A document that would have made Kansas a slave state will have a brief homecoming at the site where it was written in 1857. Slavery supporters wrote it 150 years ago and it will be on display at Constitution Hall in Lecompton on February 10-11. Trim Rues states Its almost unbelievable that the wood-frame building from where it was written is still there and the document still exists. The document is eight-pages and written on high-quality paper made from cotton ragwood. The proposal was ultimately rejected and Kansas became a free state in 1861. The Lecompton Constitution is kept in a climate-controlled storage at the Kansas State Historical Society on a permanent basis.
