Tom and Brenda Prosser attended the Kansas Fairs and Festivals Convention in Topeka this past weekend. We saw a lot of great entertainment and had a nice weekend away from home!
Megan Townsend, a Saline High School, Saline, Michigan graduate and current Wellesley College junior was one of 40 women at the highly regarded Boston womens college named an Albright Fellow in the institutes inaugural year. Townsend received word of the honor while working for a global public health program in Costa Rica. The aspiring physician, who hopes to someday work in public health for those in need in developing countries, said she is honored to have the opportunity. Over the next three weeks, Townsend will hear lectures from other women she strongly admires, including Albright, a Wellesley alumnus, former secretary of state and former representative to the United Nations. The first two weeks of the program will have Townsend in a group with several other students researching and developing suggestions for one of the United Nations' Millennium Goals. This summer the Albright Institute will fund a six-week internship abroad in which Townsend will apply her skills. She applied to Cape Verde, India and Central America for the internship. Next fall she will make another presentation to the Albright Institute about her experiences abroad.
Congratulations to Jacob Townsend, who has qualified to go to the state DECA meet held in Dearborn, Michigan, March 12-14. DECA is an international, professional association of Marketing Students. It is a co-curricular, student-centered educational organization, which reinforces skills taught in the marketing classroom. It features impromptu role plays of challenging business case problems with volunteer business professionals serving as judges. He was in the top three of the quick service marketing events at districts. During the actual contest he was given a business situation and had to role play how he would manage the situation.
Megan and Jacob are the daughter and son of Dan & Kim McCormick Townsend.
Robert (Bob) Dickerson, Turon, died January 8. I got acquainted with Bob when Chuck was a teacher in Turon and Bob was the postmaster. He was interested in history and very interested in trains and depots. He shared some depot pictures with me, Brownell and McCracken. He came to McCracken when I was on the library board, gave a talk and showed his many pictures of trains and depots. My sympathy to his family.
Zach Higgins started his first basketball game Tuesday evening, January 12 since smashing his left wrist in Hoisingtons first football game back in September.
Nik Slemp, the son of Jim and Carolyn Slemp, won the Sullivan Village
4-5th grades Spelling Bee and will go on to the City-Wide Schools sometime
in the near future. His brother Chris got the highest amount of AR (reading) points of any 3rd grader. Chris has also been moved up to the bigger kids basketball
team as the coach likes his basketball handling skills. Nik and Chris are grandsons of Ray and Marilyn Slemp and live in Lawton Oklahoma. Their dad, Jim, is now serving in Iraq.
The McCracken rodeo received $500.00 from the Rush County Economic Development Committee! The rodeo also gave a $35.00 Memorial to the Josh Stieben Scholarship Fund. To those of you who didnt know him Josh worked at the West End of the rodeo grounds and was a very fun, likeable young man who loved being a cowboy. Josh was killed in an auto accident on December 26.
Jenna Higgins, a middle school student at HMS7, scored 17 points in a 32 29 win over Newton Middle School last Thursday in Newton.

Sylvester and Jeanette McCormick for letting us use the yard Christmas Candles. It looked simply beautiful, Hated to take it down.
Those attending the rodeo meeting Sunday evening were Roger and Brenda Legleiter, Jerilyn Stull, Colleen Kerns, Gary Barnes, Mark Brackney, Ava North, Bill Greenway, Barbara Rupp and her daughter Kara Hackney, Miss Teen Kansas.
This last Saturday Mommy (Ava) and Abigail North attended a Mother Daughter Tea Birthday party in Ellis, lots of fun and dressing up! Later that evening we babysat for the Nokes girls from Albert, Lea 2 and her little sister Ella 2months! Lots of fun with five little girls in the house, but poor Travis is still out numbered!!!
On January 12 Travis and Ava North celebrated 9 wonderful years of marriage and on January 26th their daughter Breonna North is celebrating her 9th Birthday! (We missed Travis and Avas anniversary. Congratulations)
Our sympathy to the family of Dean McFarren, 83, who died January 11, 2010 in Wichita. He was the son of Jesse and Beryl (Grumbein) McFarren and was born August 19, 1926 in rural McCracken. He married Darlene Edwards on April 29, 1952 in Phillipsburg. He is survived by a son, Danny and daughter Diane, a brother, Gene and a sister, Yvonne Grothusen, three grandchildren, Jason Showalter, Amanda Showalter and Michael McFarren; and six great-grandchildren, Havyn, Shaili, Taybree, Rianne, Kyson and Terren Showalter. His son, Steven, pre-deceased him in 1990. Services were held at McCracken United Methodist Church.
Bob Smith, husband of Debbie Rogers Smith, has been transferred to the Norton Hospital for rehab. They took out the scar tissue around his artificial hip joint at Hays Medical Center.
Constitution Hall State Historic Site in Lecompton will be having their series Bleeding Kansas 2010 at 2:00 p.m. on Sundays. The admission is free and all our welcome to attend. Tim Rues, curator, is in charge. Programs will be held on January 31, February 7, 14, 21 and 28. We will have each program in the paper prior to the event.
It was good to see Alton and LaVern Huddleston and Marie Brack on Thursday at Ness City at the Diabetic Clinic.
Our sympathy to the family of Maurine Fritzler, Ness City, who died January 13, 2010. She is survived by her sons, Max and Mike. Her son Mark pre-deceased her. Her services were held at Fitzgerald Funeral Home in Ness City with burial in the Ness City cemetery. Many friends from Alexander, LaCrosse, Brownell, Bazine and McCracken were in attendance.

Thomas Ryan of Brownell met with a rather bad accident Sunday morning. He used a small quantity of what he thought to be coal oil to start a fire, but it proved to be gasoline, which exploded, throwing the burning liquid over him. He was pretty well burned over the body, his hand suffering the worst.

LeeRoy Schuckman began Monday as the 7th and 8th grade teacher in the McCracken grade school. Mr. and Mrs. Schuckman moved into James Wiermans new house which he completed recently.
January 1980
Norma Elmore was crowned queen and Mitchell Jacobs King at the basketball homecoming Friday night. Attendants were Kellye Irvin, Tammy Higgins, Craig Stull and Kathleen Moran. Flower bearer was Mamie Rogers and crown bearer was Lannie Morgan.
Lucille Lamer was elected Regent of the DAR on Wednesay. Charlotte Fluharty is vice-regent, Drewie McGaughey, treasurer and Joey Black, chaplain.
