Congratulations to George Hunter on his 90th birthday. A dessert reception was held for him on Sunday evening. George had a German Chocolate birthday cake made by Diana McNair and ice cream. Those attending were Sandra Jacobs, Eric Scriven, Rob, Helena and Austin McGaughey, Shirley Higgins, Carolyn Thompson, Lynnette Doornbos and Wendy Wu.
Congratulations to William and Theresa Greenway on their marriage on Saturday, February 20, at the First United Methodist Church in Hays. They are at home in McCracken.
The 20th Annual Bleeding Kansas 2016 Series at Lecompton is scheduled for February 28. It is entitled Border War Ballads: Territorial and Civil War Songs of Kansas and Missouri by historian and educator Dr. Carl Graves.
Erica Gilbert, LaCrosse High School Junior basketball team member, was pictured in the Hays Daily News on Sunday. She is the daughter of Brett and Holly Gilbert. We wish her and the entire team a successful tournament experience.
Kevin Dreiling, Bennington, Kansas, was in town last week. He maintains the Verizon Tower here by McCracken. He stopped by the Jail/Museum to see our Paper Moon display. He also has a collection of Paper Moon items.
Lynn Kochenower brought the Jail/Museum a picture that was at the Santa Fe Mercantile Antique Shop at Pawnee Rock. The owner is Linda McCowan. The picture is of a fire at a lumber yard taken at night. On the back it says 1912 lumber yard fire by McCracken Photographer. Does anyone know about this fire?
There was a fascinating story about a family who had three sets of twins in the Ellsworth Independent Reporter. It was taken from the files of the Ellsworth Reporter on February 11, 1915. They were the children of Col. and Mrs. P. S. Harper. The oldest twins were born in 1903, Alice and Albert, both had black eyes; the next set were born in 1910, May and Maynard, they had blue eyes, the youngest set were born in 1913, Ruth and Raymond, one had black eyes and one had blue eyes. Mrs. Harper's eyes are black and Colonel's blue. There had been no twins in the family for two generations back. Their pictures appeared in the paper - beautiful children.
LaCrosse High School sophomore, Addie Kershner, won the VFW Voice of America Democracy Essay placing 2nd in the district.
Cindy Babcock, Aston Ottley, Lynnette Doornbos, Katelyn, Taylor and John attended the WSU Missouri State basketball game in Wichita Thursday evening. After the game Ron Bakers mom, Ranae Baker took them all down to the locker room for pictures and autographs.
National Geographic Society recognized Kassie Pechanec as the LMS champion of the 2016 National Geographic bee. Congrats Kassie.
Colby High School won the 4 A Regional Wrestling Tournament title sending ten of the fourteen wrestlers to the 4 A State Tournament held in Salina. Tanner Elias, senior at Colby placed second in his weight class. Four A Schools participating were McPherson, Abilene, Chapman, Buhler, Clay Center, Concordia, Goodland, Hays, Nickerson, Rock Creek, Smokey Valley, Topeka Hayden, and Wamego. Cheering on Tanner and his team were Travis, Tina, and Katie Elias, Dave and Carolyn Davenport.

MHS opened the football season with a new league affiliation as a member of the Lincoln Branch League with Lucas, Gorham, Dorrance, Bogue, Eastern Heights, Luray and Tipton. Dan Conner is attending Pratt Junior College; Randy Taylor, Roger Legleiter, Dave Derr and Cheryl Davis are enrolled at Dodge City Juco. Jeane Heiser is opening a café and Dairy Bar at the intersection of Hiways 4 & 183 in LaCrosse. Terry Herdman has been selected as an Outstanding Young Man of America. Officers of Stuco; Fritz Foster, Tim Rues, Marsha Healy and Glen Ryan, accompanied by teacher Terry Seltman, attended the Student Council Regional Conference in Lyons on Thursday. Ochs Inc. of Otis will hold their open house at their new facility October 6. Kindergarten class members: Debra Gaunt, Trenton Herdman, Kaira Miller, Penny Schuckman, Tracy Zinn, Melissa Seltmann, Lance McCormick, Frances Million and Tricia Seltman. First and Second graders: Kris Bromlow, Laura North, Scotty Wittman, Karen and Kelly Skillett, Michele Moran, Kevin Rixon, Dale West, Susan Thompson, Greta Dome, Edward Mangold, Chris Casey, Tresha Zinn, Terry Showalter, Sean Miller, Dixie Bott, Jeff Hansen, Dean Million, Donna Durfee and John Moran. Frank Foster, 20 year old music major at Ft. Hays, won first place in the Pick-a-Thon contest at Hays Music. He lasted 87 hours and won a Gibson guitar worth $330.00. Kent Bible has been awarded a scholarship at KSU where he is majoring in math education. Ninth ranked MHS Mustangs downed Dorrance 30-14 on Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Lee Depperschmidt have moved to LaCrosse having served with the Marines for 20 years. They have two children, Janice and Paul. The new building for the Bazine State Bank is complete and will open Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bott will have the grand opening of their Hi-Way Café on Friday. MHS ended their football season with a loss to Luray 33-14. Allen Kober was the leading rusher. All league football honors went to Greg Hinman, Jim Casey and Jerry Higgins. Bill Greenway was selected as center on the offensive team. Lorrie Morgan and LeAnne Morgan Russell are playing volleyball for Sterling College which is in contention for State championship. Eight man All State football team offense was Jim Casey, honorable mention Jerry Higgins; All State football 1st team defense, Greg Hinman. Golden Belt Telephone has new offices under construction in Rush Center. A court of Honor for Troop 489 was held at the McCracken Methodist Church with Glen Ryan and Robin Schuckman receiving their Eagle Scout Awards. Roger Legleiter is a member of the Livestock Judging team in Dodge City.
