich, Topeka and Jake Bauer, Oakley, were in McCracken over the weekend. They stayed at the home of Les and Rose Diehl. Deb worked with Rose at the radio station in Topeka. Deb is the author of the following books: Civil War in Kansas (a signed copy is at the museum); Kansas Forts and Bases, Kansas Music, The Day Dixie Died, The Darkest Dawn and Stories in Stone. She is the co-host of Around Kansas and Special Projects. You may watch Around Kansas on KSCW TV 33 at 6:00 a.m. on Wednesdays. They celebrate the history, culture and business innovation of the people of Kansas. They take the back roads and the main highways to see the places, meet the people and learn about the events that shape our great state. The website www.aroundkansas.com can be accessed for previous programs. While in McCracken they visited the Jail/Museum, Hampton and St. Mary's Catholic Church. Deb's recent lecture was entitled “Our Charley, Charles Curtis 'A Boy Forced to Choose'.” She will hope to bring it to McCracken. Jake is in the process of setting up a Cavalry Museum in Russell Springs.
