Addie Mills was the guest of honor for birthday cake and ice cream last Friday evening at the home of Marty, Tina and Rashell Mills.
Saturday visitors of Joann Micheli were Jim and Ruth Ellen Steitz, Great Bend; Gail Drotts, Ft. Isabel, Texas. They all enjoyed lunch at 4-Corners Restaurant in LaCrosse. Ruth Ellen & Gail are daughters of Lloyd & Ruth VanWinkle.
Chris Rohr was an official at the Hoisington-Lyons basketball game Friday night. He is a nephew of James Schafer.
Thayne and Machree Jones returned home last week after spending time with Chris and Tessa Jones is Wichita.
Erik Gifford, husband of the late Joy Mills, died Monday night at Richmond, Virginia. Graveside services will be held at the McCracken City Cemetery on Friday afternoon March 2nd. A memorial service was held at Christiansburg, Virginia on Saturday with Eriks mother, sisters, brothers and other family members present.
Jeff Hurd has accepted the job as head strength coach for the San Diego Chargers in California.
Lorraine Ryan, Shirley Higgins, Bill and Sharon Lovitt, Kayla, Lindsey and Nicole Tacha and Courtney Waldschmidt attended the Hoisington-Lyons basketball game in Hoisington Friday night. The Hoisington seniors were honored between the girls and boys basketball games. Kyra Horesky was one of the seniors honored as was Cassandra Nye, niece of Melanie Zeller.
Tessa Jacobs was a Tuesday Sunday guest of her grandmother, Priscilla Jacobs. She was visiting because of parent teacher conferences. They met her mother, Amy Jacobs in Lyons where they enjoyed lunch and Tessa went home with her mother.
Kate Ryan underwent bladder surgery last Monday morning in Hays and returned home that afternoon. Her daughter, Pat Miles, Tulsa, was here while she was recuperating.
A memorial has been given to the McCracken Alumni in memory of Willis Redding from Merle and Maxine Josefiak.
The Hoisington High School girls basketball was defeated by Lakin Monday night in Lakin.

A rodeo Meeting was held last Monday with Rod Pratt, Scott City, President of the KPRA. Tom Prosser, Bet McCormick, Brett Gilbert, Mike & Jerilyn Stull, Coleen Kerns, Ivan Janke, Jean Schutte, Priscilla Jacobs, Brenda Legleiter, Brian Legleiter, Gary Barnes, Roger Legleiter, Mark Brackney, and Brenda Boese were present. McCracken Rodeo received Committee of the Year Award for the second straight year. The next meeting will be held March 19 so mark your calendars.
Rush County was pummeled with severe weather last weekend as thunderstorms, hail, wind guests up to 75 miles per-hour, sleet and snow blasted the area. A tornado watch was issued Friday evening. Visibility was extremely limited at times with highways closed throughout Western Kansas on Saturday, including westbound I-70 from Salina to the Colorado line.

