DeEtte Huffman, 89, McPherson, founder of the Arkansas River Coalition, died January 27, 2012. DeEtte's vision and dedication have been a motivating force within the Arkansas River Coalition. She served as president, executive director and newsletter editor . The purpose of the Coalition is to protect, restore and improve the entire Arkansas watershed and enhance the well-being of all life it sustains. Growing up at the great bend of the Arkansas River, it was important for me (ct) to join DeEtte in her quest. In 2011 members organized and participated in four river cleanups. The first was in conjunction with the city-wide river clean-up prior to Riverfest in Wichita. Other projects are enhancing the banks of the river and planting a garden across from The Keeper of the Plains. Float trips are organized throughout the year by canoe or kayaks. DeEtte traveled the river and took pictures of the changes in the river. Her daughter, Louise Otero and her family, are friends. Susan Keith and Carolyn Thompson attended her services held at St. Anne's Episcopal Church in McPherson on Monday. Burial was a White Chapel Memorial Gardens in Wichita.
