John and Janice Stull went to Kansas City the 10th & 11th where they enjoyed a late Xmas with Craig, Julie, Matthew & Katelyn Stull.  They then motor to Columbia, Missouri where they had Christmas with their granddaughter, Jessica Stull, who attended Missouri University.  Janice says, WHEW!!
 
Maddie Rues placed 1st in her spelling group at her school in Topeka.  She is a 5th grader.  When ask who was responsible for this ‘honor’ her mother and dad pointed to each other.  Congrats to Maddie.
 
Those who attended the Encore series “Hobit” last Friday at Beech-Schmidt in Hays were Mike and Rita Felder, Sarah Urban, John and Melanie Zeller, Kelsee Rogers, John and Sharon Irvin, Judy and Al Hugh, Zelda Brack, Lucy Herrman, Shirley Higgins, Lorraine Ryan, Susan Davis, Norma McNair, Galen Allen and Carolyn Thompson.
 
Alicia Rues is serving on the board of directors for Jayhawk Area Agency on aging.
 
Many Rush Countians attended the musical comedy “Church Basement Ladies” at Beech-Schmidt on Sunday afternoon.
 
The Methodist youth served delicious soup after their services at the Methodist Church in LaCrosse on Sunday.
 
The Nekoma State employees enjoyed their late Christmas party at Boondocks in McCracken Sunday evening.
 
Congratulations to Shirley Brackney Gabel on her retirement from Ness County hospital where she served for 43 years.  Her latest job was Purchasing Manager.  Shirley hopes to travel and spend time with her children.
 
On February 7 the talk at Constitution Hall in Lecompton will be on
“Asa Reynard, My Family’s Original Jayhawk: by Timothy R. Graham, chief of staff, Kansas Senate Democratic Leader.  The Bleeding Kansas 2010 programs are held each Sunday at 2:00 p.m.  The admission is free.
 
Our sympathy to the family of Lucille Lamer, 89, who died in Lawrence on January 24, 2010.  Lucille was an extraordinary lady who raised three families.  She and Bus had three children, Chuck, Fay and Kay and she raised her nieces and nephews, John Elmore, Kim Elmore Brockman, Norma Elmore Kober and Patty Muller Taylor.   There will be an inurnment ceremony at McCracken City Cemetery at a later date.  She will be buried by her husband C. W. (Bus) Lamer 11.
 
 We welcome William J. Greenway, son of Bill and Paula Greenway, to Midland Marketing.  He is the third generation to work at the facility.  His grandparents, Don and Betty Greenway ran the elevator prior to his father, Bill, joining the firm.
 
Marty and Tina Mills celebrated his birthday with supper at the Boondocks last Friday evening.  Addie brought him a birthday cake after she got off work on Saturday.
 
It was nice to see Father Ultan Murphy, Olmitz and Father Ben Martin, Marienthal, who concelebrated mass with Father Rene Labrador at Jim’s funeral.
 
Andy Hansen was a Monday morning visitor of Addie Mills.  Cassie Karlin had sent Kona Coffee from Hawaii for Addie and Andy.   Andy stopped by to pick up his share.
 
Chester Rogers, 84, died January 28, 2010 at LaCrosse.  He was he son of O. S. “Pete” and Alice Moore Rogers and was born October 8, 1925.  He married Joyce Wilhelm on November 17, 1946.  She survives as well as son, Les and wife Sheryl; daughters, Debra Ann and Robert Smith and Roxie and Ron Dechant; brother, Walter and wife Janie and sister, Velma and husband Carl Legleiter; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.  Burial was in McCracken City Cemetery.  He was a farmer/rancher.  He had a quick wit, loved to tell stories of his early life and was a special friend. Chet was a member of the Isis Shrine serving as President of the Fort Hays Shrine Club.
 
Vic Parsons called.  He mentioned that when Jim Schafer came to McCracken he operated the barber shop in Parsons Drug Store.
 
Memorials have been received in memory of Lucille Lamer and Jim Schafer to the Jail/Museum from Francis and Julia Zeller.

February 1890
We learned that a depot will be built at Hargrave in the near future.
 
J. F. Edwards has hung out his shingle for the practice of law in McCracken.
 
Silas Roller has ordered 3,000 locust trees for his tree claim.  This claim gives the name “Locust Grove” to our school house.
 
February 1910
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Elias Tuesday morning a nice 7 pound girl.
 
August Schutte was in town Saturday.  He said the real estate firm of Schutte and Shiney sold over $900,000 worth of land during the year 1909 and expect to do a great deal better this year.
 
Green and Herbert Davenport were here a day or so the latter part of last week.  They had been to Kansas City where they had delivered eleven loads of good steers which they shipped from Buena Vista, Colorado.
 
February 1920
The new city marshal James Wilson has about thirty families in quarantine (due to influenza)
 
Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Thompson died Saturday night and Sunday morning at their home west of town of influenza.
 
Mary Gladys James, 13 years of age, died Friday, February 6, of influenza.
 
Michael Schmidt died at the home of his parents, Monday, of influenza.  He was buried in the German Lutheran cemetery southeast of town.
 
February 1940
Because of the extremely cold weather and scarcity of feed, a large mount of feed has been shipped into McCracken this past month.  Gerald and Forrest Anderson have been hauling feed from around Chase for the past week and a half.
 
Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Ben McCaskey on the birth of a daughter Thursday morning.
 
February 1960
Karen Walker and Larry Clark were married in the Methodist Church at Syracuse Sunday afternoon.
 
Jean’s Café moved Sunday into the Fitzgerald building on the east side of Main Street.
 
February 1980
The 6th and 7th grade boys beat Otis-Bison 35-27 and top scorer was Sean Miller with 8.  They had a win over Sacred Heart of Ness City, 24-14 and high scorer was John Moran with 8.  In the 8th grade game with Otis Bison, the boys won 48-37 with Shawn McKinney scoring 17.
 
Jean Schutte and Twila Higgins hosted a farewell party for Josephine Herdman on Sunday.  Guests were Sharon Bearley, Kim Cooper, Lorraine Norlin, Minnie Jacobs and Betty Casey.
