Chuck and Pat Hardie, Alexandria, Minnesota, were overnight guests of Arlyn and Jan North on Monday.  Arlyn and Chuck went through basic training together at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and met up again to serve in Germany with the girls joining them there.  In the summer of 1967, they spent almost a month “tent-touring” Europe.  Monday evening was a trip down memory Lane.
 
Did anyone notice Chuck going to LaCrosse Tuesday afternoon?  He had a little baby calf riding ‘shotgun’ with him instead of Vic’s ’rambunctious’ black Lab!! 
 
A memorial has been given to the McCracken Public Library in memory of Albert North, Mac and Helen Showalter from Jess ‘Sonny’ and Jolene North Showalter.
 
Ron Prince, Kansas State football coach, was in attendance at the Hoisington – Nickerson basketball in Hoisington Friday evening.
 
Tuesday evening Arlyn and Jan North and Frank and Elaine Littler celebrated with Icis Eisenhour on her 88th birthday.  Frank grilled Icis a “long-awaited, mouth-watering” steak.
 
Lonnie Irvin and Cameron attended the KU game in Lawrence Saturday evening.
 
Priscilla Rixon was a Saturday – Tuesday guest of Neal and Amy Jacobs, Tessa and Jaden in Wichita last weekend.    She attended Tessa’s basketball game which they lost in the last second by 2 points.
 
Mel and Virgie Renner, Kansas City, were here to visit her sister, Icis Eisenhour on Thursday and Friday.
 
A memorial was given to the McCracken Alumni in memory of Willis Redding from Jametta Basgall.
 
Last Thursday evening dinner guests of Arlyn and Jan North were Eunice North, Jess and Jolene Showalter, Daryl and Linda North, Ted and Shawna North and boys.  They enjoyed the fish Arlyn caught in Alaska this past summer.
 
A memorial was given to the McCracken Library in memory of Earl Turner from Lorraine Ryan.
 
Eunice North was honored with a couple of family parties for her birthday.  Sunday evening home-made ice cream was enjoyed by Eunice, Arlyn & Jan North, Daryl & Linda North, Jess & Jolene Showalter and Janice Basgall.  Monday evening Eunice was taken out to dinner by Jess & Jolene Showalater, Daryl & Linda North, Daniel & Janice Basgall.
 
Icis Eisenhour & Eunice North were honored guests at a birthday party given by their Sunday School Class from Hays - North Oak Community Church.  Other guests included Bud & Dorothy Hoffman, Bud & Irene Rodman, Norma Strobel, Joe & Edie Copland, Carol Frye, Eileen Jensen, Leona Winterlin, Rachel & Ken Ediger, Roger & Toni Lohrmeyer, Jolene Showalter, Janice & Danae Basgall & Jan North.

Shannon Keith won 2nd in the 3rd and 4th grade division of the Poster contest at the Ellsworth Conservation Meeting on Monday, January 29.  She received a certificate, a tee-shirt and five Sacajawea dollars.  Albert Oller, Ellsworth County Commission, was in attendance.  Virgil Beougher received the District Cooperator Award.  He was a roommate of the late Floyd Thompson at Fort Hays.  Bill Weber, a friend of Francis and Julia Zeller, also attended.  He was the elementary school music teacher at Ellsworth for 30 years and was a square dancer.
 
Velma (Whipple) Wancura of Dighton celebrated her 100th birthday on February 3 at Dighton.  She is the daughter of Henry Whipple and Martha Jane Neal.  She is the second centurian in the Neal ancestry.  Hester Alice (Neal) Yawger lived to be 106.  Hester was the daughter of John Neal and Martha Jane Ryan.  They share common Neal grandparents, Daniel Neal, Jr. and Virginia Jane Holt.  Daniel and Virginia were Hester Alice’s great-great grandparents and they were Velma’s great, great, great grandparents.  Thanks to Dean Birdsong for this information.
 
It was nice to see Gloria Blackwell, Pat David (mother of Paula North), Pat Flax, Nicole Stieben, Keri Boley, Susan Keith and John Goddard at the high school Regional Piano Contest at Fort Hays State University on Saturday. Adam Nielsen, a student from Denmark who attends Ellsworth High School and lives with the John Goddard family, was a participant.  He received a 1 rating.  Following the event the Ellsworth contingent gathered at Thirsty’s for lunch.
 
