Alicia Rues Barrett, Cathy & John Casey were here this weekend to visit their mother, Arline Rues. They all attended the program given by Deb Goodrich-Bisel at the Community Center.

Our Kansas City friends, Dean, Phil, Jeff, Clinton, Blake, Jerry, Jay, Joe, Roy, Kevin, Keith and Steve from OK City were here this weekend.

CKLS Library in Great Bend has pulled A LOT of books from the shelves of the McCracken Library. Please come in and pick up several and if you would like you may make a donation!!

Jodi Lubbers, history teacher from Fairfield High School, was in attendance Saturday evening for the program given at the McCracken Community Center. She read about the article in the Hutch News. She taught with Chuck Higgins and also knew Kenny Foster from when he taught in Macksville. She knows Tim Rues as she would take her history students to LeCompton when there was money available.

Mrs. Earl Turner attended the school for librarians Monday through Wednesday at Ft. Hays.

The new St. Luke’s Lutheran church at Bazine will be dedicated Sunday.

Reed Bullock, a technician 2nd class on the USS Badger arrived home from New Port, RI after serving 3 years 9 months in the US Navy.

Floyd Thompson, Oscar B. Fear and LeRoy Gilbert will leave for induction in the armed services.

Mrs. Ola Donecker, 57 died after suffering a heart attack at her home. Burial in Hoisington.

William Spomer is a school of medicine student at the University of Kansas.

A potluck supper was held at the home of Grace Colvin honoring Mrs. D.D. Hunt. Those present were Mrs. Bert Irvin, Cynthia Hayes, Elsie Showalter, Kate Derr, May Schutte, Pearl Yawger, Carrie Darkes, Susan Wagner, Stella VanWinkle, Bessie North, Lena Barnett, Rosa Kinnamon, Grace Anderson, Emma Start, Anna Stephens and Mrs. Harry Phillips.

Rev. Woodrow Hill is the new minister of the Assembly of God Church.

The program at Constitution Hall in Lecompton on Sunday, February 3, will be "A Few Words in Figures: Breaking John Brown Jr.'s Civil War Cipher" by Bill Hoyt, historian and author, Pittsburg State University. All are welcome. There is a suggested donation of $3.00 for adults.

Our sympathy to the family of Robert Arthur Oppel, 82, who died January 14, 2013 at his home. He was born in Kingfisher, Oklahoma to Fritz "Fred" Oppel and Marie Kunneman Oppel on December 12, 1930. He graduated from Omega High School in 1948, and attended Oklahoma State A & M College in Stillwater, Oklahoma where he received a Masters in Agronomy. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War at Fort Benning, Georgia, and was honorably discharged with the rank of First Lieutenant. He married Hazel Pfaff on December 28, 1968, in Bazine, Kanas. They had three children, Matthew, Miriam and Mark. He was a lifelong member of the Kingfisher Emmanual Lutheran Church and served as Elder and held every office during various times. He was an officer of the Kingfisher County Wheat Growers, and a member of the Kingfisher County Cattlemen's, VFW and Farmhouse Fraternity. He is survived by his wife, Hazel Oppel; son, Matthew R. Oppel, Esq of Kingfisher and his wife, Karla, daughter, Miriam Oppel Loewen, PharmD and her husband Travis of Bettendorf, Iowa; son Major Mark J. Oppel, Judge Advocate and his wife Sarah, of Charlottesville, Virginia and five grandsons, Karson, Konner, Killian, Zachary and Luke; two brothers, Henry and Fred, Jr. The funeral services were conducted by Deacon Orval Peters. His wife, Hazel is the third child of fourteen of John and Silvania Pfaff. Our thanks to Lucille Pfaff Young for sending this obiturary of her brother-in-law.

Mark your calendars for March 5, 2013 at 1:00 P.M. at the Coummunity Building when the Postal service will answer questions regarding the reduction of hours for the McCracken Post Office.

The McCracken Jail/Museum has received a check for $261.83 from the United Fund of Rush County. Our sincere thanks to the people of Rush County for their contributions and the United Fund for including our museum in the annual appeal. The funds will be used for acquisitions.

Charles and Shari Pollard, Monrovia, California have renewed their membership in the Jail/Museum.
Deb Goodrich Bisel, master story-teller, gave a delightful talk at the City Building on Saturday night. On Sunday morning she and her husband Gary, Rose Diehl and Shirley Higgins visited Hampton. Deb enjoyed McCracken so much she plans to return for research in February. Other programs are planned by McCracken Public Library. So many came from out of town, their presence was much appreciative.
