I read with interest Lindas article last week about children and crazy adults staying safe, among other pieces of advice. Does anyone remember the times we would go to Brick Hill with car hoods and pieces of tin as sleds? Very seldom were we lucky enough to have a sled. The bottom of hill usually had a little stream of water or depending on the temperature, ice. What fun!
Jerry Waldschmidt and Marilyn Dalton spent the weekend in McCracken. They enjoyed their meals at Boondocks, Marilyn especially loved the coconut meringue pie!
Albert and Doris Oller and Gary Sam Oller, Hollyrood, joined Babe and Arlene Gilbert in Boondocks Sunday noon for dinner.

Square dance friends of Francis and Julia Zeller, Tom and Dalene Peters, formerly of Stockton, now of Tucson, called them. They said that they live a block from the church where Christina Taylor Greens funeral was held. The church holds 1,800 and there were 1,000 out side.

David Dennis, Wichita, was selected as chairman of the State Board of Education on Wednesday. Carolyn Wims-Campbell is vice chairperson. The chairman will lead the monthly board meetings and work with Education Commissioner Diane DeBacker to set the agenda. The commissioner will also represent the board in various functions and meeting across the state. The position is for two years.
In addition to McCracken History Notes, we will be featuring items about McCracken Rodeo in anticipation of the 25th annual rodeo to be held July 7, 8 and 9, 2011.
July 1986: A precursor of the rodeo was the Third After Harvest Festival, kid sheep and steer riding and team penning at the arena. A softball tournament was held with the KAYS TV Bloopers. Bed race winners were Jim Cole, Doug Elias, Neal Jacobs, Bob Archer and Amy Windholz. Mud tug of war participants were Neal Jacobs, Freddie Taylor, Lance McCormick Doug Elias, Jim Cole, Doug Higgins, Lon Kraft, Kim Brackney, Amy Windlolz, Kim Serpan, Mitchell Jacobs, Rob McGaughey, Richard Showalter, Layne Morgan, Bob Archer and Dennis Elias. The day concluded with a barbecue supper and street dance with music by the Foster Brothers.

Alfalfa Jones is Arthur Names latest play. It was an agricultural play and Art played the part of a farmer. It was held at the Opera House to the largest crowd ever in attendance.
January 1941
A newcomer to the first and second grade room is Paul Morris. Paul came from Manila where he went to a Bordner school.
August and Rachel Schutte were busy youngsters last week running the K-T Oil station while the proprietor, August Schutte was ill with flu.
The year 1940 makes the tenth consecutive year in which the precipitation has been below normal.

A $1,500.00 check, representing profits from the Rush County History Book, was donated to Barnard Library to help defray the cost of purchasing the microfilm of all the papers published in Rush County from 1874 to the present date.