Ron and Ruth Crawshaw attended William Greenways basketball game on Friday evening. On Saturday Stephanie played. She tied it up at 18-18 at the end of regulation. It took four overtimes for Ness to beat her team 19-18.
A memorial service was held at Good Samaritan Center in Hays on Friday afternoon for Stella Hugh. Byoung Lee, assistant pastor of the Hays First United Methodist Church conducted the services with a special tribute by Judy Hugh. Following the service those attending watched a video of Stella and Ruth as they told of their experiences in Hawaii at a golf tournament. The video showed the sparkling personalities of the ladies. A memorial has been given to the Jail/Museum in memory of Stella Hugh.
Wilfrid and Twila Higgins and Babe, Arlene and Brett Gilbert attended the funeral service for Richard Moses on Monday in Salina.
James Seltman died recently. He was cremated and his ashes will be scattered over his farm. He married Audrey Ratlief on August 22, 1951 at Nekoma. He was preceded in death by his wife. Survivors include sons, Brian, Nekoma and Jeff, Alexander , daughters, Karin Casey, Hanston, Julie Huxman, Russell, and Tricia Seltman, Salina.
Justin Dennis, son of Cameron and Jamie Dennis, Salina, participated in a wrestling tournament on Saturday, February 24 in Ellsworth. He is six years old and is in the 43 lb and under weight class. He took first place in the tournament. He wrestles for the Salina Kids Wrestling Club. They have 70 members. This is his first year in the program. He is the great-nephew of Carolyn Thompson. She attended along with Mike and Shannon Keith, Danny Dennis, Cameron and Jamie Dennis, Mackenzie Haas, Keaton Dennis, Wilbert and June Neiman and Jim and Cheryl Muth.
Carolyn Thompson attended the third and fourth grade music program, An All-American Anthology at Ellsworth on Tuesday. Shannon Keith and Mika Ptacek sang a duet with the Pledge of Allegiance.
Candidate Joann Micheli, Sr. Martina, Jean Schutte and Twila Higgins attended Joans Rite of Election at Our Lady of Guadalupe Cathedral in Dodge City on Sunday afternoon conducted by Bishop Ronald Gilmore.
McCracken History Notes
March 1887
On March 1 McCracken was visited by her first blaze, principal sufferer being J. M. Temple who had just completed a building and about half of its contents were destroyed.
The Missouri Pacific engineers arrived Wednesday and have commenced a survey to the state line.
March 1907
Mrs. Charles McGaughey and Henry Klee went to Louisville, Colorado Monday night, called there by the serious illness of their mother.
Mr. John Fudge expired at his home in this city Sunday morning. He came to Rush County in the spring of 1878. He was born near Dowls, Glenmorganshire, Wales, in April 1832. In the year 1854 he came with his mother and brothers to America, settling in Johnstown, Pa. He married Catherine Evans and to this union nine daughters survive. Burial was in the McCracken City Cemetery.

Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity at Fort Hays Kansas State College recently held formal initiation for Francis Lovitt, freshman from McCracken. Lola Louise Marvin is also a student in Hays.
The Rustic Tavern is staging a cribbage tournament this weekend. There will be five tables and each will play three games.
March 1947
Slick, icy highways were given most of the blame for wrecks in Rush County Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Steve Padilla were returning when their car skidded and overturned at 2:00 a.m. Friday morning a mile east and two south of McCracken. Both sustained bruises and lacerations and Mr. Padilla suffered several fractured ribs. Padilla is a section foreman for the Missouri Pacific railroad. Cecil Brackney, driving a truck for Del Klema collided with a car driven by O. S. Rogers, on the curve north of LaCrosse on highway 183. No one was injured but damages were about $135.
Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Littler on the birth of a daughter Sunday afternoon, March 2, at St. Anthonys hospital in Hays. The child weighed seven and one-half pounds and has been named Carol Kay.

Miss Lola Jean Oller, Fort Hays State college student from McCracken, will teach in the primary grades of the Hutchinson school system next fall.

Pvt. First Class James D. Muller, USMC, was injured February 19 in the vicinity of DeNang in Vietnam. He sustained fragmentation wounds to both legs from a hostile explosive device.

Mr. and Mrs. Bob Derr celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary at the city auditorium in LaCrosse March 5.

McCracken Chapter No. 261, Order of Eastern Star, met February 23 with Worthy Matron, Ruthetta Irvin, and Worthy Patron, Chester Ivin, presiding. A gift was presented to Mr. and Mrs. Bob House in honor of their recent marriage. Several games of pitch were played.

Congratulations to Lori and Morgan Rose on the birth of a son, Evan Walker Rose, born February 24. He is the grandson of Karen (Walker) and Larry Clark. Great-grandmother is Grace (Walker) Thompson.
Joshua and Ellen Moran were baptized at St. Annes Catholic Church in Olmitz on Sunday, February 23 by Father Ultan Murphy.
