In the February 13, 2013 Salina Journal there was a valentine story written by David Norlin, of Salina. He related a story of a pretty Methodist minister's daughter back in the 1960's who was in his class. Mrs. Conner was the teacher of their fifth grade class. He was smittened with the classmate and picked a flower behind Reinharts house and brought it to the classroom and laid it on the girl's desk. Immediately he realized that he had done the wrong thing. She turned red and everyone laughed. The minister moved on and he didn't see this young lady again until his freshman year at Kansas Wesleyan, but now she was with a handsome, older airman who she soon married. David's account is much more descriptive so the above is the jist of the story. Our thanks to Shirley Harp and Lynnette Doornhos for bringing this to our attention.
Visitors to McCracken on Saturday were Roland Bales and his sons, Andrew and David, of Kansas City. Roland's grandparents, Morris Luther Bales and Cora Dearing Bales were residents of rural McCracken from 1902 to 1910. Three of their children were born here. Their names are Maymie Louise, Annis Lorraine and Verill Dearing Bales. Ronald is the son of Verill. They visited the McCracken Public Library, Jail/Museum, McCracken City Cemetery and sites in Ness County where the Bales' lived. Our thanks to Assistant Librarian, Kenneth Foster for his help at the library. These men were appreciative of our resources. We encouraged them to come to the rodeo in July.