A memorial was given to the Jail/Museum in memory of Willis Redding from Sherry Suppes of LaCrosse.
 
 Alice Potter, 85, died January 31, 2007 in Omaha, Neb.  She was the daughter of Michael Thomas and Mary Sweeney Moran.  She was born December 12, 1921 in Nekoma.  She married William Robert Potter in McCracken on October 16, 1949.  He died December 6, 1990. Burial was in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, McCracken.  Survivors include sons, Michael, Tim and William; four daughters, Mary Stoltzman, Annie Gimpel, Peggy Renz and Sara Beinlich, seven grandchildren. Her sister Loretta and brother Martin pre-deceased her.

February 1937
Nellie Plotner, 48, daughter of Kit Plotner, died at their farm home Saturday night.
 
The first duster of the year hit McCracken on Sunday.  The soil in this community was not blowing but dust from other parents of the country made visibility limited and car lights were needed for driving.  This dust storm originated near Guymon, Oklahoma.
 
Born to Mr. and Mrs. James Rixon, February 11, 1937 a nine pound girl.  This is the fourth child in the family.
 
February 1947
Claude Elias and Fred Foster of McCracken, strongly contesting any claim of the Brown brothers, Vincent and Leonard, of Ellis and Gay Tillotson of Hays to being the best coyote hunters or having the best coyote dogs in this area, have offered to back up their claims with a $100 contest.  The two McCracken men are claiming they have the fastest catch dogs in Rush and Ellis counties and reported they have already caught 50 coyotes this season.  “We would like to match a race with one of our dogs with Tillotson’s dog ‘Red’ or with the Brown brothers’ dog ‘Bill’ or both on the 16th, 17th, or  18th’ of this month”, declared Elias.
 
Schoenchen High School defeated LaCrosse 26-24 in the REN Tournament at Otis.  Players for LaCrosse were Denison, Pokorny, Sell, Sell and Yost.  For Schoenchen, Dome, Leiker, Kisner, Roth and Urban.
 
February 1957
The 1957 Hutchinson Juco basketball tam was coached by Charles Sesher.  Bill Lovitt, McCracken was a starter for the Blue Dragons.  In a home game against El Dorado, Hutch won the game 94-64 with Lovitt scoring 19 points.  The team as a whole averaged 58% holding El Dorado to 36%.
 
February 1967
Boy Scouts of America will celebrate their 59th anniversary this week.  Members of Troop 489 are Kent Bible, Danny Mills, Greg Buster, Lonnie Irvin, Vic Parsons, Mike Legleiter, David Rogers, Keith Higgins, Floyd Norlin and Robert Mason.  Scout Masters are Carl Bible and Werner Wendler.
 
Officers elected by Athena Club are Philena Baus, Lola Rixon, Irene Gumm and Wilma Washaliski.
 
February 1977
Banker Awards were presented at the soil conservation meeting Saturday night.  Those receiving awards were Mr. and Mrs. Paul Moran, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Bromlow and Valley View Farms. Accepting for Valley View Farms were Mr. and Mrs. Thayne Jones, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Jones and Mr. and Mrs. Orvin Jones.
 
The Mustangs defeated Gorham 86-52 on Friday.  Jerry Casey scored 20, Kellye Irvin and Mike Conner had 18 each.  In the girl’s game Kim McCormick scored 27 to post a 58-15 victory.
 
February 1987
Rhonda Conrad, Wichita, spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Roy Conrad.  Sunday, Rhonda and Mrs. Margaret Gerritzen were dinner guests of the Conrad’s at Alloway’s in Ellis in honor of their birthdays.
 
Weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Taylor were Mr. and Mrs. Larry Bussinger, Kansas City; Sandra Taylor, Greeley, Colo.; and Fred Taylor Jr., Caldwell, Kan.

Signe Barnes left Sunday for Topeka to attend the State Farm Bureau Women’s Committee meeting.
 
Congratulations to John and Ellen Moran on the birth of a son, Joshua Patrick, on Saturday, February 1 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend.
 
Aaron McGaughey’s goat had quads, unfortunately one died.
