The 2nd Chance thrift shop in LaCrosse is in need of a new roof.  If every Rush County resident could/would donate $5 or $10 toward this project, it could happen.
The shop gives monies to lots of projects and events in the County. 
 
I watched the high lights of the 1980 US Olympic hockey team Sunday afternoon win the unbelievable game against the Russian team 4-3 and against Finland 4-2 for the gold medal. These games took place in Lake Placid.  It gave me goose bumps just like it did the first time. . .sh
 
Addie Mills was a Tuesday evening guest of Marty and Tina Mills for ice cream and cake in honor of Addie’s birthday.
 
Joe and Kay Slemp, James and Billie Slemp enjoyed supper at Boondocks on Friday evening in honor of James’ birthday.
 
Jessica Shapiro is a member of the American Cheer and Dance National Competition. They performed in Palm Springs, California February 6-7, 2010.  Jessie competes for Cheer Xperience from El Dorado Hills, California on a Senior Coed Level 3 team.  There are 12 members on her squad and they took first place in their division.  Cheer Xperience Senior Level 1 team with 20 squad members also took first place in their division.  60 teams competed from Arizona, California, Hawaii and Nevada. Jessica is the daughter of Martin and Cathie Ryan Shapiro, granddaughter of Lorraine Ryan.
 
Austin McGaughey is the new owner of Jim Schafer’s home. He will be a new resident on Main Street.
 
Sue Davis hosted a mini celebration of Aunt Addie’s birthday at Boondocks on Thursday evening.  Marty and Tina Mills and Bob House were also in attendance.
 
Congratulations to Lauren Sewell on the birth of a baby boy, Clayton Matthew, February 16, 2010 in Hays.
 
Congrats to Priscilla Jacobs who enjoyed a birthday supper at Boondocks for her birthday, February 11th. Present were members of her family, Sandra Jacobs, Sean Peters, Mitchell Jacobs and Terrie Lasater.
 
Evelyn Cosby treated Addie Mills to lunch at 4-Corners Café on Thursday.  Addie said “Aren’t birthdays grand!”
 
Neal, Amy and Jaden Jacobs, Wichita, braved the snow and ice and were guests of Priscilla Jacobs this weekend.

A note from Doug Elias tells us about his daughter Maggie: She had a blast in the snow when we came back to Kansas for Christmas!  She started softball a couple of weeks ago and her first game was this weekend. She went 4 for 4.  I escorted her to a Father/Daughter Valentines Dance during Valentines Day weekend and I chaperoned her field trip to Lowry Park Zoo last week and had a grand time.  Staci and I took her to Walt Disney World for her birthday and gave her a treat: hair, make-up, and nails at the Bippity, Boppity, Boutique in Cinderella's Castle then we ate dinner at the Royal Table. 
 
Arline Rues is ‘making her wish come true’ by participating in the Messiah practice in Lindsborg a couple of nights a week.
 
Was nice visiting with Janet Herdman at the McCracken Library Tuesday afternoon.
 
Sharon Irvin, Velma Legleiter, Carol Weber and daughter Callie, Paulette Zeller, Susan Davis, Shirley Higgins, Lorraine Ryan, Zelda Brack, Carolyn Thompson and Galen Allen enjoyed “The Drowsy Chaperone” at Beech-Schmidt in Hays Tuesday evening.
 
There have been patrons from Goodland, Wichita, Newton, Hill City, Sublette, Hutchinson, Scott City, Wakeeney, Hays and our surrounding neighbors Ransom, Brownell, LaCrosse, Bison, Alexander, Bazine, and Otis that have enjoyed the great food at Boondocks.  What a boost to our ‘fair city’!! 
 
Ty Elias was in Omaha, Nebraska from Sunday the 14th to Friday the 19th for some advanced Trimble training.
 
Congrats to Maddie Rues who participated in the spelling bee for Cair Paivelle School in Topeka.  She is a 6th grader and made it through the 3rd round!
 
Happy Birthday, Orville.  90 years young.  Orville was born on February 29 – a leap year.
 
A card shower is requested for Orville Durand for his 90th birthday.  Cards may be sent to the Rush County Nursing Home, 701 West 6th, LaCrosse, KS 67548.  There is to be an Open House at the Nursing Home on Sunday, February 28 from 2-4.  Come and say hello.
 
Linda Dale, Littleton, Colorado, visited her father, Emerson Sloan, at Kearney, Nebraska. They attended the Border Collie show while she was there.
 
Several days ago Eric Scriven saw eleven turkeys go through his yard.

McCracken History Notes
February 1910
Staten Lovitt has been using a King drag on the streets for the last few days which has smoothed out the wrinkles and bumps and gives the streets a solid fine appearance.
 
Jay Swanzy started a new porch on the Lovitt residence this week which will be a neat and commodious improvement.
 
February 1920
John McGaughey purchased a new Ford from the Oakley Motor Co. of McCracken this week.
 
Lenora Elizabeth Casey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Pat Casey died February 23.  She was 11 months of age.
 
February 1940
A yearbook will be published this year entitled “The Mirror”.  It will have blue covers with silver printing.
 
Paul Healy is a new junior at MHS.
 
February 1960
So far in 1960, 20 inches of snow has been recorded.
 
Utica knocked McCracken out of district tournament by a one point loss, 59-58.
 
February 1980
Ellen Davis is a student in the Creative Dramatics class at Barton County.  She was featured in the RCN.
 
In overtime action against Sacred Heart of Ness City, the McCracken 8th grade boys won the Qua-Valley League championship.  Team members  - Jay Brack, Kenny Hughes, Jeff Scheuerman, Shawn McKinney, Chad Herdman, Richard Wittman, Gary Barnes.  Coach is Bob Bearly.  Jeff Scheuerman scored 26 points, Chad Herdman 8, Jay Brack 4 and Gary Barnes 2.
